OLYMPUS OM-D E-M5 Mark III - 4K EXAMPLE FROM NZ

In October 2019, Olympus Australia challenged me to #BreakFree with the newly released OM-D E-M5 Mark III. The goal, to incorporate the new cameras into a fast-paced wilderness adventure.
Over 6-gruelling days, Brodie and I subjected three of the pre-production E-M5 Mark III's to absolute punishment. Torrential rain, snow, ice, impacts, and just about every other elemental hardship that comes with an NZ adventure.
I'm not sure there is another photographer who had used the cameras to this depth. Over 60 hours straight, we had them firing, shooting both stills and video. This is just a sample of a few 4k clips we took during our time there.

It would be cool if you wrote which lens you used for each scene at the bottom of the video. You make the camera look very cool but the lenses aren’t cheap so it would be nice to see an example of each one in action.

Hi mate, thanks for stopping by. Ahh it wasn't really about showing the lenses and more about what the camera can film. Any of the lenses with a linear Manual focus would be more than adequate!

These are some epic shots. I have an EM5 MKiii and am trying to learn more of how to use it best for video. Do you know if there is a way to shoot log (flat) footage for color grading later?

Hey mate, thanks so much for the love. Unfortunately, you can't shoot in LOG. Luckily, the standard colours straight out of camera are quite good. Only problem with the footage is it's too oversharp for my tastes. I normally slap a 1/8 mist filter on the front to soften it up and that works a treat. also helps the highlights a bit as it blooms them, rather than looking crushed. Also, you need to remember the light i shot in here was perfect. And a lot of the travel guys you see shooting epic footage was all shot in good light, and that makes a huge difference as you can get epic looking 8-bit footage straight off the bat.

@@etchd_ Ah man ok, thats what I was worried about haha. I is true though, the colors and rendering is beautiful on the olympus. And great tip about the 1/8 filter! I have found that as well, it gets a bit too sharp for some reason. I will have to try that out. Thanks a ton for the tips man, really appreciate it.

@@brandonsaulphoto haha! You can still get beautiful stuff on it though, soften it up and you will be good to go. Just make sure you expose nicely and use an ND. Where are you based mate? I sell the 1/8 filters here in aus!

There is this oddly named “Picture Mode” that you can turn on the video settings. Seemingly having nothing to do with still pictures, it actually a fairly gentle flat color profile for video footage. You can than apply the Olympus LUT to it in post. I have being doing it this way (only via C4K shooting mode) for a while now, I I generally like the results.

Hi mate, thanks so much! all this was shot on the EM5 MKIII for its release. Hardly any grading was performed on it and it was put together in Resolve! Having great light really helps when shooting footage in 8-bit on these cameras.

There are no good cinematic videos shot with this camera, just adverts about how good it is. It makes me wonder if this camera is so good at making videos, if no one is posting anything.

Sorry, you misunderstood me. I meant that if I want to find beautiful videos on youtube shot on olympus cameras, for example I search for "olympus OM-5 cinematic" as a rule I find only videos shot exclusively by olympus ambassadors. And I would like to find videos recorded by ordinary independent authors who are not interested in promoting the brand olympus and Om system. And there are practically no such videos, though if for example try to find such videos from pansonic GH-5 or sony 6700 cameras, there will be a lot of them. I conclude that either it is impossible to shoot such beautiful videos with this camera, or the camera is so unpopular that few people post videos with it. @@etchd_
