I have the Mk ll and love, love, love it. I took a trip to Istanbul and took just two lenses: the 12-40/f2.8 and pany 20/f1.7. Everything fit in a small messenger bag. IMHO, and purely from a photography point of view (excluding video), Olympus had the formula nailed with the E-M10 mk II, and subsequent models have since been somewhat compromised. While a 20 Mpix sensor is certainly appealing, it also produces larger files for a limited quality increase. And it doesn't offset the disappearance of a lot of customisation possibilities that are embedded in the mk II and sorely lacking on newer models. I'm glad some of the most egregious omissions (such as silent shutter in all PASM modes) have finally been backported from the mk II to the mk IV, but there are a lot more areas where the mk II still has the edge. A beginner will certainly be more at ease to transition to real photography with a mk IV. But the more advanced photographers are still better served with the straightforwardness of the mk II. Went with the E-M10 iv after shooting with the original E-M5 for a decade. While I would have preferred the E-M5 iii, or its updated OM-5 reskin, instead I got the M10 used for 1/4th the price of the M5. I really wanted to love the new OM-5, but it just seems like last-decade technology; no USB-C, no new sensor, and a less than compelling compute/social/ai enhancements. I do have a GH5S for video, and it's been a blessing the last few years, all the while my OMD has just gathered dust. Olympus has never made much effort with the video side of things, and being locked indoors the last few years, I didn't use it as I just didn't need a travel camera. I have some big travel plans this summer though, and despite my smartphone being a pretty great primary stills-camera, nothing can yet replace my 75mm Olympus lens. I probably would have jumped on an older E-M5 ii if I could have snagged one for $200 or so, to get focus peaking and a slightly better sensor, but an M10-iv for a bit more seemed worth it. My ancient E-M5 is hard to use with manual primes, and there is very little data to work with when post-processing, but otherwise it's a beautiful little stills camera. OM Systems needs to excite me, while keeping well away from competing in the price range that Sony FF cameras are in. $500 to $1500 is the price range I'm hoping for. Auto-focus needs to be at least as good as a Sony A6100 camera, ideally even better. Clean HDMI output (mini or full sized port), line/mic in audio, NDI output, USB-C webcam output, USB-rapid charging, NFC connectivity, digital e-stab + IBIS, and a more seamless mobile experience integration. Perhaps even slap Android OS in, using a Qualcomm snapdragon chipset to power the device; how cool would it be if the camera was picked up as the primary system camera so it is compatible with all Android apps? I'd smack on my fish-eye pancake lens and pocket such a camera, or switch to a 25mm to do a live stream from my home studio. If done flawlessly, perhaps in partnership with Samsung, I'd drop even upwards of $2000 for such a beast.

I love the Mark III, I said it in my last EM10 III video earlier this year, also, like you said it's a bargain now. In fact, Olympus is still selling Mark II which is even cheaper. Olympus didn't push me to say anything, I only say it objectively in this case, I actually didn't like a couple of things in this camera, only because they don't apply to me, spec is updated and if you use it, then the latest is better, but for most photographers, either can do a great job.

I am buying a mirrorless camera for the very first time so am watching a lot of review videos on KZbin and this was one of the best! Down to the E-M10 Mark IV vs the Fujifilm X-T200 as my final options as they are the same price locally. Fuji has the larger sensor and I guess brand future "stability" but Olympus has IBIS and overall better feel/ease of use. Mainly for casual shooting on vacations/trips. Anyone know if there are any other major considerations I am not taking into account?
@Red35Photography4 жыл бұрын
System size as an overall package. Body is one think. Most buy Olympus because of IBIS and size, their lenses are easily much smaller than even Fuji (like for like). So when you grow and start to get a couple of things, you will soon realise the added weight and size. So, if you are shooting vacations and trips, Olympus is a much better choice in my opinion, not selling it of course :)

@@Red35Photography Hello Jimmy! There's some news there. I made my first comment on a Saturday after a frustrating attempt at ordering a new EM10 Mk IV on line. My usual camera shop is a place called Henry's. There's a chain of them here in Canada. At first I tried their website. It wasn't encouraging. It was listed as a "Special Order" item, and only home delivery was indicated. So I tried another shop here in Ottawa, Vistek. On their site it was also by order only, but at least they offered a choice of delivery or in store pick up. So I went through the process of ordering from them. But at the end my charge card was declined. (I'd just payed it off, but I guess it hadn't gone through yet.) So now what? The next day was Sunday. Vistek was closed, but Henry's was open. So I decided to drop in, in person. Success! They said that in store pick up was fine, and normal. The website was wrong. So....I bought one! 4 to 6 weeks possibly before I see it, but hopefully worth the wait.

Hi! I started learning photography with a second-hand EM10 II and still enjoy using it. I wonder why you (and many other) tell about the "new" heart/processor in mark IV. It's not new by any means. EM10 III already had Truepic VIII and the newest processor now is Truepic IX presented in EM1 III.
@Red35Photography4 жыл бұрын
Despite no proper info, but this version of Trupic VIII should be a new tweaked version hence the better power management and overall snappier performance. A 10% save in energy is significant, it may not reflect in outright speed. It's not new, just like a lot of computer processors. So far, only EM1 III has Trupic IX

Thanks, it is a nice camera but with a number of compromises. I was wondering, physically, how close in overall size is the E-M10 IV to the 5 III? Is the 10 much smaller? Also, how does the 10 IV compare with the 5 II? Price wise maybe that is a good option?
@Red35Photography4 жыл бұрын
Interesting thought, I may make a video about it. But in short, the EM10 is narrower than EM5III, similar thickness and height. In terms of comparing to EM5 II, well, EM10 IV is a better camera in almost every way, just without customisations and weather seal. So shoot manual, then the EM10 IV can beat the EM5 II easy especially the new AF couple with the processor, it's a much more enjoyable machine to shoot with. It's a hard decision really, but for 2020, I may finally lean over the new EM10 over the older EM5 II now.

@Red35Photography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching mate. 12-100 is a heavy lens so it will only balance well with bigger camera, but it didn't stop me from taking it to my trip as an all-in-one lens since it's got the reach and OIS on the lens. You won't have a problem using 12-40 on the mark IV at all. Mind you, the Mark IV grip isn't as deep as the EM1 and it's a lot more compact, it's nice but in terms of comfort, EM1 is still a better choice for people who use the camera for extended time, professionals and people with larger hands.

Better is a subjective word, depends on how you use your camera, EM10 is a smaller and much lighter camera than D5600. The system as a whole is also much smaller. Image quality, I would say about the same but sharper due to the fact that OM-D cameras don't have AA filters. Also a lot quieter and that image stabilisation is just cool. I am firmly stuck at the EM10 II as the EM10 III was a panic strip out of functionality in Olympus's dying moments and little has come back in the IV. The problem with these cheap cameras is there are no firmware improvements and the IV is something that could have been done in firmware over the III. I bought to compliment it a Panasonic G80 with a 12-60 lens which has a ton more extra functionality such as custom modes and cheaper. The EM10 IV seems only really of interest to anyone who has never used a Mk I or II. They would have to bring custom modes back in to make me at all interested.

That solely depends on your budget. For city and nature landscape, you probably want a wide angle lens, but not too wide, as it needs some thinking to shoot. So, I would recommend a general purpose zoom like the 12-45mm f4 PRO, small but very high quality lens. This will be your main lens on the camera. Then add a kit long tele zoom like the 75-300mm will be good for those occasional long shots. These two should serve you well. The first lens is a little bit more expensive but really good quality. Both have similar EVFs in terms of resolution. Panasonic has slightly higher number but negligible in real use with this size. AF is also on par of each other, though the approach is different. I can never get use to Panasonic's DFD system, a little annoying in my eyes. In terms of speed, in normal AF, Panasonic may be just a hair line quicker, but in CAF, Olympus may be better and 'sticks' better with subject. @@Red35Photography Hi Jimmy thanks for such a quick reply....yes I agree it will be softer than normal 4k but my thinking was that I could use it if I'm stuck. If I crop 4k video in post I'll be taking an 8mp view and cutting it down to 2mp (approx). The area of the sensor used if using the 2x digital teleconverter is pressed would be just under 4mp then upscaled by the camera to 4k. I would assume that would be a little sharper? Any thoughts?
@Red35Photography4 жыл бұрын
@@SurferDude001 Correct but it depends on what software you use, some are better at 'digital upscaling' than others, while in camera crop (digital tele) is simply 'chopped' the frame and enlarge, so you may want to do a few tests then determine which way is better.
@SurferDude0014 жыл бұрын
@@Red35Photography Hi Jimmy, I'm in the middle of some pseudo scientific tests on this and will probably post some details when I get time. Suffice to say I've just tested this on an E-M5 iii....for stills shooting (as others have tried before) there's not much between a crop in camera or in photoshop ... but for 4k video there is definitely a benefit using the in camera teleconverter compared to a 2x crop in post of a 4k clip. The theoretical availability is 1.35 times more pixel lines in height and my tests show the teleconverter frame grab giving an increase of around 1.25 times compared to a 2x crop in post. The difference is easy to see.....

I have the MkII, which I chose over the MkIII, because I didn't feel I needed the 4K video, and I far preferred the ergonomics and feel (those metal top and bottom plates, and a nicer grip). However, this MkIV seems to be bringing genuine improvements, and while I wouldn't consider upgrading for at least another year, and would rather spend money on lenses instead, if someone I know was looking to get into the system right now, I'd probably tell them to go looking for the best deal they can get for a MKIV. If its in your price range, it's worth it, and unless you're a pro, why would you need anything more?
@Sjekster4 жыл бұрын
That's kind of the issue with these entry level camera's. Progress seems much slower than with higher end models, so there's usually very little incentive to upgrade from a mark 1 to a 2, 3 or maybe even 4. With the Pen range it's even worse, it feels like the only upgrade they make is to put a different number on it. E-PL8, 9 and 10 are almost the same camera. Most upgrades could've been handled by a simple firmware. I own a E-M10 mark 1 and I love it, but feel absolutely zero need to upgrade to a newer model. I use it as a back up camera. If I ever replace it, it probably will be with a E-M5, but not with another E-M10 I guess.
@AndrewSowerby4 жыл бұрын
@@Sjekster the E-PL series are a bit of a loss leader for Olympus, and I suppose they want users to jump onto the E-M series cameras where there's more profit. They need to differentiate, but I like the way they do it - they don't cripple their lower level cameras. The E-PL cameras are really capable, but I see what you mean, the specs and features have barely changed in the recent models. I still think there have been significant improvements made in the E-M10s though, and there's a fairly big jump from the MkI to the MkIV, although you might not need any of that if it's not your main camera, as you said. When the MkIV becomes a used bargain, I can see myself picking one up.

I am thinking between this and Sony zv e10 But I believe the sony with a small gimbal would be a better choice What do you think? It is mainly for vlogging
@Red35Photography Жыл бұрын
AF is better in Sony, but Olympus is better with stabilisation. Overall set up weight is about the same and depends on what lens you use, but Olympus EM10 is lighter than Sony ZV E10. I guess, if you are using it primarily for vlogging and if you want to use external mics, Sony wins since E-M10 doesn't have any option to put audio in. You can use internal mics like the Sony but again, I think Sony may be slightly better in audio for vlogging purposes. If budget can stretch, I would recommend OM-5 or E-M5 from Olympus, they are much better vlogging camera, you can see my vlog kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIGbnayCrc18qck this is from OM-5

While I think this is a great camera, I find it really sad what Olympus did to the mark III. It has the same processor but probably won’t be getting any of the software upgrades found in the mark IV. Afaik they even released a mark IIIs which is exactly that - a software update shipped as hardware. Other than the sensor, the screen and possibly the usb charging, they could’ve given us an almost equally good camera years ago.

I'm a beginner and will be traveling through the U.S. I'm definitely more interested in taking pictures, not videos. However, I would like to be able to photograph people and things in that are in motion because I like the feel and look that those pictures give. With all this in mind, would you recommend to me the III or IV? Thank you :)
@Red35Photography3 жыл бұрын
Hi Madison, If you like photographing people, the latest Mark IV is better as its dedicated face/eye focus is really good, so you will definitely get better accuracy for that, especially for beginner, nailing focus is easier with it.

Instead of skipping the mark "4" and going to mark "5" (because the Japanese regard the number 4 the same way westerners regard the number 13, IE: unlucky) they used the Roman Numeral IV to get around the superstition. Note that there is no Lumix G4 (but strangely, Nikon did make a D4 and an N4, the D4 suffers from "LCD rot").

Trust me guys, there are a lot of 'dedicated' EM10 users out there, their sole objective is to get the smallest and lightest retro looking and capable camera :D. EM10 fits the bill. Many stuck with Mark II because of a few obvious reasons. Mark III was a big departure in many areas but I am glad that Mark IV get quite a lot back, I guess the only thing lacking is the metal construction, which I don't really mind. Agree with many here, the initial price is a little high but generally everything has gone up, this Covid thing does help either. But over time, street price will come down. But if any one in UK and wants to get any Olympus gear, let me know, I can get some discount. However, it only works in Olympus website, and it may not have the best price. But for any new gear, if you need, then my discount will guarantee you get the cheapest at first.

Is the em10 mk4 best budget? Well probably not. When it came out it was about 650 bucks, u get a gx9 for that, which has a viewfinder that you can tilt and dual IS. The e m10 mk4 has no dual IS because lack of sync IS. Only the expensive Omd's can do that. That's the 2 most simple reasons why the gx9 is a better deal. Both have 20 Megapixel.

Full frame Lmount Olympus required
@Red35Photography4 жыл бұрын
L mount is collapsing and the group are playing blaming game at the moment for poor sales. Hold your horses, I think we all know that you want to be a brand to focus on one thing and be great at it. Panasonic has spreader too thin and so are others. Unless they have unlimited budgets, it's difficult unless you are already in that market segment. Sigma's L mount camera is also a flop so far with virtually no sales. The only camera bodies that sold consitantly is the Leica SL series, which has its own fanfare for over 5 years. Panasonic hasn't sold well with their S series despite being one of the most capable ones yet Canon and Sony have once again put their foot down and continue their quest to become the best FF mirrorless world. Look, if one is unhappy with Olympus because they are not FF, then they should consider other options as we know that they are now continue to focus on MFT under JIP.

Yes, Canon T7 is not bad but definitely not something I would say 'advance' in techs. It hasn't got image stabilisation, nor any computational photography features.
