Brilliant feature and excellent tutorial. Last night... I shot some star trails with the good old multiple shot and then blend method and then tried the same with live composite. Piece of cake doing it with the live composite. No need to do postprocessing for hours, while so many images are blended together and the file size is just that of one normal file. Amazing. I intend to try this with feature for some food photography. Thank you very much for your time and effort.

Rob, you start off saying you're not creative - but not bad at all in that department! Regardless, I'm a pretty advanced amateur and had yet to fully grasp the methodology of LiveComp prior to watching you're video. But you're "uncreative creative" methodical and "unemotional" approach is perfect in explaining the methodology. Thanks so much!!

Hi Rob, What a fantastic tutorial, I'm in the process of switching fully from a Nikon D750 to the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II, as I get older I find myself needing to move to the "lighter life". Live Comp is one of the main reasons I'm moving to Olympus but I'm still trying to get my head around the Olympus menus and my question to you is related to this video, I see the default setting for the monitor is -7 which I understand that it's better for the monitor to be dimmer as in most situations for light painting and star trails etc it will help but the setting I can't get my head around is in menu D2 - Live View Boost (Live Composite) what exactly do the options do (Off, On1 & On2)? Any help appreciated as like I said these menus are alien to me, Thanks, Billy

Hi Rob It’s me again having now watched this aspect of light drawing and having watched the Olympus one some time ago, I think combiningt the two gives a lot of info, one criticism on yours, I think perhaps showing the models or figures First may help in understanding the composition or what the creature looks like. Rob I’m being picky, I learned a lot, more than the Official Olympus one, as you explained by demonstration that the picture or shutter doesn’t pick up things that are darker, so wearing dark gloves means your hands become invisible, like a magic trick. Thank you!

@RobTrek

I don't think it works for aurora. You usually don't need a remote shutter release for live comp since the exposure is generally very dark to start with. Some people just put a black card or anything very dark in front of the lens before the exposure starts and just before it ends.

Done Livecomp on a couple of occasions, it’s really fun and you learn a lot about exposure. But I don’t seem to be able to use a 2 or 10 second timer when using this feature which is annoying due to possible camera shake... I guess I could always use the Olympus app or a release to trigger the camera, but I rarely use those. Am I right or has I just not found the timer feature?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't found a timer either. Best way to start the shutter is with a black card or just use your hand to cover the front of the lens so the image is completely black when starting.

Hi Rob nice video you got there. Just a question, in live composite, technically you can use the flash right (for the base exposure), but it will be blown out since the fastest shutter speed is half a second. Is my understanding correct?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, shutter speed is half a second. Whether or not the image will be blown out would depend on power output of the flash and distance of the flash from the subject. In this video, no way I could use a flash. If doing a car or building in low light, then flash might be okay.

Thank you, Rob - Great video, and you definitely ARE creative! One thing that confuses the baggeebies out of me is the interval or shutter setting. I just do not understand if the TIME setting you choose is actually the interval between shutter releases (frequency) with shutter speed unknown, OR the actual shutter speed (open time) with the interval unknown? I've watched several videos (yours is the best by far) but the answer is still unclear. Are you setting shutter speed, or are you setting how OFTEN the shutter opens??? The elapsed time counter on the camera display seems to indicate interval only -- please set me straight. Thanks, sir!
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's actually just shutter speed @ 1/2 second in this case, you're not setting an interval. The liveview is updating in real time while compositing the images.

This is a really nice idea (especially the flame part). I was looking up for tips on this. So is this on all OM-D cameras? Including the older em5,10, EM-1 (all mark 1s) etc.? Also, would using a polarizing filter cut out the reflection we're seeing on the LCD screen?

Great video as always Rob, just a quick question, why do you start with an under exposed shot, if the live composite only adds new light you picture won't end up with the correct exposure and end up a bit dark?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
Another way to think of it is how a painter starts with a white canvas then adds darker colors. With light painting, you start with a black canvas then add lighter colors. I could keep adding light until everything is correctly exposed. However, if I did start with a correct exposure, adding more light would start to overexpose it, which cannot be corrected after you start. If that is the effect you are going for, then that's fine - like creating a high key portrait. Hope that helps. Thanks for your question!

I noticed you were saving the images as jpeg Rob. Will it save a raw file in live comp.?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can save as raw. I do jpg mostly for the tutorials. I'll have to start doing tutorials with raw. Thanks for your question!

@@RobTrek I've been using Olympus cameras for years, (including the C series, and the D series, and the E series), but their current cameras have so many features, it's nice to have somebody who puts the time into figuring them out and sharing. Olympus camera manuals are terrible, cryptic, almost laughable really. How can you be so good at engineering and so bad at explaining your product? It's like they don't want you to understand these features! I'm sure I'm not the only one of your subscribers who hasn't bothered with a lot of this stuff because Olympus doesn't bother to explain how they work. Maybe you should write a book.

Hello Rob, I'm really impressed! Great video... and to my opinion that looked very creative. I really like the second photo of your creature in front of the flames. Really really good! I hava a question. When using live composite you seemed to have taken hundreds of pictures. Is this right? Or do photos that are taken this way count as if you'd only taken one shot when reading out the shutter count. I ask this because I had problems with the shutter of my E-M1 twice and had to send it in to Olympus. So I wouldn't want to do hundreds of pictures in just a few minutes just to have two pictures at least. Hope you understand what I mean.

It combines all the images into a single file, so there will not be hundreds of files on your memory card like when doing focus bracketing. :) Thanks for your question!
@Teeum5
@Teeum5 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know that but that was not what I meant. What about the number of shutter counts? Will they go up for hundreds as in your two pictures seen?
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
I checked it this morning. It adds a couple of shutter counts when the mechanical shutter fires, but when doing the composite in silent shutter, the shutter count didn't seem to change. I'm going to look into this some more. Thanks!

M1 Mark III: I thought the base exposure was supposed to be what you want or normal exposure for the foreground. ...ok. this i really a light painting, not car trails, lightening, or fireworks, with a desired foreground and exposure on the foreground.

You are the coolest guy...you could have been a doctor..or you might have already been one..or are one..I dont know ...Im just rambling...Im looking at buy an E-M10...and using my two lens from my E520...I just dont know what to do...the M10 is at like 175$...with charger, strap...and no lens..the only other camera Im looking at is a(bad word here) a Sony..SLT-A57.
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 5 жыл бұрын
Both are very interesting cameras. You'll need an adpater to use your e520 lenses on the em10, so be sure to add that into the cost. I don't think the e520 lenses will work on the sony. If you're thinking long term the em10 micro 4/3 mount is still around. You'll be able to buy new or slightly used for a long time. The Sony A mount is all but dead. You'll have to buy used most of the time. I can't say one camera is better than the other, but I am familiar with Olympus and I have tons of tutorials you can follow. There may be a Sony SLT channel, but I have no idea.

OM-D 10 Mark II user here. If the camera can't focus and create the first base shot which is typical at night capturing lightning then Live Composite will fail despite the camera's prompt that it's ready. The only recourse is setting focus to manual. Frustrating to discover this firsthand.

Yes, low light focusing is a problem.

Put a black cloth over the display of the front camera and the lens (front) if the filming camera. so, a black tunnel between camera's. This will kill the reflections on the display that your viewers see. For the rest... great video's
@RobTrek
@RobTrek 6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking of attaching an hdmi recorder to the main camera and get direct capture of the screen. Still, the black cloth is a simpler solution. Thanks for the tip!
