A Relative Value
Vintage Omegas can be found at relatively good prices. Just be careful from whom you buy.

I have a 1964 Seamaster De Ville, very similar but with date function. It is also in a similar original condition to this one, including the hands no longer being luminescent but the hour markers on the dial somewhat surprisingly still retaining a very faint luminescence. It runs very well and is a very pretty dress watch.

I have two of these now....for free! (To be fair, I inherited them). One I believe is in white gold, the other yellow. However, they both need servicing....which I haven’t had done yet! And why you might ask? My original Submariner cost $900 to have it serviced, and now that I’m retired, I’ve been hesitant to spend that “times two”. But watching this video, maybe I won’t have to. Thank you, sir, for both an educational AND relaxing video!

Thx for watching GM. A follow the adage, if the watch is working fine, no need to service. But when it starts to do weird things, lose time, gain time, stop, make noises ;) etc., it's time for a service. You are on of those lucky people who bought your sub when Rolex wasn't a "luxury" watch. Good for you!

This is a beautifully simple-design watch. I have two...one gold filled and one in white gold. I found one for free.....in a costume jewelry box destined for Goodwill....and it works (except it is very hard to wind, And I have to gently shake it to start it). The other my wife found going through drawers and boxes prior to having an estate sale....it is not working. I spent almost $900 having my Submariner serviced by Rolex, and now retired, what can I expect to pay to have these two watches serviced (it sounded like your watchmaker was an acquaintance)? You gave excellent advice....on buying a vintage “anything mechanical”. A number of years ago, I purchased an older Porsche. To find the right one, I had Pre-purchase Inspections completed (at $150-300 each) prior to making an offer. I went through three cars before finding the right one, which I still own today. I’m retired now, with less “disposable” income; can I assume that I could have a similar kind of “inspection” done on my two Omegas (at what cost?) prior to committing repair and servicing). And if not, perhaps EBay them, and ask what?
@artl52

G M - vintage watches can be a mine field or a gold mine. You are wise to do the pre-inspection, especially on something valuable. As far as service costs, it would vary. You could pay maybe $400 for a standard service from someone like Federico, or find a local watchmaker who would do it for less.

@@artl52 thank you so much for replying.....I very much appreciate that! $400 is so much better than what I paid to have my Rolex Sub serviced!

If you send to an Omega service center, it will start at $550. A local jeweler that has been trained in Omega repair could do it for less than that.
@captaincoyote1792

@@Oridyben Thank you for that advice. I’ve got to “get my ‘six’ moving”, and look into it. Seems a shame that they still sit, simply gathering dust, when someone somewhere could be wearing and enjoying them. Take car…and thank you, again.

Is this the 18k solid gold version? I am looking to purchase one but I am a novice. It seems like the going price right now on a similar watch in 18k solid is around 1500 ish. I just wanted to make sure I was comparing apples to apples. Thanks for taking the time to make the video.

I've recently stumbled across an old / vintage Omega Seamaster. The jeweler that I took it to doesn't know a whole lot about Omega watches. If I sent you a picture of the watch, would you be able to give me any kind of information / value on it? I can't seem to find a serial #, but I thought that I read an article that stated the number could be inside the watch.

Truth be known that I have so many watches, that now I no longer appreciated them, as they only told the time, where it’s £10 or £600 watch.

I bought a vintage Seamaster DeVille a few years back, and feel lucky to have gotten what appears to be a genuine watch in quite good condition; it came with a pristine new crystal, which had a tiny ''omega' symbol molded inside above the dial center. It was acrylic, as per original, but zero blemishes or scratches, although the dial was lacking some of the luminous hour spots and the hands barely show in the dark, and some small wear areas appear around the dial perimeter. It is flatter and a bit more 'modern/sleek' than his Seamaster, but either seem quite contemporary and ageless, versus modern gauche instruments of gaudy peacocking and broadcasting one's status. Collecting without maintaining, servicing, or wearing seems especially anal and peculiar. These models obviously deserve care and are appropriate for dress occasions only, but more rugged styles really should be worn to dive, trim a tree, change a tire, etc. and if one can't bear to risk the instrument in everyday use, it is not a watch but a certificate of pomposity.

well said, z1522. I agree, if you are not going to wear your watches, what's the point in collecting. And particular watches should be worn appropriately. I am not going to wear a vintage Seamaster or vintage Stowa while cutting the lawn, just as I would not wear a Seiko Diver to a dress occasion. Thanks for watching.
