My thoughts on the mysterious metal dance: Since all your Nitric was consumed, it seems likely to me that your gold vanished because there wasn't enough acid to put all the different metals in solution, and it precipitated because of the reactivity series of metals where Pt can displace Au under the right circumstances. So it basically precipitated the gold by putting platinum in solution instead. Your solution ended up with Pt and what little Au could dissolve in the acid added when Pt was used up.

Nooooice. I think what you are looking for when trying to separate hot AR from undissolved solids quickly to prevent the gold from coming out of solution and cementing with the solids. If you just quickly pour off the liquid, you may get some solids coming over and if you add water to the solids to get as much of the gold bearing liquid, you still might get some solids coming over. You need a 100 micron Chinois stainless steel strainer.

You CAN get all the PGM's out. Displacement reaction with zink. You can collect the PGM powder in metallic form and store it for isolation and purification when you have more.

The excess Zink can easily be removed with HCl boils.

Mike after my first few drops with spoons of smb and dodging the fumes I now always dissolve the smb in water beforehand it works good and less dangerous fumes but that's my way. You do you

Good call on the PGMs IMO. They do far better in a concintreated solultion. Otherwise you beat your head up against a wall trying to precipitate it out
