You make the most sense of all the people who try to explain Olympus photography settings, thank you for being clear, precise, and slow enough for me to take it in. Would you use Live Time or Live Composit to take Fireworks please. Liz.

I'd use Live composite. Would need to take a few test shots then should be okay. I've never taken fireworks photos before, so I'm really only guessing.

Rob - I could have put this comment in any of dozens of your videos, because they are all so useful. I've been shooting Olympus since the first OM-1 and yet still I've learned a lot about my camera's (EM5ii mainly) capabilities from you. The Olympus community is lucky to have someone like you. My deepest thanks. Oh, and I do recommend a remote trigger. Olympus used to provide one with the camera (I think they stopped that about the time they introduced the MFT format). Besides long-exposure work it's useful for selfies, animation, and situations where it's difficult to actually touch your camera.

Hello Rob, It has taken me a little bit time, to resetting my camera. After that I had to made my own setting and checked how it worked. The biggest problem I had it was with orange and yellow colours, they were too intensive. And nothin was changed why? Because I realised that I used ART1 mode :) yes on this mode colours are intensive. I have still problem with too bright pictures or maybe it is my belief. So I practice with landscapes photos using diferent exposure compensation, aperture, ISO and exposure time. I' watching your films for beginners and step by step I'm going forward. Making photos it is such a pleasure, Anka

Rob, I wanted to give you some GREAT feedback, I have learnt so much from your KZbin videos and the OMD 10. Seriously Olympus should be sponsoring you big time. As as advanced amateur I went from P&S canon sx510 to Olympus OMD 10 and just can't get over how much this camera can do. We were recently photographing at a night light of a local abbey and the live time function just blew my mates mind away. He had a DSLR Pentax and didn't realise cameras could do this. For me, having seen your videos I genuinely still expected the 1, 2 and 3rd attempt to be rubbish. But no - pretty good results from day 1!

Thank you Rob. You're a lovely guy and you've helped me so much with my brand new E-m10 mark iii. I had a Sony RX100 m3 which I knew inside out and was feeling rather overwhelmed with the step up to the Olympus. You've cut my learning time by about 90% and taught me a good few things I didn't know or had forgotten. I am so very grateful to you. Ok, lots of menu options on the miii are different but even searching for the settings you were mentioning did help me start to find my way around! Please don't stop - it's so generous of you to give up so much time to help total strangers. You're wonderful!

Hi Rob, as a note for new M10-iii owners - DO NOT USE THE new dial "AP" option to operate Live Composite or Live Time as you cannot set ISO or Aperture. Excellent video demo of the OLympus cameras...! Thank You Rob for an amazing job. PS: In Time mode, I put a black card, or my hand, in front of the lens, to stop the exposure, before I touch the exposure button the second time. PPS: For several hours exposure, I would guess, Mulitple exposures could make multiple 30 min exposures. Noise reduction will have to be off...then again the noise is a little different for each exposure, thus cancelling itself out. I remember Tony Northrop made multiple exposures this way, to achieve blurred smooth water. Again Thank You Rob for your efforts.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
I totally forgot about using a black card! I don't do much long exposure. These long videos force me to stop and restart because of the video time limit and I lose my train of thought. Thanks for sharing your tips!

I hope you don't mind another comment, but I've enjoyed watching this video, pausing it, and playing with my cameras! As regards a remote shutter, if you have a smart phone (I have an iPhone), you can use the OI.Share app as a remote shutter. I just configured my E-PL7 (also have E-M10.2 and E-M1.1), for Live Bulb and the shutter button on the phone worked to begin the exposure, the live view updated on the phone, and when I removed my finger from the shutter button on the phone, it ended the exposure. I also have a USB remote, but I often use the wife, (Heh! Auto-correct!) wi-fi remote because the phone is almost always with me.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
I love comments, especially from more experienced owners. I've only been shooting Olympus for little over a year. Yeah, I didn't cover using the app. You still have to set everything up in camera before going into the app, but it works great as a remote shutter. I don't do enough long exposure to see if this makes for a better workflow rather than just using delayed shutter and bulb timer and/or black card.

Hello Rob, thank you so much for really useful tutorial. For me it was a gem. I do long time exposures for my landscape photography but didn't know half of the stuff you explained. I do use the external programmable remote control which works great. Again, Thank you Rob.

Thanks Rob Ive just bought the EM1Mk2 after six years using the EM5 so Im working through your tutorials which are a great help I have the Olympus Image Share App on my phone which has a wireless remote shutter but haven't used it yet.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
em1mk2 is awesome! I prefer a wireless remote shutter release vs the app. The app requires wifi which shortens the battery run time. You have to setup the camera before the starting the app anyway, so why not just set the shutter delay while your at it?

Dear Rob, I am amazed by your very detailed knowledge and enjoy your various lessons tremendously. I have one suggestion : why don't put put all the knowledge into one book (per each different Olympus model). so that you can also get a fair return to the fantastic job you are doing plus make these cameras with their very detailed - and complicated -setting easier to follow by Olympus newcomers??? I believe with your followers here on this channel plus all the other social medias you are using as well, every publisher should be very happy to get your books printed. And for us, who bought or intend to buy one of these little jewels, we are assured that there is one handbook available, which can explain to everybody everything which is possible with this camera. I am sure I am not the first one suggesting this to you - but I do hope, I will be the last one! Please let me and all of your devote followers know when you will publish such OLYMPUS HANDBOOK for each of the last new models. With my best regards from Indonesia Your M. Schuette

Thanks. Don't know if this kind of thing lends itself to a book. It's so much easier to just do a video. I might do a video "course" that puts things together in a more organized fashion.

Bulb/Time Monitor may be also about protecting the photographer's night vision or at least that's a positive side effect. If your sight is hit by a bright LCD screen after ending the exposure, it will take some time before the night vision recovers.

Right on there Rob! That’s a lot of work and expertise in your videos. This one seems necessarily long. A lot of settings are changed to achieve time exposures in the various modes you presented. A suggestion you might add putting these settings into a custom mode making it easier to not pick your way back out of the time exposure settings one by one to get back to “Normal” settings. Perhaps you covered that but maybe missed it. Yeah, good stuff, thanks!

I had been wondering why the Live Time update just up-and-stopped without warning. Mystery solved, thanks, though like you I sure wonder why Olympus set it up that way; having to estimate your exposure time beforehand seems to work against the advantage of having a live update in the first place.

TL;DR Bulb exposure settings 1) Shooting Menu 2 -> Anti-shock delay -> 2 sec 2) A -> AF/MF -> AEL/AFL -> S-AFmode 3 (Fn1 back focus) 3) C -> Image Stabilizer -> S-IS Off 4) D -> Live Boost -> Bulb/Time -> On2 5) E -> Noise Reduct -> On 6) E -> Noise Filter -> Low (or off) 7) Set dial to Manual (M) 8) Scroll shutter speed above 60" for Bulb -> Live Time -> Live Comp Use flashlight to light subject and hit Fn1 to back focus Save these settings in a "MySet" (Menu 1 -> Reset/Myset)

Anti-shock on the E-PL8, if it's like the E-PL7 (and I think it is), is in the Exposure (Gear "E") menu. It's the last item on the second page of the exposure settings. Turn that on and you get everything but silent shutter.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
YES! It is there. Only works with 2 sec delay, but nice to have. Thank you! I just got this camera, loving it so far.
@daverogers8926
@daverogers8926 6 жыл бұрын
I think if you look again, you'll notice that from the SCP, you can select 2s and 12s anti-shock delay. In the "E" menu item, you can select a number of different delays, the longest being 30s, and the shortest 0s, which is the electronic first curtain setting for shutter speeds below 1/320s. I confess, I don't understand the reason for the variety of different time settings in the Exposure menu item. On an E-PM1, you could use those settings, continuous shooting ("burst") mode and a remote trigger to create a timelapse series. You would have to create the movie in something like Quicktime, but you could take an unlimited (battery and card space permitting) number of images at intervals with some control over the interval. But I enjoyed this video and it's very well done.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
I see. Not sure why anti shock has to be turned on and isn't just in the scp like everything else. I'm working with the camera and will have to do a separate series for the PL8. Right now I'm working with the ema-1 mic adapter. Thanks for the feedback and info!
