A man puts a mermaid in his bathtub.
BATHTUB BY THE SEA is used with permission from Ole-Andre Ronneberg. Learn more at gullskrinet.no.
Gunnar lives a quiet life by the sea. He works at the lighthouse, where he lives. And his routine is very simple and solitary: he wakes up, eats breakfast, tends to the lighthouse and occasionally takes a bath in a tub overlooking the ocean. Each day passes, marked off carefully on a calendar in his living quarters.
But Gunnar's routine is disrupted when an injured mermaid washes up on the shore after high tide one day. He tends to the mermaid's tail, letting her keep wet in his bathtub. But on his bath day, he deposits her back into the sea. But he soon discovers he misses her presence, though he may have lost her for good.
Written and directed by Ole-Andre Ronneberg, this lovely short fantasy-drama captures the tension between sticking with what we know and breaking out of our routines. Gunnar's life is profoundly pared-down and quiet, and the first few minutes of the film capture the silences, rituals and horizons of his world. Life at the lighthouse is gorgeous and full of natural beauty, with its clear gorgeous light, horizons of sky and sea and voluptuous banks of clouds, all rendered in exquisite cinematography and editing that luxuriates in the small moments of Gunnar's life. But it's also very lonely, and Gunnar has no one to talk to or even be around.
Gunnar's life changes when a mermaid washes up on the shore. She's in pain from an injured tail, and Gunnar rushes to get her to his bathtub. He tends to her tail and feeds her, and even spends companionable silence with her. The progression of their companionship is charted with the same even, contemplative pace as much of Gunnar's life, with a certain matter-of-fact charm.
The old, ramshackle lighthouse-keeper and the lovely young mermaid -- played by actors Viggo Solum and Anne Cecilie Ukkelberg with an understated naturalism -- make for a sweetly unlikely pair, but they also come to represent the comfort and joy of companionship and an almost primal desire for togetherness. That togetherness, though, is disrupted by Gunnar's insistence on keeping to the ritualized routine he's developed during his tenure at the lighthouse.
Much of BATHTUB BY THE SEA is silent, as fitting to such a taciturn character and beautifully desolate setting. But it is rich with a quiet sort of magic and enchantment, with a feeling for how the natural environment shapes experience and emotion. But nothing lasts forever, and even nature itself is in constant flux and evolution. The story ends when Gunnar receives some news that will change his life forever, but the conclusion for both Gunnar and the viewer has a sense of hope and possibility. Things change and routines must adapt, after all, but friendship and devotion are the constants that make it all bearable.

Hi everybody, I am Ole-André Rønneberg, the creator of this movie. Thank you all for all your nice comments on the film! I am so glad that many of you liked it. It was a challenge to make the film, but I am very happy about how it turned out. I will stop by occasionally and answer questions about the film.:-) I hope that everybody is staying safe during this time, where we all have been on our own desolated islands.

Everyone else understands and I don’t have a clue what it means. Or what the mermaid represents. But it was relatable in some ways and I liked it. He’s alone, existing in his comfort zone but without purpose, and has been putting off the inevitable, changing and leaving into the great unknown. The mermaid is the catalyst for change. An unexpected guest comes into his life needing help and he takes the opportunity to help. Later he is rewarded for his actions by getting helped during his time of need. Now he won’t have to go into the unknown alone but has someone to help guide him.

Ole-Andre, really excellent film. Thanks very much for making it for us to watch. I think it's a film you need to watch a few times, it's seemingly sparse on the surface, but there are many things hidden in it that I think I missed the first time. What I see as a big message from the film is that although the Lightkeeper keeps to quite a rigid routine, he takes it in step when the Mermaid is washed up. Loads her into his barrow and puts her in his bathtub. I mean what else....:-} And then when ALL of his structure is swept away, he accepts gracefully and stoically her proposal. And just as any good Western, we see them riding....er rowing....off into the sunset. And to those of us in a much more populated landscape, to whom his seems desolate and lonely, well, need to re-think that. Lonely perhaps, but beautiful. He lives in a truly beautiful setting, and not polluted by the noise of others. There's a good story that's related. A very rich businessman is driving on a country road in Natal (South Africa) and his car breaks down. He walks to the nearby litle village, and finds some men sitting under a tree, smoking and drinking beer. They invite him to sit down, and share a beer with them. He asks for help, and they offer to pull his car with their oxen to a place to be fixed. But when they seem slow to act, he gets excited and impatient. And he says he is in a big rush, because he needs to get to his rented vacation home.....where he will be able to sit in his chair, and drink a beer..... He asks them why don't they make some effort, and and raise some extra pigs and goats to sell, to make more money? He says otherwise you will stay as you are, without any money. Then when you are older, you can retire! And they look at him, and say what will we DO when we retire? Well, he says, you can sit under a nice shady tree and drink beer!

Thank you for sharing such a beautiful piece of artwork! The man's life reminds of my life...with my cat. Sometimes I feel we're the only living creatures on earth due to continued remote working and social distancing, and my kitty is all I have in life. It's a mixed emotion of happiness and loneliness.

Hang in there. We are all in the same boat. Norway, where I live, has shut down totally with social distancing again. It was hard. I hope, when things is getting back to normal, when ever that will be, that we can celebrate what people have in common, and not look so much at the differences. And find courage to get back to each other, as human beings. I wish you a wonderful Christmas, Moonie The Pretty Giant (if you celebrate Christmas).

I feel that I have been on my own lonely island for 24 years now. It's not a bad 'island' but the longer I am on 'it' the farther from reality I seem to travel. Sometimes I miss the days before I came to this island of life when I got to share it with...her.

took 4 minutes for any substantial action to happen - the kiss of death for a film short. Anybody who has the slightest familiarity with outboard motors knows that you NEVER - I mean NEVER - go out in a small boat without a pair of oars. All that said, I like the metaphor - the old geezer is peacefully taking care of his lighthouse, unaware that he's already been fired. The sea maid arrives to further disrupt his peaceful existence. Real life to the max: there's always something...it can't ever be easy...gittin old ain't fer sissies.

Nope. They moved to the bottom of the ocean and made cute little babies. Thousands of them at a time. Most of them get eaten, of course. She accepts this as being the way of nature, but it's taking him a little while to adjust. It doesn't stop him making them, though.
