Note: firmware 3.0 for the E-M1 II adds the OM-Log400 profile and enables phase detection in video mode, which means that the C-AF performance of the camera should improve in comparison to the test above and be similar to the E-M1X.

sounds like a great update! I didnt know that was why the video AF was slow, I wonder why phase detect wasnt possible/available originally?
@ntsan5 жыл бұрын
are you gonna do an updated video on that? Curious how does it compare to Panasonic and other competitors with Firmware 3.0

Lately I have used my E-M1 IIs with FW 3.3 and 3.4 with video C-AF and face detection and it worked almost perfectly. The subject person was sitting and not moving too much, but I had only f/1.4 for background separation. The camera very reliably kept the face in focus.

Yes please continue with the audio commentary. Not all of us have superfast broadband and so can’t judge images from low resolution video alone with no commentary. Many thanks.

Mathieu - I really do love the commentary. Viewers can always turn the sound down if they don't want it, but we can't add it if it is not there. Always great to actually hear a professional's opinion. Great comparison and most useful.

Thank you so much for this video comparaison! It this case, EM1X all the way! Possible to make a video comparaison between Lumix G9 with firmware V1.2 and EM1X for BIF. You last video on the Lumix G9 C-AF did not have the V1.2 firmware update. Since you got a 75% keeping rate on the EM1X, I just wondered if you will get a 75% keeping rate on the G9 as well or even better using the firmware 1.2? In the past, Olympus video output was a bit softer compare to Lumix. Is it still the case with the EM1X? If you had to choose between the Olympus OMD-EM1X or the Panasonic Lumix G9 for Bird In Flight for both photo and video, which camera will you pick if the size of the camera did not matter ? Thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Honestly the gh5s is a better camera for video, that is if that’s what you’re intentions are or primary use. The em1x is a good camera , a good hybrid camera for stills and “some” video and for the price you can get the gh5s a speed booster and maybe a good sigma lens or a bunch of vintage lenses like fd mount, om mount, or screw mount to get a more traditional cinema style as oppose to the price of the em1x. Olympus really wants to be in the same league, the same professional league as canon and Nikon when it comes to sporting events and nature and perhaps professional portraits. They don’t want to be inline with Panasonic with the vloggers and you tubers. Though I think that’s a big mistake in Olympus’s part. They can really dominate the micro 4/3s market if they do consider video just as important like Panasonic has. They have the best autofocus and the best stabilization than any other micro 4/3s camera out there. So good that it would seem like you almost don’t even need a gimbal. In addition, if you really want a good video camera that’s a lot cheaper and dedicated for video would be the black magic pocket cinema camera 4K that is if you’re willing to wait for it or the z cam e2 though I think the bmpcc4k is a much better camera and has a ton of support. 10 bit 422 prores and black magic designs b raw. The detail is insane! The em1x is good if you’re a stills guy mostly but for just video I’d say the gh5s is a better option, perhaps even other cameras as well bmpcc4k, z cam e2, Sony a7 iii Nikon z or canon new mirrorless cams. Good video though!

OM Digital really needs to take the next step to make their cameras professional video tools. They're not all that far away, but why have they still never enabled 10-bit 4:2:2 color on any of their cameras, even if it's only over HDMI? Why can't they offer higher, more consistent data rates? My E-M1 II is a great stills camera and a good video camera, especially with current firmware. But I want it and/or its successors to be great video cameras, at least on par with the GH5 from 2017. What does that mean? It means 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording; 4K 60p; high-quality, detailed video at all resolutions and frame rates (not just DCI 4K at 24p); better dynamic range; a considerably more powerful audio pre-amp, dual UHS II card slots (only one card slot is UHS II); and assist tools like zebras, waveforms, and vectorscopes. Even my Lumix G85 has zebras.

Thank you very much for this video; do you mind if I ask a question? I'm looking to replace my GH5 due to the terrible autofocus; I love the quality of the video but I rely on good AF; how does the video quality of the EM1X compare to the GH5?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons5 жыл бұрын
The GH5 is much better in my opinion: colours, DR, high ISO, more settings etc.

Great review, nice to see the Falls, Twywn and Dovey. For me the massive price difference and size difference kills any interest in the newer camera. Olympus must do better if they wish to survive in a FF world. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧

As a video camera E-M1 II nad III has one huge downside that keeps me back. Limited recording time. Considering my needs it is basically a dealbreaker. And it is not justified by anything. Tax, heat or canibalization of other Olympus camera lines. And it could be easily lifted with a firmware update. Yet it hasn't been so far, which kinda sucks.

Good comparison. I am surprised by some of the improvements of the EM1X versus the EM1II. But since both cameras share most of the same hardware, it looks to me many of those improvements could, in theory at least, be applied to the EM1II by a simple firmware update.
@kidoftheworld55505 жыл бұрын
Can someone explain the price of E-M1x ? It's small sensor camera but cost like full frame! Why ?🤷♂️
@recklesscoding5 жыл бұрын
Because a camera is more than its sensor. It has world-class build quality, an extraordinary IBIS system, a very fast EVF, 2x Systems-on-Chip units to run those ML algorithms for AF, etc. Same reasons why the 1D (Canon) and Nikon's Dx lines cost more than their siblings, even if for example the D8x0 has better IQ than the Dx.
