I own both the 85mm 1.8 and the 85mm 1.4 G-MASTER and trust me the cheaper one is not sharper who ever said that has no clue. Some say the new Sigma 85mm 1.4 is better than the SONY G-MASTER but I had it for one day and I doubt also that. For me the 85mmm SONY G-MASTER is the best lens I ever owned and yes the motor is loud especially in close distance but I don't have a issue with that as I'm a photographer and not a film maker!

But but, it dosnt fit on my X-T 2 :( I bought the 12mm, 56mm, 18-55mm, 10-24mm and the X-T 2 because of you and now this one but it doesnt fit

Can you adjust the settings so that when you take photos lets say in Paris with the Eiffel tower in the background so that it isn't blurred away? Or does that defeat the purpose of this style lens all together and you are better off getting this for portrait up close shots and something else to make an entire scene shot?

Love the vid! I have the 85mm 1.4 but can't seem to get a sharp image 😅 what shutter speed do you gauge as your minimum lowest? I feel like my images always have motion blur on them

I would guess this is from slow focusing, not from motion blur

Omar, make sure to read this, because I can already see in many of the sample photos: - When you go with the shutter speed of 1/4000 or 1/8000 and you use electronic front courtain shutter (efcs ON - something like that in the menu), your bokeh will be distorted and form weird circles. In specific cases it will be cut in half. All in all, the bokeh quality will hugely degrade. To get the best out of the lens in bright sunlight, you need to switch to full mechanical shutter. There is not much video about this topic, but Manny luckily did a video about it:. Search for: "Why you SHOULDN'T use the ELECTRONIC SHUTTER for PORTRAITS! " At 1/4000 it's already severe and at 1/8000 it's truly bad.

Thanks! Yes I saw that video! 😊 I only shoot in full mechanical. Football and almond bokeh balls show up at the edges of photos on most lenses. Thanks for passing this along!

efcs only works when using a mechanical shutter , there is no reason not to use the electronic shutter for portraits ( maybe less bitrate in raws,?).

soo... as a sony/fuji/canon pro shooter i can say one thing - this lens is great. BUT! yea the but but is here. There is something called samyang/rokinon 85 F1.4 AF FE.. and! Its 1/3 of the price of that beast, and its simply performes on very but very close lvl. In terms of sharpness and image quality. It renders a bit more warm colors but still, for this price? I suggest to have a closer look for that particular one.

What distance would you say you were from the subjects? I'm having trouble with framing with this lens.

Did you upgrade your firmware ? You can use eye autofocus automatically when focusing, then no need to use a button for that. Works really well.

Sure did. But I found I didn't like eye AF ready and on all the time. Turned it off and went back to the button when I need.

Thanks for another great video, Omar! I always thought that Canon 85 f1.2 L is iconic and legendary and "must have" for a portrait shooter. A local photographer I know has an A7II with this lens. I'm fairly certain it's a monogamous relationship and he doesn't own another lens. It's been this way for years. All his leisure shots and paid work are executed with this lens and this lens only. Now, the question I'm sure everyone here has on their minds: How does this compare to the 56 f/1.2?

But EF 85 1.8 has almost same shallow dof with 1.4. Those DSLR lenses I don't know somehow have shallower dof compared to same f and FL mirrorless lenses
