THANK YOU for explaining what mode you need to be in to get the best video autofocus. Too many reviewers today get a camera, churn out a quick review, and say "autofocus sucks" when really they were in the wrong mode because they didn't have time to go through all the autofocus modes and determine how to best make them work. (same with your discussion about the stabilization modes) Thanks again - not only do you guys have great camera presence and delivery, but you also follow good critical review protocol.

Thanks for the video! Bummer the “240mbps” issue hasn’t been fixed. It was a headline feature of the E-M1 mk2 but now a lot more cameras have higher but rates and actually hit them. 👍 for the autofocus!

Phase detect autofocus for video on MFT. Yummy. Something Panasonic chooses not to do. Hopefully Olympus will develop the E-M1X further with firmware updates, like better face detect at longer distances, better bitrates, and more frame rates. And that IBIS does look good.

As much as I love Chris and Jordan, I do wonder if a camera like this or the E-M1 II with some compromises for video are still good enough for most people. Obviously the GH5 is capable of producing better video quality with more color space, but the better autofocus system (which also applies to stills) might be worth that tradeoff. Some of us are invested in Olympus glass, and DFD doesn't work with that. I own an original E-M1 and a G85. I find the G85's video quality and color even at 8 bit to be plenty for my needs, but I was getting frustrated with the video I was getting out of the original E-M1.

Thanks Jordan. I think videos from people like yourself who actually know what they are talking about are so important. Other than Medium Format such as the Fuji GF-X system whilst it can record 1080p video is NOT the reason why anyone would buy that camera/system. Pretty much all other cameras coming out from the companies are much more 'hybrid' cameras. Some maybe more photcentric (aka Sony A7RIII for example) and others more videocentric (aka GH5). Chris does a superb job talking about the photo capabilities/ergos. It is though important to have that 'balanced' by someone like yourself, whom I respect their opinion, to talk about the video/ergos. I personally would welcome for each new camera release, 2 videos or one video split into two distinct parts. Wherby Chris does his usual photo-focused review and then your goodself doing an in-depth video-focused review.

I'd say that this Olympus may find some use as a kind of action-ILC, when you expect a lot of dust, dirt, rain, etc happening on location. I know you can order a waterproof case for GH5 and even go diving, but they are pricey, fragile, hard to use, and you have lens limitation, and all that. I hope that E-M1X will be noticed in that way, and that Olympus will make better firmware this year, because the processor obviously has a lot of firepower, it just needs to be told what to do.

"The 1dX II which some crazy people use for vlogging" 😂😂😂 Peter Mc Canon, where are you
@StarGateSG76 жыл бұрын
Don't knock the Canon 1Dx Mk2 for Vlogging! It's FANTASTIC for that! You just need the 5 inch screen on top on a swivel mount for your selfie expression videos and you are GOOD TO GO! The Canon is a bit heavy but is TRULY a pro camera and if you use C-log or one of the uploadable Technicolor logs those are FANTASTIC too for dynamic range expansion during colour grading! -- Now of course if you DON'T want to spend $6000 plus another $2000 for a 5 inch external swivelling screen, then this Olympus will do you JUST FINE !!! Shoot at 24 fps at 1/48th of a second shutter speed and add a diffusion spun cloth to your on-camera LED lighting source (softens the light by a lot!) and you WILL make good video! I happen to like this Olympus camera even though I mostly shoot on Canon C300/C700's and 1Dx Mk2's. The Olympus has SUCH GOOD WEATHER SEALING that it is the most SIGNIFICANT feature for videographers PERIOD! You can take this camera EVERYWHERE! Cold! Hot! Wet! Snow! Rain! If you're into FAST ACTION outdoor sports such as skiing, snowboarding, mountain biking or Moto-Cross or Rally Car or F1 Track racing or hard-lighting condition stadium sports such as soccer, hockey, basketball, US football, rugby then this is ALSO a GREAT CAMERA !!! If you CANNOT SPEND $6000 on a Canon 1Dxmk2, then this is the next best thing for PRO-LEVEL weather sealing and ruggedness in a reasonably compact package! Just remember to get the BEST LENSES you can afford, which means buying an f/1.2 or f1/4 50mm prime lens and a GREAT 70mm to 200mm ZOOM and a GREAT 16mm to 35 mm ZOOM and if you are able, add an adapter to the SIGMA 150 mm to 650 mm SPORTS or CONTEMPORARY ZOOM LENS for those awesome long shots! .

About the combination of features: Jorden mentions the lack of combination between ND and timelapse. In photomode, there are the same problems with HighRes and HDR or HDR an silentmode etc. These limitations are only related to firmware and should be no problem to fix!

I hope they'll soon release the E-M5 III with the improved video AF, IBIS and face detection, a small camera like that would make a lot more sense for M43 shooters.
@genx-tv6 жыл бұрын
Sure, but will Olympus include phase detect AF for video in the E-M5 III or E-M1 III? I would buy one of those camera's in a heartbeat. I have a feeling that Olympus wants to upsell you towards the E-M1X. So what can the E-M5 III and E-M1 III have? The E-M5 III will simply get 4K with contrast detect AF. And the E-M1 III will be postponed to 2020, and might by then get phase detect AF for video. And it will probably cost 1999 Euro. Mmm. But don't wait for Panasonic to give you phase detect AF, as it will never happen. It's crazy that we have to wait so long to have a MFT camera with good AF in video. Olympus could have cornered a certain market if they didn't focus too much on photography.

isnt the weird jello effect of the stabilization is a product of using wide angle lenses which is fixed on the body whereas the sensor itself is floating so the distorted areas are not constant hence u get the jello effect? I dont think u can see those at longer focal lenghts
@andreventure88716 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I really wanted Jordan to say the auto focus sucks, but it looks great, and I already have all the m43 gear, and that stabilization... Given how ‘head-in-the-sand’ Olympus has been in the past I didn’t think Olympus would survive vey long. But, with this camera Oly is buying itself a seat in the future. It is not perfect with video, but neither were the first two gens of the Panny GH series. This camera’s video features is a good grounding for the next Oly video hybrid to match it with the GH line. I know there are people who prefer a stills-only camera, but they are a shrinking portion of camera buyers, and most of us demand a more video-centric capability for a camera. Finally Olympus is joining the party.

A resounding Yes for more video centric episodes. Camera companies are putting more and more focus on video recording and I don't see why DPReview shouldn't do the same. I'm an Olympus shooter. I own an original E-M1. It kills me that Olympus can't seem to figure out how to lead in video. The GH5 has been out for two years now and is available for roughly half the price of this. Why shouldn't this camera be at least as good as that for video? The phase-detect autofocus for stills with my Olympus glass is what keeps me using the E-M1 instead of a Panasonic camera, but we shouldn't have to make these tradeoffs. I want the E-M5 Mark III to have PDAF and at least all the video features from this camera if not better. Or maybe they can push out a firmware update for the E-M1 II that gives it these extra video features...the 1080p / 120 and OMlog. But if I were to buy a $3000 camera, it had damn well better be a beast for video. So why can't Olympus make this a 10-bit camera that also shoots 4K 60p at a consistently high bitrate? It's not like they're Canon and have a line of cinema camcorders to protect. Is it not the same sensor as the GH5? Did they pack too many other things into it to give people what they actually WANTED? I want a GH5 with phase-detect autofocus. Is that really too much to ask?
