Excellent work, Matt. You gave a very easy to understand and follow tutorial on getting started with one of my favorite features with the cameras. Other camera manufacturers have tried to add similar features but I like the way it works in Olympus the best. For creatives there are many possible uses for this including intentional camera movement (ICM) to create many interesting effects in camera. The OM-1 is certainly looking to be a camera of the year contender.

Great video Matt - super informative. I got my OM-1 a few weeks back and have been out shooting waterfalls and seascapes with it and playing with the handheld and tripod hi-res modes. One thing I've noticed comparing the JPEG with the RAW high-res files is the need for much more sharpening with high-res images (a point you raise at the end of the video). I'm using Adobe LR but the optimal sharpening is much higher than the standard RAW 20MP file. So I've now created a new sharpening preset just for the high-res images!

Some very nice images there,, particularly the old truck. I have been considering OM's computational photo modes and the OM1 mkII may really have something with the graduated ND and updated fireware. I just did a bunch of 50mp shots in Utah's national parks and the 16 sec time was fine on my EM-1 mkIII.. haven't found the need to drop $2200 on another camera for 9 seconds occasionally. and my MKIII focuses better than my brother in law's OM-1... I'm holding out hope for a PEN F type body.

Great video! Three questions: * Why 25Mpx mode? Smaller result file? Faster... (uses fewer shots), or gives even better DR/lower noise? * If you set up saving RAW + JPG, and you have set up only saving to RAW on SD card, what happens? * Saving to SD cards... does the camera save to the two SD cards in parallel, or first to one and then to the other?

Thanks for the review. I’ve had some limited success with high res on my E-M1 iii, mostly in the desert where nothing is moving in the subject. One thing I found intriguing was using the hand held high res shot on a tripod - with a cable release. This allowed higher ISO and gave clean images in very low light, like for astro work. I’d be interested to hear if you decide to try this.
@MattSuessPhoto2 жыл бұрын
It can be used for some astro and I showed one example in the video. I'll have to put out another video on when/how one can use it on astro.

Thanks Matt. I at last know what the ORI file is! It seems obvious now, but I was thinking it was somehow processed from the hires ORF, although I'd noticed that if there was movement showing in the ORF then it wasn't present in the ORI. Now I know why that is. Also I've noticed HHHR works better than Tripod HR with a very long lens, because even a good solid tripod isn't quite steady enough in some situations, such as 150-400 x 1.25 x MC14 for 700mm pointed at the moon. But in that sort of situation a tripod is still very helpful in enabling the IS to get the best from HHHR.

Interesting video, thanks! I have a question: how long does it take the OM-1 to take 12 shots in handheld hi-res mode, assuming a high shutter speed like 1/1000 sec? I ask this because (1) this could reduce the motion artefacts and (2) I was wondering if the process of taking 12 shots is now faster than the E-M1 iii, because of the faster shutter readout. Unfortunately, I haven't yet been able to obtain an OM-1, so I cannot test this myself.
@TikTok-bl1rm2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the lesson, Matt. One quick question, if I may: For the Computation Hi-Res Mode (say, handheld), does the camera present the final result as one jpg + one RAW? Or one jpg + a series of RAWs?
@stevenmeisel42882 жыл бұрын
The resulting files are obviously going to be large. In your experience, how large is the file size with each of these modes? Also, would it be reasonable to assume that a 50 megapixel file from the OM-1 HHHR would give similar detail as, say the Sony A7Riv (61 megapixel)? Or is this apples and oranges?? Thanks!

Hi Matt. Thank you for the video. On the em1 mark iii I have noticed that tripod highres is very critical to even the smallest vibration. You have to use Topaz sharpen ai to get it Sharp. Is the om1 as sensitive to vibration as the em1? Best regards Lasse
@MattSuessPhoto2 жыл бұрын
The high res shots always seem a little soft, but they do love sharpening as I mentioned in the video. DxO Photolab does a great job on E-M1mkiii and E-M1X files and I'm sure it will do just as good with the OM-1 files when they get support for them. Otherwise using Topaz Sharpen AI can definitely be useful to help bring out all that detail.

I noticed you use quite a high f-stop number on a lot of the examples. Is high res mode less impacted by diffraction?
@MattSuessPhoto2 жыл бұрын
On some of the shots I needed the high f-stop to enhance the effect of the sunburst. If not photographing sunbursts I do prefer to have the f-stop around f8 or f11 to maximize depth of field. Going higher can soften the image slightly due to diffraction, and a program like Topaz Sharpen AI helps. A couple shots in the video I did mistakenly have the f-stop a little too high when not shooting sunbursts and yes, they were a touch soft due to diffraction but still completely usable especially when using Sharpen AI.

Can you use this Hi Res Feature with the Bracketing (focus Stacking)?
@MattSuessPhoto Жыл бұрын

@ValiRossi2 жыл бұрын
Hi-res mode was the main reason I got my EM1 Mkii. It can do off camera flash also, which Panasonic never got working. You can put a pocket wizard in the hot shoe and trigger strobes in Hi-Res mode. Also the dynamic range in Hi-res is outstanding. The Em1 Mkii in Hi-res is better than my Nikon D810 which is saying a lot. I bet this new OM-1 is stellar in Hi-res. Does it support off camera flash tho. Question, how many cameras can give you an 80 MP raw image with off camera flash right out of the camera? The new cameras from Sony and Panasonic and others can do pixel shift with even higher resolutions, but I think Oly is still the only one that can do off camera flash. What's the big deal with off camera flash? In many lighting conditions, it's important. Continuous can work for some conditions also.
@PritchardArts2 жыл бұрын
I have NOT been able to get my OM-1 to shoot with any of the high res settings with off-camera flash. I confirmed that the trigger and off-camera flash do work in other modes like P,M,A,S and TTL, just not in high res. I'm using the Flashpoint R2 Pro trigger and Godox flashes. The OM-1 actually triggers the flash unit for each of the 8 shots in the high res sequence, so that confirms that the camera communicates with the flash. But then it fails to composite the high res image. It doesn't even save a normal res jpeg. I use my EM1m2 to shoot high res in M and A modes, and with the flash set to either manual or TTL. It's surprising that the much more powerful OM-1 can't do it. I love the other features and capabilities of this camera but I have to say that the failure to combine high res with off camera flash is a huge disappointment for me. Perhaps many photographers wouldn't find this to be a big deal, but I sure do. I've been working with OM System tech support for a week trying to figure this out. No success so far. I hope they fix this in a firmware update.
@ValiRossi2 жыл бұрын
@@PritchardArts The EM1 MkII didn't work in Hi Res with off camera flash when it was first released. It was only after a firmware update that it finally worked.
@PritchardArts2 жыл бұрын
@@ValiRossi I got a final answer from OM System tech support saying that they do not believe the issue lies with the camera. I don't think I agree, but I'm keeping an open mind that it could be the trigger or flash. Given that off camera flash works in every other mode, including Live Comp, and on-camera in HR mode, I still suspect that this has something to do with the calculations the camera performs to generate the composited image. I'll investigate further. I did find a cumbersome workaround (also posted on DP Review Forum on the Micro 4/3 board). I can use off-camera flash in high res mode if I hardwire the flash to the camera's sync port. This only works if the camera and flash are in manual mode, but at least it gets the flash off the camera.
@ValiRossi2 жыл бұрын
@@PritchardArts Maybe you could set the off camera flash to optically trigger and use the on camera flash to trigger it. Let us know what you find out. I'm interested. Thanks for the info.

@@thegroove2000 I use Gigapixel too - even on these high res shots! However, you get better results first using either handheld high res or tripod high res mode in the camera to produce a larger file.
