An Afghan woman goes on a date.
OUR KIND OF LOVE is used with permission from Elham Ehsas and Azeem Bhati. Learn more at azanafilms.wee....
When Harun, a second-generation British-Afghan man who grew up in London, can't seem to find love through Western-style dating, he decides to use his culture's methods to arrange a marriage.
But his potential love interest, Samira, is a recent refugee to London, and their first meeting -- at a stylish sushi restaurant, no less -- is also her very first date ever. Their differences leads to a small collision of expectations and perspectives, but what it opens up in the tension offers a glimmer of hope for the would-be couple.
This lovely chamber drama, co-written and co-directed by Elham Ehsas and Azeem Bhati, is a romantic story about the search for love and the longing for connection -- something that most people anywhere can relate to. Through its beautiful writing and lovely cinematography, it captures both the hope and melancholy of romance, the awkwardness of a first date and the strange rituals and practices of modern-day dating.
What makes this short film distinctive is its nuanced observation of how people feel the pull of their cultures, languages and traditions, even after growing up in the West. Stylish and self-assured Harun has his foot in both his British lifestyle and his cultural background, fluent in both the cosmopolitan tastes of a London sophisticate while loving the customs and culture of Afghanistan.
But Samira is new to it all, allowing both Harun and the audience to see Western urban life through new eyes and lending her a charm, curiosity and intelligence to her characterization. Watching her learn and adapt to her circumstances, no matter how small, is a pleasure.
Both actors -- co-director Ehsas as Harun and Afsaneh Dehrouyeh as Samira -- offer subtle, genuine and honest performances that reflect the uncertainty, longing and yearning that both literally bring to the table. Watching them unravel their vulnerabilities with one another, slowly and uncertainly, is a beautiful process to behold, creating a deeply touching storytelling experience.
Long-listed for a BAFTA, OUR KIND OF LOVE is a genuinely heartfelt slice-of-life short that keeps its style and aesthetic simple and elegantly pared down. There is no fancy camerawork to hide behind, or any dazzling production tricks to distract. Instead, its relative simplicity foregrounds the fact that often the biggest stories in our lives are ones where we lay bare who we are for another to witness -- and in risking vulnerability, we hope to find this openness reciprocated, leading to the type of understanding and connection that keeps us all going and makes life meaningful.

The letter in Farsi (Dari) reads: Hope you are having a good time in London and may all your dreams come true. I hope you won’t forget the good times we had together. Do you remember we sometimes secretly went to Uncle Abdul’s orchard and picked his apples. Hope the apples in London are as delicious as those in Afghanistan so when you eat them they remind you of the delicious apples in Uncle Abdul’s orchard. Hope I remain in your thoughts. Your little sister Noor

Well you were never in her shoes. If she breaks up with him, she'll have to go back Afghanistan, and marry someone show doesn't even asks for her permission. That's why she chose him in the first place. The boy on the other hand is already troubled by a breakup. He's emotional. Yet he's trying. And that's what matters to her. Back home in Afghanistan, she didn't meet anyone who even tried. Also there's cultural differences. You believe in knowing nearly everything about someone, being in a relationship with her and then suddenly you have to marry someone else, it's difficult to accept and go through it. The boy's gone through all that. Arranged marriage is a foreign concept to him. It's not a foreign concept for the girl. Both are new to certain aspects here.

Omg this was so beautiful! She acted so well, I had tears in my eyes and watched it over and over when she said "yes" to missing her family and country. It was so relatable!! I love how confident and sure of herself she is! She is ready to grow and accept her new culture and way of life but also fight for what she believes in. She is such a leader of her life! People think Muslim women are passive and becharis, but they are intelligent and strong, they know what's good for them and what's bad, they make their decisions knowing they might have to go through it alone.

I don't understand.. people think that Muslim women are passive and becharis (poor things?) Who thinks this? How do you know that? And if one woman is.. is she automatically unintelligent and weak because of that ? I have my doubts about that line of thinking. First of all not all woman are the same although you may think that I don't know, perhaps not. My take away from this clip is that of a character that is making the best of her situation. It's a more interesting story than many I've seen before.. probably a lot closer to the truth for some poeple.

Perhaps you would know that Hindi is not a language with it's own script. It's an amalgamation of Sanskrit, Urdu, Farsi and many others. Khwab, Khanjar, Khatarnak, Khamosh, Khush are all borrowed from ancient Persian (Farsi from which the Parsis got their name) people from Persia who spoke Farsi and it's close cousin Dari in Afghanistan. Urdu borrows heavily from both these languages. Cultures don't have borders. Only people do. Peace ✌️ ☮️

If you view it from a western/European perspective-yes, I agree with you. But from the eyes of a culture that practices arranged marriages, this first encounter where they decide to make a serious commitment to marriage-it is quite a different matter. This isn't a 'date', and there will not be years of going back and forth and working out relationship. This marriage is already in the works between the two families.

WOW! This was amazing. I'm Afghan, it's very rare that I get to see an actual movie, albeit a short one, about our culture or people that's displayed so beautifully. At the most I see Iranian stuff, which I don't mind at all of course! But I can't understand Farsi as well as I understand Dari. Without being in Afghanistan or around Afghans, I hear my mothertongue spoken very little. I'm very grateful that this video even exists. edit: a lot of people are complaining about the accent but I do hear born and raised Afghans speak with this accent occasionally, especially by women on the news. (Because it sounds more sophisticated to the Afghan public I guess?) I don't think the actress's accent is a big deal, or even a problem. I understood what she was saying just fine.

@assholebyginger
@assholebyginger 5 жыл бұрын
@@Ceibhfhionn They do! It's very noticeable. I often hear the woman's accent in Iranian works but I've also met many Afghans that speak with her accent. But if I were to watch an Afghan reality show, there would def be both accents present. So I don't want to say that the man's accent is much softer because he probably grew up in a different country; it could very well be that he never lost his accent and that's how he's always spoken Persian.

I admit that she is a great Iranian actress, But there are so many beautiful Afghan female actors/models in Europe why can't they just hire someone from their own country. Also, First of all, Kabul is the capital city of Afghanistan and not a village. 2nd- Girls from Kabul are very educated and can speak English fairly well if not fluent in some areas. And there ARE restaurants that offer Sushi/seafood or western food. So I don't know why there are so many misconceptions in this short film about Afghans and Afghan females living in Kabul. 3rd- Her accent is nowhere near the Dari language it's more like an Iranian person trying to imitate Dari but fails to do so.
