This is not the Fro Knows Photo channel. If post a trolling comment and it will be deleted. Do you have a question? Would you like to have a positive discussion? You don't have to agree with me, but you will not be permitted to behave like an ass on my channel. I'll weigh in here. Full disclosure: I shoot Olympus. Ok, now that that's out of the way, here are some observations. Many people have been trashing this camera today - both on KZbin and elsewhere. The specs have been leaked for weeks and Olympus themselves have positioned the camera for sports and wildlife shooters and have said so. Now I don't care what anyone shoots...I really don't. I used to get pulled into all the "my gear is better than your gear" arguments back in the day but that's a total waste of time. Any modern camera circa 2019 can take incredible images. Like Sony? Go ahead and shoot Sony. Fuji? Have at it. Olympus? Rock that E-M1x! I agree with Joe here...this camera is not for everyone but it IS an incredible piece of gear. If you don't think so, you can always go back to 1980 and shoot a Nikon F3 with motor drive that weighs 3 times what this camera does with tele lenses that are 3 feet long and weigh 15 pounds. Disclaimer: No disrespect to Nikon in that last statement...just using it as an example as I have shot that combination in my youth.

Thanks for sharing this information Joe. I actually learned a few things here. (as far as features were concerned I mean) - I know you said that you have no insider knowledge, but man I hope they knock it out of the park with the em5 mark 3. I went from 10 mark 2 to 5 mark 2 because i was unimpressed with the em10 mark 3. Some things Id love to see: 1. Bring back the ALL-I compression for video mode. (I think they ditched this in the 10 mark 3) 77mbps for 1080p is awesome. If they can add an ALL-I option for 4k in the mark 3, I am game! The variable bit rate is somewhat of a bummer especially when Panasonic can pump out 400mbps files. 2. Be able to switch focus points with eye up to the EVF. (this is one of things i miss on the 5 mark 2 compared to the 10 mark 2) 3. a more hi res EVF 4. More focus points. (and/or phase detection?) I am confident that they could make the 5 mark 3 a baby em1x minus the battery grip and maybe lose a feature or 2, and still not cannibalize sales. Especially if priced right. Ah well, we will see. Olympus, if you're listening, I beg of you.....haha, anyway - thanks again Joe.

The mechanical shutter speed is not limited by the processing power but by the precision of the shutter built. Silent shutter speeds are the same with the E-M1 Mark II so even here I do not think the dual cpu comes really to an advantage at the shutter speeds.

Sorry if I gave that impression Wudang Academy - the point was tat the processors will allow the focus features to keep up at those frame rates with incredible accuracy.

First youtube comment EVER....I'm invested in the Olympus system...so I'm intrigued, but all the hate and complaints? (I previously had 3 nikons and a gang of lenses) $3,00 isn't cheap, but I, like a lot of M43 shooters who want a "pro" body would sell/trade the EM1ii so there's that. A D5; 1Dx; A9 are all over $5,000 add in pro level glass you're looking at 10,000 USD. The size, it's not huge, grab a pen-f or the EM10 to carry. you don't see photogs carrying a D5 with a 70-200 or do you? I'm kind of all over the place, but take it for what it's worth, if you're invested in the system it's not too big or overpriced and should be a blast to use.

What about the viewfinder? I heard it wasn't the greatest... What's your (objective) view on that?
@theJoeEdelman5 жыл бұрын
Sincerely André Pepin - I disagree. FACT - it is NOT the same viewfinder as in the EM1 - Mark II. FACT - it uses all new technology with higher magnification which is REALLY nice. My belief is that most of the whining online is because of people who don't understand the technology and a few reviewers who felt it should have been OLED. Olympus skipped on OLED for now due to the way OLED displays images vs. an LCD. The speed at which the image is displayed progressively is NOT fast enough to prevent EVF blackout. The Olympus LCD EVF operates at 120fps to make EVF blackout impossible to see with the human eye. OLED would have negatively impacted that and even though OLED LOOKS somewhat better (contrast, brightness, sharpness) it lacks in refresh rate at this size. It would not have been ideal for a camera with this speed.

Spectacular camera! Great features and innovations, but I do not see any of the Leica/Sony users racing to get their hands on it. And as you say almost at the end of the video, the camera fits your needs and perhaps the needs of the current Olympus ambassadors and users. I am using an Em1 mk2 at present and I am very happy with it and so far I have only scratched the surface of its main features, although I wouldn't cut my veins if one day, somewhat, (wink wink...) Olympus will add on the firmware the ND filter... What I mean is that for my usage the camera doesn't satisfy the price tag but I can see how much effort has been put into it.

Certainly a great tool. And a clever move from Olympus. A rugged tool for every kind of rough enviroments, good ergonomics and decent battery life. But, Olympus isn t serving the ultimate video tool. So, Olympus doesen t want to compete with Panasonic in order not to cannibalize their sales. That makes me hope that both brands will continue to improve the M4/3 system. It looks like price will drop very quick. As Olympus didn t implement newest display technology in it and took an "old" sensor. Anyway the move is quite good. I am sure that Olympus didn t fully listen to the pros by designing this camera. Marketing considerations have been prioritized. This is the right tool for all pros, reporters, fotojournalists, news agencies that now can have a rugged and reliable top notch tool for half the weight and half the price.

Nice video Joe. Joe, why don't you tell Olympus to make a 150mm f1.4? Give them a hard time .... tell them if Sigma and Nikon can make 105mm f1.4s for a full frames, surely, Olympus, rich with heritage of making incredible lenses (they made a 250mm f2.0 and a 350mm f2.8 back in the 70s(?) for their OM cameras) can make a 150mm f1.4 for M43. Visually, this lens will make images that will "look" like 300mm f2.8 on a full frame, a staple in the sports and wildlife photography. However, the actual exposure will still be at f1.4, giving a two stop advantage, which will close or even exceed the "quality" gap. Price the lens in the $2000 range (need to have killer AF motor that will top the 300mm f4), and I know Olympus with the OM-D E-m1X will crack the sports market stronghold of Canon and Nikon (sorry, Sony ain't there yet in sports, their 400 f2.8 is way too expensive).

My video is not a review and does not claim to be. I very openly explained that the camera is not for everyone and never suggested that anyone should run out and buy it. I ALWAYS teach to upgrade when and only when the camera will make a significant impact on your photography or workflow. I ALWAYS teach that there is NO camera that is perfect for everyone and what may be best for me is not necessarily best for you. So you can "mmmmmm" - but I will sleep with a very clear conscience that IO have been honest and transparent and continue to do my best to help people.

@@theJoeEdelman point taken but having watched about 6 1*st impressions/reviews* of this new beast today I would expect someone to give it a thumbs down for something they didnt like....its the way things are. @@thevalleywalker "it's the way things are" lol nice reason. Maybe he didn't see those problems as an impressionist. People like Jared, can definitely point out a whole list of problems because he's coming from a perspective as a FF photographer. Joe is an Oly professional. He's already used to the type of problems that one might come across. On top of that, his impressions were mostly him listing specs and his commentary on it, rather than saying "This new Spec is good/bad compared to Sony/Nikon/Canon this is why you should/n't buy it over the competition." He says stuff like "The IBIS is better than the EM1 and no other camera supports this to this level."

Possibly he still does

I currently own a m4/3 camera. Olympus has some nice gear but has taken too long to integrate certain features. My 1st dSLR, Canon (2007) had joystick for focus selection, could add menu items to fav section and I could save my camera settings to the CF card. Having to use a computer to save/restore camera settings and update firmware is so last century. The Panasonic G9 has has the joystick on it. Olympus has dropped the ball. The joystick should have been on the E-M1.

LOL - this coming from a guy who's own KZbin channel shows he watches and likes gear reviews from Manny Ortiz and Fro! Seriously Ivan Figueroa?

I really enjoy drinking water... Must make me a "water fan boy"? Can't someone enjoy something anymore without this sophomoric label being added by people who do not share their enthusiasm? So tiresome and purpose less. Great video Joe!

This camera is very interesting, but I've not even fully tapped out the features of my E-M1 mark 2!. As a bird/wildlfe shooter, I'm VERY interested in the 150-400mm lens. I'm sure it will kick the doors off the PanaLeica 100-400mm (good, but not great lens, imo) and will likely cost 2-3 times as much. Given it's constant aperture and that it's part Olympus' excellent PRO lens selection, it should be a superb zoom lens. I love my 300mm f4, but will likely give it up to afford this new lens. Crap! It's only January and I have to wait at least a year for it!!! And Joe, thanks for asking people to not be dumbasses!

"The wait is over...." My brain went "The WEIGHT is here..." LOL. Adding over 400 grams for a few "features" that the Mark 2 is missing doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Hope I'm wrong. Ugh - this could get rough.

The EM-1X is not that heavy when you get it in the hands. Actually, it feels really good...

Maybe if you have too much Olympus glass and money to spare and nowhere else to spend? Otherwise I don't see such a huge difference compared to the M1 Mark II.

A great cut the crap video, keep up the good work. In the old (??) days, you approach would be called results oriented, as opposed to process oriented.

All the other top professional expert photographers like Tony Northrup,Jared Polin,Eric Rossi,DP Review said terrible things about the Olympus OM-D E-M1X especially EVF being the worst they ever seen! No dynamic range! Im shocked.

To be fair to Joe, he is an oplympus sponsored artist, just like how half of the camera review youtubers are sponsored by sony. at least Joe is an actual photographer, not like the other sony guys ..... those guys are all hail sony, and half of them are pretty shitty photographers, or should i say insta photographers.

The new modes need more computing, and that's probably the future of photography in the long run. Not just a smartphone thing. And things like Live ND, ProCapture, etc. can't work on DSLRs -- Nikon and Canon smell the computational future, too, I think and hope to establish their replacement systems before that's mandatory in every camera. Just like IBIS pretty much is now, after a decade of Olympus doing it.

No, Joe, it is an overpriced huge camera. Olympus failed to make a good camera trying to imitate other brands. This is the opposite of an Olympus camera that usually from Olympus OM-1 was compact and affordable. This is the opposite, it is an expensive catafalque, overpriced of at least 1000$ and without any kind of compactness.

Not every camera is built for everybody. This is a specialized unit, just like Canon, Nikon and such have higher end for certain users. I would like to have this unit, but the cost is a bit up there for a hobby, but many can afford and do but it. It has features that I require for wildlife photography that the small compact m4/3 don't have.
