Most people in third world countries for example like Morocco we speak amazigh, Arabic, French, Spanish and English. French and Spanish because Morocco was colonized by France and Spain. English because it's the most spoken language in the world Arabic because it's the first language in Morocco and amazigh because it's our mother tongue ( anyway we only use dialects of amazigh language).

For those surprised by how advanced, almost native, his French is, back in the 1940s and during the time of the Egyptian monarchy prior to 1952, Egyptian aristocracy spoke French all the time, and at a very highly advanced level. They spoke French not only in school but also at home. In Omar’s case, although Arabic is his mother tongue, he tended to speak French with his parents in order for servants not to understand what they were saying. English came along a few years later, when his mother decided to send him to Victoria college, a top British school in Alexandria, Egypt. This explains why, although almost a native English speaker, he always felt way more comfortable conversing in French or Arabic.

I am from Bangalore, South India. It is very common here that one speaks 4- 5 languages. But except English all others that we speak are Indian languages. To speak five international languages, all of them fluently is awesome and one must be very brainy. I once worked with a Swiss colleague who spoke seven international languages, all of them fluently is enough to conduct seminars..that was quite rare. I loved watching Omar Sharief play the role of Colorado in McKenna’s Gold, which happens to be one of my all time favourite western movie. Sharief is simply unforgettable in that role.

Mr Sharif was a very interesting man. Far more interesting than many of his contemporaries who were mostly know for being drunks or womanizers. I have yet to see O’toole or Harris or Burton have a conversation about Politics or Philosophy. My grandfather, a Sephardic Jew born in Alexandria in the late 20’s, spoke almost 7 languages fluently: Arabic, Hebrew, French, English, Spanish, Ladino, and Italian, as well as some Greek; being most proficient in the first 5 mentioned. Egyptians who grew up during the same time period as Sharif had extensive exposure to different cultures, as Egypt was one of the largest centers of trade in the world and in fair proximity to Europe, Africa, and the rest of the Middle East and Asia.
