The 2019 sounds so thin compared to the 1942 one. I wonder why. You say something like the age of the 1942 model has somehow 'ripened', like wine. What do you think, will the 2019 get the same sound 80 years from now or is Martin simply not able to create a sound like that right now. Groetjes.
@willemvandijk8860
@willemvandijk8860 5 жыл бұрын
@Iliya Yanev I just read somewhere that somewhere in the late 60's, because of high demand Martin changed their way of drying the wood from air-dried to kiln-dried. That could be the reason why the 2019 model sounds different. But in that case the quality of the 2019 will never improve in such a way that it will sound like the 1942 model. Which would be a shame because the 1942 model sounds so much better.
@screaminbabyjones
@screaminbabyjones 5 жыл бұрын
@@willemvandijk8860 It sounds thin primarily because it's been a guitar for less than 2 months. It hasn't settled, and it hasn't been played. The other guitar has been played (I assume) for 70+ years. The Adirondack Spruce top/Brazilian Rosewood back/sides doesn't hurt either--especially in loudness. Give the 2019 D-28 10+ years and it'll be a very different sounding instrument.
@willemvandijk8860
@willemvandijk8860 5 жыл бұрын
@@screaminbabyjones that may be true, but buying a new one hoping it will be as good as the 1942 one is an expensive experiment if you have to wait for the guitar to age appropriately. I couldn't wait so long, I'll be dead for quite a while to be able to hear it.

Rare old and collectible has got to be most of the price. Getting old materials to make a new guitar isn't easy or cheap but you can find anything if you search long and hard. Let's say 5K to find equivalent materials. Then find a luthier who can do the quality of work you want. I'd say you could easily get the equivalent sound for less than half the price.

Thanks for the comparison. After careful review, I feel that the vintage martin has a mid scoop and the new D28 is more balanced tonally. Like when you get a high quality acoustic electric and u lower the midst ... that's what I feel the vintage sounds like. The new one is non-scalloped braced which I thin is intended to make a more balanced tone. I think the vintage is scalloped which I believe resemble the HD28. Both great guitars, slightly different sounds. Love my D28!

When Paul starts playing at around 2:37 does anybody know what chords he's playing? I've never seen those chord shapes before and I'm intrigued to know what they are and what the correct finger pattern is.

You can really tell your picking on the 2019 is activating the compressor on your audio, whereas the 1942 is so resonant that you don't have to work so hard to get a strong sound out of it. Seems like you really have to convince that 2019 to play in comparison to the 1942.

Good lawd! I’m one of those tone-deaf people that annoys my friends when we go to the guitar shop because I can barely tell the difference between how a $300 and a $3000 guitar sounds (hey, I’m a bass player), but this is like night and day. That 1940s guitar sounds AMAZING! Buy it! Please! You only live once!
