I'm sure the people reading crap on the internet that say they're gonna get 200hp and 300 ft/lbs care. Like I stated, only reason for me to do this test was to know.. From owning and driving one, I knew it wasn't 200, but without data I got nothing.

I truly love this build. It’s a freaking prototype and purpose built. The lack of low end power would piss me off too. Looking forward to seeing how you fix it.

I built an OM617 pump/injectors and turbo for a boat many many moons ago. I know its marine but the owner needed the low down boost to get the boat out of the hole quickly similar to how you want for your Toymota. It used 7.5mm elements, DNOSD193 nozzles and I fitted a KKK K26 turbo making 19psi. On the engine dyno it made 168hp at 4600rpm. Turbo was non wastegated as not needed in a boat. Biggest thing I found was getting correct fuel supply to the injector pump from the lift pump/supply and plumbing the injector return straight back to the tank.

Yeah, any tinkering I do personally will be centered around improving the off idle power, I appreciate the insights!
@matui6983

Thats why I chose the K26 turbo. Its originally off a 3.4 litre 6 cylinder engine compared to 3.0 litre 5cyl like you have with OM617 and has a small entry port in exhaust housing. Boost came on at 1200rpm. Did try some other turbos but the K26 started boosting the earliest by far.

Did you have the ALDA on your 7.5 pump? I haven't messed with mine since it's supposedly calibrated to perfection by Dieselmeken, but I feel like I should now since it's such a turd to 1800 rpm lol.

No. Never fitted one to the pump. There are smilar Japenese engine pumps fiited with a proper Aneroid like B-series Cummins etc use that we could have fitted. It did make the engine a bit dirty in the exhaust while manouvering but thats all. One puff of black (small) when throttle slammed open and she was off n grunting.

Hey JR. i dont always comment because mostly i watch youtube in the TV. You have become quiet the OM617 scientist. The lack of low end on my engine was really helped with a cold air intake. Getting that air from outside is super invigorating. My build is something i love. It sucks ur not happy with that awesome build. I like the lower power in the woods. Idle the trails mostly with slow low spin acc. On the roads. I drive it like a kennworth loaded up and its performa great. Driving truck for a living makes the way i drive this more natural. Its a high RPM diesel for sure. My low gears also help. Love ur content
@TheDrivewayEngineer
@TheDrivewayEngineer 2 жыл бұрын
What gear ratio do you have? Mine is 4.30, I just left a trail and was unable to do the hills and stuff without low range. I drive my truck through the same trail in 2wd high. I love the truck, but it's dead as a doornail below 1800, which shows on the graphs. A combination of gearing down and smaller turbo will likely fix the problem though

@@TheDrivewayEngineerIm using the factory 4.10 gears. Its a big help. But at 65mph im about taced out. Getting me around 22mpg also likely from gearing. Cold air induction was the biggest step up in performance for me in that low end and high. But most of my trial rides is crawlin. I find the engine ideal for my style. I bet you can find happy medium in adjusting the way you drive. On faster more open trails. Im in low range. Sometimes in 3rd and 4th gear.

I was just watching a video of a brit that made 435 hp out of an OM605 (5/6 of an OM606) on a chassis dyno in a series 1 Range Rover. I assume the RPM was high but it didn't sound too crazy, boost was high. It was intercooled I believe, mechanical fuel pump, 8.5mm injectors I think. I want 200+ hp for my WJ so it's not "slower" than the stock 4.0. An OM605 would obviously fit better than an OM606 so if I can get low end torque suitable for 35" tires with a reasonable gear ratio (maybe with 1 ton axles) for "rock crawling", I'll have an Overlander that I probably won't have to worry about getting stuck because I won't be intentionally rock crawling it... I hope that's a reasonable goal with a useable torque curve. I just have to find the right engine to build up.

There's an Izusu series of straight 6 engines that would be real close, I see them in yards in NPR trucks occasionally

@@TheDrivewayEngineer I'll have to look in to those trucks to see what kind of transmission options are available. I kind of want to stick with automatic so I don't have to cobble a clutch pedal setup and have smooth power delivery to avoid breaking stuff.

It seems that (as you point out) a rear gear change "shorter" (although 4X4 gets expensive) would greatly improve your slow speed driving experience. I thank you for giving me a potential location to take my Camaro LS project to, and do a chassis dyno eventually, to see what I am putting out, Harrison is not a bad drive from here in TC. This has to be fun when it is your car at the actual dyno run(s).

Yeah, I'm unhappy with the low end of this engine. It cruises around the lake great, it's nice to drive on 2 lane roads, etc... Even with the 50lb flywheel though, the off idle is almost identical to the 22RE

might be regretting my choice of engines now. i have the 221 7cm. but i also have #265 firad nozzles so im wondering how they make a difference. also, do you have an intercooler? mine will. through the hood top mounted cooler. im cutting a hole in the hood like a toyota. whats your injection pressure? 1850 is stock for a turbo but ive heard of people tuning them to 2000psi. joe said this combo would get 228/300. im wondering what he did to make that power.
@TheDrivewayEngineer
@TheDrivewayEngineer 2 жыл бұрын
He never made that power lol. Because he never dynod anything, how would he know? A bunch of minor tweaks to a fixed amount of fuel isn't going to add up to another doubling of power. Which is the only reason I took the time to dyno it, because I drive mine every day, and that 200/300 number is definitely bullshit.

@@TheRowdyJ hindsight being 20/20... But the Dieselmeken pump is 30% larger than stock, and this engine makes 30% more power than stock... I mean, that makes sense to me. From the graphs you can see how flat the power is, and it wasn't smoking, it was simply out of fuel. It made the same power at 2500 rpm as 4500, revving it did nothing, and I don't want to rev it anyway personally. The He221 is the wrong turbo for it, and I don't see getting significantly more out of the Dieselmeken pump than I have. You can run more timing, that'll bring the power in lower, but it starts hard any further than I have it. More boost? The wastegate is maxed out now, that 29psi is it. EGTs touched 1400 without an intercooler, adding one isn't going to add power, just would allow more fuel, which I don't have to give. Idk what else to say though, that's why the video is complete and uncut, it's all there for folks to see

@@TheDrivewayEngineer well one thing i found in my studies of these is he tunes the pumps for 90cc and they can be turned up a lot more with 7.5mm elements. im going to ask for 120cc. he might have used an engine dyno where you used a chassis dyno. that could account for 15-20% or so. we will see what he says in the email. maybe the intercooler will help me on the hiway..
