INFO: Omar Rodriguez Lopez is most famous for being the leader and guitarist of the El Paso bands At The Drive-in and The Mars Volta. He’s been a part of countless other musical efforts as well though, such as the bands Antemasque, Bosnian Rainbows and De Facto as well as his own solo projects. Omar is probably one of the most prolific people in music and art these days as he’s currently released 52 solo albums in addition to his features and band projects, and if that wasn’t enough he’s got a few films under his belt as he’s a film producer too. As you can understand we won’t even come close to understanding what he’s contributed to the art world in a single video, so in this one i’ll mainly focus on three things. His early life, his most acclaimed music and finally some of his music that I think is underrated.

I'd be kind of interested in looking at the other side of stuff some with Sparta talk. I remember being so bummed ATDI broke up but then Sparta and TMV released their first albums pretty close and it completely blew my mind that they were so different from each other and both so good. I don't remember how much you covered it when speaking on Deloused, but how Flea ended up playing bass on that album would be interesting if there was a bit of a story to it. I honestly have no idea if it was just a phone call or getting hooked up through an agent or something. Also I think Cedric and Omar used some of the unused Flea tracks for the Antemasque album they put out a few years ago. That was something I read on a random blog though, so I dunno that they confirmed they were leftover tracks from Deloused recordings.

Palpitations form a limit is a song I've been in love with since I heard it. It and 'concertina' from the Tremulent EP both sound like proto-volta songs that don't quite fit what mars volta would later be. But my god...both of those songs are amazing in their own right. Moody and atmospheric and seemingly plucked from the ether considering it was the missing link between a dub group to a well...whatever you feel pleased calling mars volta.

Omar RL is a Musical GENIUS, I've been listening to his music since his first records with ATDI and TMV, then I shifted to his solo musical records and that is when I realized I will forever love his music. I have listened and analyzed most of his musical material, he is my major influence to my side as musician. It is clear that someone with his experimental side some of his records might not be as "good" as others however that does not disregard his musical talent and relentless creativity.

@@LieLikesMusic there's also the album 'Woman Gives Birth to Tomato!' a highly improvised and atonal full composition wich Is parted under the names of the cities he has lived in. There's Bayamón, Ámsterdam, Tokyo and some other late ones too!

like Melvins, this dude dearly needs an editor. There is good stuff in there, but clearly the vast majority of it is not thought through and not filtered through any sort of critical lens before it's unreflexively pushed out there.

For me a fair comparison is Omar and Frank Zappa. And i know Zappa is Zappa but Omar is also a prolific and good musician.

@@LieLikesMusic Please do take Solar Gambling on a second run, but I totally respect that, we all connect to music differently. I just never heard anything like it. Xenophanes is a psychedelic prog-rock album about 2 kindred spirits who keep meeting each other in several different life times. Also, its music and lyrics are very connected to his movie "The Sentimental Engine Slayer". I highly recommend listening to that album and also watching the movie. I truly admire Omar and been a fan of his work for a while and your video was very accurate and well done. Congratulations!

As a youth, his uncles, who were musicians themselves, put him on percussion to learn rhythm, then moved him to bass to learn scales, after that he was able to play the guitar to its full potential.

I love The Mars Volta, At the Drive-in, Antemasque, DeFacto, and Bosnian Rainbows (and Le Butcherettes, which he is somewhat involved with to a lesser extent, he at least plays with them live sometimes)... And i've seen all of them live except (believe it or not) The Mars Volta (one of my greatest shames)... But I have never been able to crack in to his solo albums. Can anyone recommend anything? The few times i've tried it just doesn't live up to everything else up on offer by his other projects

They sent out 200 signed posters for the first 200 people to buy the last CD they made, and i got it ♥_♥ Most of the posters got sold in ebay, but i only opened mine 2 times and its still in its poster pack. not gonna unpack it until i have a house to put it in forever. Mars Volta was my Favorite of all favorite bands and nothing could reach them, and Omar Rodriguez just kept it going :D Fun Fact, Omars Signing is horrible xD while Cedrics is incredible. Not that it bothers me. I agree with Omar Music Is Therapy , if u put music on the ears of a person that is working, if he likes the music he/she will work 2 times faster .
