Gina Hecht's performance as Mom was fantastic! The way she interrupted her own thoughts so naturally and realistically is impressive. Great performances all around.

I was thinking the same thing. It's very believable the toxic behaviour and the pain and issues the family has all gone through. There's no mention of a dad ... so i assume he walked out on them or she's a single mother.

The personality dynamics between the eldest daughter, & the mother was so intense, the daughter's expression went from seething to scowling, so when she wasn't modulating between the two, there was little or no feelings at all. This small drama encapsulated the resentful feeling between family members, who felt cheated out of their mother's true love.
@eugenetswong4 ай бұрын
Yeah, i usually poop all over Omeleto films, but this resonated with me. The whole lot of them, except for maybe Jesse, are toxic, but I sense that they were better off together, than struggling alone. Obviously, if there are better people out there for the kids, then so be it, but it's impossible to know ahead of time. I'm really angry sad, that the mom couldn't just sort out the info and improve. There is probably a bit of her in all of us.

A realistic and accurate description of what it’s like growing up in a dysfunctional family with a mother who is just like that. I should know. I’m a victim and I’m a survivor too! Cherish the moments you have with your family members who will not be around forever or possibly losing your bff sister to Lewy Body’s dementia like I just went through in March when my older sister passed away at the young age of only a 61 year old woman who I’ve missed every single day since her death.❤ Greetings from Boston, Massachusetts Amerikkka!!

Brilliant portrayal of narcissistic parenting and the roles the children play. For a majority of my life I was Jesse. (Her responses were spot on to self preservation). Oh, yeah. It feels like this family's emotional wellbeing is actually in the middle of the toxicity/abusiveness bell curve and not extreme (I have no data to back that up, just personal observation). Hurt people hurt people. My father was deeply wounded by his upbringing. He did what he could to not bring that hurt forward, with marginal success, frankly. He was deeply scarred, and he scarred others. Nothing like in this video, but still.... I'm finding that empathy, as explained by Brene Brown and others, has helped tremendously to heal my wounds. I'm so fortunate for my mother who is amazingly compassionate and caring and very safe to be with. She brought healing to my dad, I'm sure. Her influence is what put us at what I'll call the middle-low end of the toxicity/controlling/forceful/raging spectrum. The story's "family" I would see as at the higher end.... not the highest end to be sure. I have definitely seen worse. Nevertheless, they are rather high up on the toxicity scale.

Is it just me or did anyone else notice she only adopted kids who's names started with a J? Coincidence ... I think NOT. This was SO GRITTY. Everyone cast & crew nailed this, props to all.
@caspiansfriend4 ай бұрын
I noticed that as well. At first I thought that maybe she changed their names (because I wasn't sure how old they were when they were adopted). Either way, it just added to her controlling persona IMO.
@gnostic2684 ай бұрын
Adoptive parents are extremely problematic in most cases. The savior complex "I'm such a wonderful human" combined with the guilt trips of "you should be grateful someone wanted you" along with the adopted kids having to validate the endless need by the adoptive parent to be told they're a wonderful mother or father. This character as a mother has bio kids who obviously think that she is a narcissistic, verbally and physically abusive control freak. She also smoked the whole time, thoughtlessly exposing them to secondhand smoke and would continue to expose a 5 year old with no apologies. Adoption is unethical in most cases especially potential homes like this one.

Completely accurate! Just to note though; the three children are not her biological children either! She adopted each of them at separate times@@gnostic268

It took me a minute to place her, that’s the lady that played Jeanie on Mork and Mindy. This is amazingly real, I imagine this scenario plays in so many incarnations in life…it actually did in mine. My grandpa was a mean drunk most of their childhood, as adults before he passed they all grew together back around him, he bonded with his boys at the bars and casinos 😂 the message is clear in this, yeah sometimes they’re horrible people, but barring huge evil things, they’re all you get. And the one who will feel bad for not trying is you whether you like it or not, because you have to live with things and they might not.

I somewhat disagree on the forgiveness as a mandatory thing, but I fully agree on the moving on part (and of course if you personally need one to do the other, that's ok).
@BlueNorth3132 ай бұрын
@@arualblues_zero Exactly. Especially because "forgiving" is almost always associated to rekindling the relationship, or putting up with the relationship. Even if it doesn't entail those things, forgiveness is something that just can't be forced. No one "needs" to forgive.
