Was 21 lived in Santa Cruz when “Bring on the Night” came out. Rode the mid-night bus downtown to “The Movie 1-2-3”. As the chanting got stronger Sting must have wondered what was going on behind him as Omar started to dig in. This was long before internet or personal technology. I went three days in a row to see this very song again. I walked 40 min. home at 2am. This clip brings back great memories of that time of life. BRAVO Sting, Omar, Branford, Kenny, Darryl, Dolette and Janice!

That is the most amazing drum solo. Most unbelievable part of it. Omar is playing spotless 8th notes with his hi hat foot through most of it. Still blows my mind when I hear it. Did two shows with him about two years earlier when he was with Weather Report. WIthout Question the best live drummer I ever saw.

The pattern he starts at 3.46 not only sounds powerful, intense and musical but also has a choreographed symmetry in the sticking that makes it visually stunning. The way each cymbal on his left rocks back and forth looks so cool! They are being thrashed so hard on those accents, distributing them between the China, Splash and Crash gives each cymbal time to recover and return to it's neutral position.

This is why KZbin is so great. Been looking for this for some 18 years, and bam, here it is. This performance always gave me chills as a teen, and hearing it again does the exact same. The Police version is good as well, but this is one of the rare Sting "re-do's" that's actually better. His solo version of Roxanne on this film was also breathtaking.

I was a drummer earning money from age 12 in 1964 and I retired from the profession in 1990. I grew up with Moon and Ringo, I saw Joe Morello live, I saw Ella and Count Basie live. I loved the greats, and held Buddy Rich above them all. Then I saw this live in Edinburgh and I swear that during this solo Omar actually STOOD up on his pedals like a dancer. Never bettered!

Yessir Stewart Nicol thank you for being apart of the history lesson inside of this moment. Buddy Rich is, was and likely will be the standard. Then there is this performance by Omar Hakim that set him apart. He ripped it so hard that even the late great Kenny Kirkland can be seen laughing as he absolutely dances across every part of that drum set in a crescendo of excellence. Firing off in rapid succession. May that drum set' Rest In Peace' because he absolutely destroyed it.

The very first time I saw the video for this song back in 1986, I fell in love with this song. It's very well written, and the drum solo is 100% stellar. Omar Hakim definitely has the skills. 80's music was the best, and I was a freshman in high school with this song came out. LONG LIVE THE 80's!!!!!!!

I love Weckl, Royster, Dennis,Vinnie,Chris Chambers,Gadd and Harvey Mason but Omar kills it. Tasty,flashy not overplayed,physical and well arranged. The way he started softly, picked up speed and power in the middle and then unleashed it all in the end. Omar laid out the blueprint for drum soloing. Sting is one of my all-time favorite musicians. But to play a drum solo that fit a Sting project so perfectly is off the charts.
@KONAMAN100
@KONAMAN100 3 жыл бұрын
But it's not a solo, it's part of the song but it's so powerful in context of the song and such a spectacle the way he did it. Those other drummers you mentioned, I guess would have done something incredible too, the Sting song would have brought out 150% from them too. But it's Omar's chair this tour.

Totally agree...this Video was part of the opening Montage to Video Soul with Donnie Simpson, in its infancy. I saw this gig when I was at Uni, I guess 1982 or 1983 at the NEC. Just outstanding and what a drum play here, Omar 'on fire burning' for this performance. I'd say one of the best play outs ever, for any song. The guy has such groove feel and just let's fly in a way so great to watch as well as hear. The haunting sax, I remember it like it was yesterday it cuts right thru you. Ice cold goosebumps right down my back n arms. Wow. Replayed 5 mins later. Same goosebumps. Really. This, is why drums is the king of performance instruments.

I come back to this solo over and over again....it's incomprehensibly soul affirming. Joyful. I despise drum solos usually. But genius changes the world and changes us along with it. I find I laugh with joy every time I come back to this performance. What's so amazing is that you can hear Hakim's solo starting behind the lovely Marshalis solo. Culminating in a crescendo to wake the gods. I love this so much it's hard to express.

Brandford Marsalis sax, Kenny Kirkland piano R.I.P., Darryl Jones bass, Omar Hakim drum, everyone of these musicians is or was giants on their own.
