The beautiful thing about Star Control's writing it even the idiots are fun, likeable characters. These guys nearly destroyed the galaxy with their shoddy DIY IT job, but it's hard to hate them for it. They're just so darn innocent.

The voice reminds me of the the big purple Mooninite from Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The crystalline creatures themselves remind me of that episode of Star Trek: TNG where a growing crystal thing is feeding off light and draining the power of the Enterprise...except not at all hostile.

When just simple research drone's replication is better in fight that war ships battle program of half of a galaxy.

Bear in mind that it's a Melnorme drone. the Melnorme are older than the Ur-Quan and are the descendents of the Mael-Nurm who said The Words to the Ur-Quan -- the only other survivors of the Millieu if we assume the Taalo are actually dead (which the Orz seems to feel differently about). The Melnorme are about half a step less enigmatically advanced than the Arilou'laleelay. Their technology has also been refined by millennia of secrecy. Their kit is very good, literally the best that money can buy.
