This video stood out as one of the better videos describing the OM1 camera's capabilities. There are many videos on the OM1 but few that take the camera into the field and process the images as you did. Although the material discussed is similar to other videos, the presentation made here presents the camera capabilities in a more convincing way. I own the Em5 Mark III and take many landscape pictures as I travel. If you enjoy autumn pictures you need to visit New England someday. Thanks

The OM-D E-M5III is an excellent travel camera, a very compact powerhouse. The in-camera processing options should be very similar to the OM-1, so this workflow should work with your setup as well! You can actually do a lot of this on the EM5 Mark iii. I've also used it on the EM10 Mark ii. This camera series is so much like a best kept secret. So even the entry level OMDs have some post processing in camera to a useful level.

Thomas, you do a great job representing the OM System OM-1 capabilities. Your content inspired me to return to using my "old" EM-1 Mk. III. I used the 7-14 pro, the ND filter, and handheld some beach/surf compositions that have become my favorites. I processed the images using Topaz Photo AI. I wish OM System would add a 2.7:1 aspect ratio as such a crop looks quite useful after processing in Topaz Photo AI. Again, inspired by your videos I purchased the latest OM-1 to become my adventure camera while my Sonys remain jealous at home. In my opinion, Topaz Photo AI promotes the final image to a quality that is useful for nearly all prints most of us mount on walls. Cheers, Jim

Really enjoyed & motivated by this. Been a photography enthusiast for many years. Was diehard Nikon DSLR ( D750) fan for a long time till I experimented with Olympus…..and haven’t looked back since. Have the EM1 ( silver edition ), EM1 Mk2 ( love it), EM 10mk2 ( Tiny ) and recently purchased EM1X ( new favorite ?). In all my years of digital photography, my biggest issue is post processing ( or rather lack thereof 😬😬). This video inspires me to start some raw edits on my EM1X ( better screen & processing power ) ! Thank you !

What I have done for a long time now with mft is shoot raw+jpeg but set up the camera to shoot for the jpeg. This will involve the WB, Picture Mode (which are customisable), compensation (on the fly), gain curve (highlight-shadow), metering mode, etc etc. These will affect the gain, which affects the exposure solution, which affects the raw exposure. I often feel that if you rely on raw editing to fix the photo, you are losing out on the full potential of these sophisticated cameras to take photographs in their own right.

Agreed - one can also easily mess up a RAW image beyond salvation when shooting with the "fix it in post" mindset! I'm a huge advocate of working as you've described - I think I'll follow up with a video describing this workflow at some point. Especially when shooting for a client, it is a great time saver to get it right on set - on set, the client sees you working, if you spend hours in front of the PC afterwards, it is pretty much your own time. Unfortunately, I have not used this lens personally. However, I've heard only good things about it. If it is the right focal length, I would not worry about image quality or AF performance. All lenses with the PRO designation are excellent. Switching is always a big decision, but if you are a wildlife photographer looking a light weight setup, well. Then you won't be disappointed by the OM-1. I assume you work with DSLRs at the moment?

I'd never considered using the camera for editing. I have an E-M5 mkIII. I'd previously been importing the RAW files to my phone for editing in Photoshop Express, but have been unhappy with the way it handles ISO noise compared to the native JPGs from camera. This seems like the perfect way to get the highlight & shadow adjustments (and occasional art filters) that I use in Photoshop Express combined with the camera's excellent noise reduction and jpg engine. I'm going to pay attention to the Art filters a little more now, too. I'd totally forgotten about the Art Bracket mode - and had no idea that I could apply them in camera after the fact (I thought I had to take them into OM Workspace for that). So thanks again for yet another useful and insightful video!

Interesting video and very nice pictures, Thomas! I've been doing landscape for decades, mostly on slide film. Hence a really good viewfinder is essential to me, and to slow down, and compose thoroughly is important. But seeing other ways of doing it, can only broaden our horizon. Otherwise I would swap the burger for tafelspitz mit apfelkren und schnittlauchsauce.

Shooting slide film teaches you a lot - and actually I tried to get the framing right just as I would with slide film, as cropping in camera can be a hassle and you'll always loose quality, of course. The workflow reminded me a lot of shooting film, I was very focused knowing that I cannot get to the computer to edit the images. Regarding the burger, I actually planned on getting something typical but unfortunately, it was a hipster cafe, only burgers... So shame on me haha Thanks for your very nice comment!

Here I am, stressing because I have no PC or Mac for editing RAW files. Turns out I could have done it on the camera itself, all this time! I am _kicking_ myself. How useful would it be to have an external monitor, or can it even be done through the OM Share app on a tablet? (As opposed to the non-mobile OM Workspace software) I think the larger screen might help with tweaking things just right. Although a new computer for Workspace, Affinity, DXO etc. is still on my roadmap...

Hey Kevin! 1) In this case, I've tested it myself. You can also look up the values for your lens on opticallimits.com 2) I've just selected the WB option in the super control panel. When post processing in camera, there is a dedicated menu point for setting the WB 3) Yes, there is a little green box where the camera actually focused. Hope I was able to help you out! I do this a lot when we take bus tours somewhere. I can usually get my favorites picked and lightly edited before we get back to the hotel. I can go even further by uploading those few to my phone and sharing them while on the bus. That leaves me free to concentrate on those delicious items, such as the ones you had before you at the cafe. Also, for me, it’s much easier to make the selections and edits using the View finder rather than the screen.

Thanks for sharing that Larry! It is a totally viable workflow - and the fact that you can make selections via the VF is also quite important for me. That is a limiting factor when working with my DSLRs. Back screens are harder to see and more prone to color shifts etc. due to the impact of ambient lighting. I'm glad that the OM-1 has such a good VF!

This video is a good reminder for me that SOOC JPEGs, whether extracted from the camera at the moment of the shot or using the in-camera RAW converter, can give lovely results worth sharing. I'd be a bit hesitant to say the same for trying to make something portfolio-worthy, but maybe I'm overthinking when a shot is portfolio-worthy or not. Good video, and I'm surprised by the star rating feature of the OM-1. Seems like it makes sorting the wheat from the chaff a whole lot easier by subselecting the best ones.

I hear you - I'm also still struggling to accept that SOOC can be so good that these files can go straight to the PF. I try to imagine the files as like slide film, that helps me overcome my "no edit" anxieties. I also came to realize that actually I processed the files in camera by adjusting the exposure, so it was pretty similar to what I actually would do in OM Workspace - only difference: I was having a burger and chatting with the bartender in the meantime. Also, I made use of my time on the bus by sorting through the images. The star rating feature can be combined with the checkbox feature and the lock image feature - combining all of those can really help making a selection quick and easy. Wow, I've done RAW editing in camera a couple of years ago, but I didn't know there are so many options now in the OM-1. If I need to edit and share photos with a computer I transfer the RAW file to my smartphone and I do all the edit and sharing there.

Hello from Florida. I’m a tablet based workflow so I stay away from very high mp cameras. I hate carrying a traditional laptop computer, but for many options like noise reduction software, a current MBP or similar is necessary. I thought my e-m1.2 would be the last Olympus camera I’d buy after migrating to Nikon Z, but right now my finger is hovering over the buy button on this om-1. You’re not making this easy 😁

Thank you very much for sharing that - I'm convinced that even today, excessive amounts of resolution are actually more harm than good, and your tablet workflow or any other workflow on older machines are just impractical with 60MP files. Regarding the OM-1 I went from Olympus E-M1II to Nikon F and Z, now with the OM-1, I'm just super happy. Last time I was this "wow-ed" by a camera was when I upgraded from the OM-D M5 to the M1II. The OM-1 is really a fantastic camera, so if your finger somehow ends up clicking the check out button, I'm quite sure you won't regret it. Thank you very much for your comment, Jeffrey!

@@ThomasEisl.Photography I actually went into several romances with many different camera brands and in the end, always came back to Olympus. After having a Nikon Z setup which pushed me towards investing so much money into lenses and losing on the sale. I now decided to follow the Less & Light approach. I own an E-m5 mark III body with simple 12-40/2.8, 25/1.8, 45/1.8 and the future buy 100-400. This is all that I need and more of these lenses fit into a small camera bag. What I find amusing about Olympus is that when setting an ART option (like grainy film II) - the screen and the EVF go into black and white. This is a very great feature that I really love and haven't found on other camera brands (except Fuji). In addition to the workflow approach, I find it useful that doing pictures in ART modes creates a SOOC picture and a RAW image for further improvement. Thanks to Olympus I really like taking pictures, again.

Editing in camera for social media when image quality does not matter is maybe useful for inexperienced operators. I'd rather use an I Phone for that kind of photography. For higher quality photo results I'd spend time on post processing. I find it creative and calming and sometimes challenging. Your milage may vary.

Hello Ivan! Thank you for asking - from what I have tested and from what OM System told me, the files from OM Workspace and in-camera should be identical if you apply the exact same settings. It might be that you accidently changed the sharpness or contrast setting in camera. Also, the resolution setting might be the culprit.

Is OM-1 really €600 more worth than an E-M1 III? Except for the BSI sensor I cannot find any compelling reason to pay €600 more. What am I missing?

It depends on your needs and budget, but what makes the OM-1 so special: 1) AF Performance - the new AF system is really impressive, you have to experience it. If you are shooting under very demanding conditions, and I mean conditions under which even the best cameras fail from time to time, then you have to pick the OM-1. 2) Computing Power - the OM-1 is faster than any camera I've ever used, there is no delay whatsoever. It is really smooth and the computing power is utilized to perform many things just way better than all other M43 cameras, e.g. highres, OVF simulation, ProCapture and much more. 3) Imaging pipeline - I still don't know what it is exactly, but the combination of sensor, adc and image processor allows the OM-1 to really deliver - is it significantly better than the E-M1III? I don't know as I only had the E-M1II (which it outperforms). Again, seeing is believing, it is impressive. 4) Control Layout / Handling - I really like the ergonomics, probably my favorite camera in that regard. Perfect E-1 / E-M1X hybrid. Without doubt, the OM-1 is the best M43 stills camera currently available - is it worth the extra money or worth upgrading? This really depends on your needs and workflow. I'll talk about the OM-1 again in future videos, especially its capabilities in terms of AF and High ISO performance - so if you consider upgrading or getting one, those might help!
