This is my 2nd go. I had OM D 5Mark II previous. But it wasn't near the stellar performer this new one is. Great!!!

Continuity with older products would be reason to stick with the brand.

Very cool improvements! I really can't wait to get my copy (it's on its way). The AF shots look insanely good, even through the branches! Unexpected that it would have improved that much! I'm curious about your mentioned findings regarding the ISO performance and dynamic range. It seems in the last couple of days a lot of tests came out that seem to contradict each other (no improvement, some improvement, full 2 stop improvement). So very interested in your video about that, and how you tested it out!

There are youtube videos by other ambassadors claiming the improvement in high ISO performance. But what they show are not convincing enough (for a 2 stops improvement). Besides, a recent post in 43rumor site says that the dynamic range of OM-1 is the same as E-M1 III according to the test of a website. So I am very curious and looking forward to your coming video doing tests about these.

Yeah, curious about that as well. Just about every OM System Ambassador has confirmed the marketing, but I have yet to see an independent reviewer say the same, and a view other reliable ones say the opposite, most notably DPReview and PhotonsforPhotos.

I'm going to wait awhile and continue to watch every video about this new camera but it sure looks good enough that I will invest in MFT more fully. I have a Mk II body as well as two Panasonic bodies, G7 & 9, as well as the Pen F. I also have some of the Pro lenses. Overall, I really like the Olympus system and see it as my future because of the weight and size compared to APS-C and FF but have not committed fully by buying into the telephoto lenses like the 300 and 150-400. I do a lot of bird photography and auto racing and I have been lugging around the big heavy systems a long time but as I get older, I'm not so excited about doing that anymore.

The PD usb charging is a godsend. I was out in a hide for a birding the other day. For some reasons, the extra battery that cam with the camera delivery didn’t come till later this month so I was quite worried that one battery couldn’t make it for an extended period of use so I charged it while shooting through a power bank and it worked perfectly. I managed a half day shooting and when I finished shooting, the battery is still 100% charged so it is quite convenient.

We here in Australia got ours on 1st March. For once we beat you Northerners. As an aside,people have been saying that Topaz Denoise doesn't work on the files yet. I have Topaz as a Lightroom plugin, I export high ISO files as Tiff files from LR to Topaz DeNoise, it works just fine in cleaning the image. I contacted Topaz and they agreed that a Tiff from LR will be handled the same as any Tiff . The Raw update will be coming when more cameras are out there. Also, Sharpen AI and Gigapixel work as well, so long as you export Tiff files. Keep up your excellent work.

I say that it all depends on what you are going to photograph. Over all, general photography the difference is not that much. If you need faster camera for fast action, sports etc. then it makes sense to upgrade.

There might many reasons why videos are blurry, but I do not think the software is one. Unless it takes time for the videos to render properly and the video can be seen in full resolution.

I have (2) OM-1's and (1) E-M1 Mk iii. I have noticed a difference in focusing speed *_favoring the Mk iii_* . Both OM-1 cameras, in AF-S, seem to quickly run through the entire focusing range before providing the "Green Box" indicating focus. The Mk iii does not do this, and therefore, IMHO, focuses faster than both of my OM-1's. It would appear to me that the Mk iii is using phase detect AF and the OM-1's are not. Can you confirm or refute this? Is there a setting I've missed? It does not seem to change with lens used. Assistance greatly appreciated!

I did not have any problems with OM-1s AF. It worked a bit differnet than E-M1 Mark III. Sinbe I do not have OM-1 or E-M1 MarkIII any more I cannot test it now.

I got my hands on one last Thursday and it was amazing. I use bluetooth file transfer a lot and it was so much faster on the OM-1 as compared to my EM5II. The grip is my favourite feature. I just picked up my OM1 today after work. It's charging now. Was interesting to find cable grip and cable clamp for the charge cable. I wonder do they think the USB C charging port is ripe to be damaged? Makes me wonder. Protecting themselves from warranty claims?

Those cable holders are quit common when using the HDMI port for external monitors. It also secures the cable if you are using the USB charging/power when using the camera. The cable does not come off by accident.

Peter; can you save your video settings to the Custom Buttons as you can with your photo settings? I'm asking as the OM-1 Manual (see page 56, Save Settings 1) appears to have the same text from the previous EM-1 M3 manual that says (Choose a mode other than Video ...). This may be an error in the OM-1 Manual.

If Video is on from Mode Dial you cannot save he settings. The only way to do it, is to save them with the other settings.

I was hoping that too. There is a work around. When saving setting to C1, 2,3 or 4 also the video settings are saved. What I have done is having the video settings on C3 and C4. C1 and C2 are for photography.

I would go with the new OM-1 if it fits your budget. E-1X is also a good choice, but I would go with newer one.

I'd love to get a RAW file that I could edit to test the dynamic range. The OM1 looks an excellent camera especially with the 10-25mm Panasonic lens. Does the OM1 compete with a fullframe camera with dynamic range.

I'm afraid I'm somewhat out of this discussion because I'm still shooting with my various original Four Thirds cameras which BTW I still get a lot of pleasure using but I'm straying from my point here. I don't do a lot of telephoto work, tending towards the wide angle end. A principal reason for this is that I am permanently disabled by my dysfunctional left arm - I am left handed - and I find big heavy lenses difficult to handle properly. I have 2 telezoom lenses, the kit 40-150mm f3.5.version ,+ 75-300mm. The 40-150mm is my favourite for obvious reasons. I don't mind that it's a bit slower than the Pro lenses since the small size is for me at any rate a worthwhile tradeoff but I would appreciate Pro-grade optics. I can see the difference between the grades, esp. since all my other lenses are Pro versions. Obviously Four Thirds has been and left us ( a decision I still lament) but I am a little disappointed that no-one appears to have spotted the break in the chain for a small but Pro quality telezoom that is easy to use and carry and that gap is just as wide in MFT as it was in the original FT. I do hope to upgrade my existing system with an MFT body at least. I think I'll be happy to settle for the adapter for the rest of my glass since I no longer work professionally and am enjoying doing my own thing in my retirement years 😀!

Just got my OM-1 and its fantastic! But I have problem with raw processing. Its supported by Lightroom but images there get really grainy. If I process it through OM Workspace all is fine but there are limited opportunities there. Do you have experience of this and what software do you use for RAW processing for OM-1?

OM Workspace is the best software for OM-1 files. I have not seen any differences that actually matter. Do you have the latest version of Lightroom Classic?

It turns out that LR applies 40 steps of sharpening as std (I think std should be 0 on all adjustments) and that really destroys the image. So without sharpening it looks better but I must admit OM WS does a much better job with details.

It is hard to say. For landscape photographers it does not offer that much new. LiveND64 is maybe something. For action it does. The subject recognition is improved a lot. AF works better for moving subjects.

I think they will. They just released new firmware updates to quite a few cameras. E-M5 MKIII and E-M10 MKIV were also included. It added some improvements in AF performant when using primes. Now it is also possible to use 40-150mm f4 for focus stacking. (not E-M10 MKIV)

Yes you can. It works better now because the camera is so much faster. Of course if the subject moves a lot then there might be some problems.

Hi peter, for me I just returned the OM1. I was given a loan of the OM1 to test before buying. I wanted the OM1 for bird photography. I shoot a lot at 4000 ISO because of tree canopy reducing light and I wanted to see for myself the improvement on the ISO performance and noise reduction in the field. Sadly from my tests I saw very LITTLE improvements in the ISO performance. For me if I continued with the OM1 purchase I would have found I still need to do a lot of post processing in Topaz for noise. How did you find it? For me I could not see the point of upgrading from my OM-D E-m1 MkII to the OM1 if I am still going to need to do a lot of noise reduction in post. Thanks for your views cheers from Australia

I did see an improvement, but yes DeNoising is still needed if I use high ISO. For bird photography there are so much improvement in AF and speed that I think it is with getting for bird photography. For other type of photography E-M1 MKII is just fine.

Thanks for the information, it seems very interresting. I have some questions on the OM1: * Does the ND filter works in vidéo ? * About the dynamic range, you say +2stops, but what is the number ? 12 stops ? * Is the dynamic range is same for photo and vidéo ?

LiveND works only when making photographs. Dynamic range is about one stop. Is there a mistake in the video? I have not tested the dynamic range in video. It has OM400Log and HLG modes that can produce more DR.

Hi Peter, how does the shutter button compare to the OM-D EM1 ii? The latter is rather undefined between pressing it halfway and actually taking a picture. I like the EM5 ii shutter button a lot better than that of the EM1 ii. The same goes for the two main wheels. How is the OM1 in that respect? Finally, is it suitable for people with glasses? The Panasonic G9 shines in this respect, can the OM1 keep up? Kind regards, Luuk

The shutter button feels juts fine. No accidental shots so far. the front wheel is more like it is in E-M1X. I will get used to it. I use glasses and it is not problem at least for me. i am so used to it.

Peter: I am a wildlife photographer and as such am very interested in understanding how the OM1 performs in low light, with fast shutter speeds and higher ISO settings. My wildlife photographer colleagues rave about the Sony A1 for fast subject autofocus acquisition and excellent resolution and dynamic range in low light. If you are aware, I am curious as to how the OM1 would compare to the Sony A1 in this regard. Thank you. PJI

I have not tested Sony A1. It hard to say. It also a camera with a totally different price range.

It is curious that some tests (dpreview, etc) claim there is no improvement in DR or high ISO noise, while several testers (OMDS ambassadors, etc) say there is an improvement. Could it be that you are talking about different things? E.g, that the new sensor has a noise type, etc that makes it possible to draw more information from the images?

I think we have done it a bit different way and talk about a bit different thing. I see an improvement if I lift up the shadows. The new camera is better. I will do a full test on this later.

Can anyone tell me how much latency is present when outputting video via the external HDMI port? I am wanting to use the OM-1 with a Ronin RS2 and Raveneye HDMI transmission system and my current GX85 gimbal camera is terrible in this regard and also lacks decent AF capabilities like all Panasonic M43 cameras. If the OM-1 has low latency of 50-100 milliseconds and good eye tracking AF it will be a great option for gimbal work especially with it's small size and good battery life.

The price is not defined by the sensor size. It is about the specs for the genre it is for. I bet OM-1 is a better for wildlife, bird and outdoor adventure photography that those too. Both XT-4 and Z6II are great cameras no doubt about that, but for different purpose.

That is very helpful Peter and I enjoyed the video . It will be interesting to see if some of these new features are put in the 10 series at a later date . The reason I hope they do that is because I hope they retain the flip up/down screen as I have no interest in video . I hope that the new 10 series camera has not only the adaptability of the mkii , but also is given a limited high resolution capability for photographers who want a picture only camera . Whilst that wish list may be ambitious , we should be pressing the manufacturer to giving us more at this time , especially if they want to retain our interest and captivate new users to the system . @@ForsgardPeter Peter, I think the global crisis we are seeing unfold is going to hit camera manufactures like other industries and unless they have a product that is close to bring to market , we may not see another series 10 camera anytime soon. If I were OMDS then I would be looking developing two lines - the pen series and the OM series . Entry cameras would appeal to those wanting a light carry anywhere camera and for those wanting a mid range body I would bring the PenF back in a weather sealed body and with a tilting screen and leave the OM cameras with the swing out screen . If they did that then the Pen F could be a very nice photographers camera and something that pen users could aspire to if they did not want the bulk of an OM camera . I very much hope that global recession will not kill off the camera market and leave only pro cameras and an entry model , as that will very much limit us to using our phones much more . I have no crystal ball , but I suspect manufacturing in general is going to have a pretty tough time ahead and rationalisation may be the only way forward to survive .

There are a few benefits over the E-M5 MKIII. One is the speed, EVF, better IQ and better AF etc. How much it will improve your photography is hard to say. It is about what you like to photograph.

The bird recognition is awesome, my G9 failed terribly again last weekend. If you ever get the chance, I would be very interested in tele shoots through fences. I was in a wolf park this weekend and the G9's autofocus failed there as well, I had to use manual focus, which is a bit annoying with running wolves. :D

I'll 100% pick up the camera, but I also think it's not really a good value, especially here in Canada. After tax (in my province), this camera is over $3000. Staying in the M43 you have the higher megapixel (albeit slightly bigger) GH6 - also at the same wallet destroying price. But someone can also pick up a great Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji at much less. The full-frame Pan S5 here in Canada can be found easily, brand new, for $2000.

@@ForsgardPeter Yep, in Canada the GH6 and OM-1 are both $2799. In Ontario, tax is 13% so that's almost $3200. I'm a wedding photographer who uses two EM1-Mark 3's, and me making the switch to the OM-1, with the 5 or so extra batteries I would need, is about a $7000 investment after tax. Something like the Panasonic S5, which can be found in Canada for $2000 brand new, is a more tempting proposition. But to be honest, I'm perfectly happy with my EM1 Mark3. I don't think getting the OM-1 gets me more clients, and also don't think going full frame does either :)

Peter, do you know if OMDS has any plans to bring the new menu system to previous-generation models like the E-M1X? I’m still hoping that starry sky AF and dog/cat recognition will come to the E-M1X in maybe a future v3 firmware update (and dog/cat recognition to E-M1iii too), and it’d be great if the new, improved menu system also came to these previous-gen models. After all, Olympus is still selling them.

I agree about the menu system. It would be great if they did bring that to older cameras. specially to E-M1X and E-M1 MKIII. The subject recognition AI is only for E-M1X and OM-1 if I have understood correctly. E-M1 MKIII does not have the processing power.

My quick thinking came up with a work around. The Custom settings seems to save the video settings. You could assign a button to turn on a Custom setting and then you will have the desired settings for video. I need to check how the video recording is when the camera is on lest say M-mode.

Hello Peter, overall good , some things I am concern. For example, an external charging as the standard way, ... well any cable attached to the camera puts a lot of pressure on the tiny connector and the connection to the PCB during use and connecting also. In emergency it is valuable solution but for daily use I see it as a reliability issue. Charging battery external way is much better solution. As you said, 20 MPX sensor, well it is a step backwards specially for $2200 ?? So many FF cameras with higher MPX for much less will drive customers away. I think it is wrong to say "for me 20 mpx it is good enough", you will buy only one body , but Olympus needs many people to buy this camera and many don't feel the same way and are going elsewhere. Photographers are tired of the same 20 MPX, it limits detail resolution and to crop images. The HI-res mode is a joke and practically useless in my opinion, I tried that so many times and the yield of usable images is very low with questionable higher resolution.

They provide also a locking mechanism for the ports so it is a lot safer to charge. If you compare it to FF cameras with the same price range do they have the same specs? For the niche this is for there is not much competition at this price range. There alternatives to OM-1 has a lot higher price. Like I said in he video the 20Mpix might be a problem for some. Hires mode works quite well in many situations. OM-1 is so much faster than E-M1 MKIII for example. The possibilities to use it is much higher. Of course if one needs high megapixels all the time then something else than OM-1 might be a better choice. I have been a pro since 1989 and never has the thing been about film size of megapixels. It has about the image itself. But yes i know that sometimes there might be demand for really high megapixels.

I totally disagree with you statement, "...it is wrong to say 'for me 20 mpx it is good enough'..." I've been a professional photographer for over 30 years, and have sold a ton of photographic prints, including bridal portraits, etc. -- many captured with a 5 MP camera -- no problem. Bigger may be better, but it is not necessary -- just like having the fastest car made is not necessary when the fastest you need to drive it is 80MPH. The full frame cameras that offer the focusing abilities and speed of the OM-1 are all in the $6,000 price range -- and they do not offer many of the innovative functions that the OM-1 offers.

When you do quality prints at 300 DPI you will have the longer side of the image only about 17 inches, not enough for many galleries and my customers . Some customers like to see prints at 600 DPI. So the resolution is "handicap". 20 MPX is resolution of iPhones, and they cheaper then OM-1 On the end , you will see how many they will sell ...

@@libork8106 This will be my last reply to you. Again, I have dealt with professional photo labs for more than 30 years, and have never known a lab that printed anything higher than 300 DPI. The human eye cannot discern the resolution difference between an image at 300 DPI and 600 DPI. Most labs will actually down-res an image from 300 DPI if it is being used for a very large print. You obviously don't know what you are talking about.

OMD EM5 3. I like using Art and Scenes there not listed on the know for A, P, M know. I see C1, C2, can you decenite one of these to Art or Scenes. Yes I us A a lot.
