It's really dark at the bottom of the ocean. Putting the watch on the outside allows the fish to finally see the time of day.

Actually your sauce jar would’ve exploded spectacularly, and at FAR less depth than the watch experienced, but hey, maybe you’re right. Maybe grocery store-bought glass is stronger than 11,000m of water pressure
