A young man attends to his ex's wedding.
ONLY IN DREAMS is used with permission from Travis Mauck. Learn more at tjmauck.com.
Jacob attends the wedding of his ex-girlfriend Amber, well after he and Amber decided to "just friends." But as he drifts through the reception, dealing with awkward conversations, he is inundated with strange visions that leads to outbursts and threaten to overwhelm his reality.
Soon these dreams begin to mix in memories of his past romance with Amber, destabilizing him and putting him face-to-face with his regret. But eventually Jacob must untangle his past memories and present fantasies in order to finally speak his truth -- and move forward into his future with a new sense of honesty.
Writer-director Travis Mauck's blend of fantasy and drama is about the interplay of past and present, and how memories push and pull at our emotions. Essentially a type of fantasia into Jacob's subjectivity, the film is visually stylish, with gleaming colors, beautiful cinematography and polished camerawork that lend a heightened yet realistic feeling to being inside Jacob's head.
His imaginings are on the strange, surreal side, but they blend seamlessly into his memories of his relationship with Amber. While the visions are chaotic and emotionally fraught, the scenes in the past exist in a different emotional register, with quiet and subtle performances alive to what's unspoken between the couple. They're honest, touching and sad -- and very relatable to anyone who longs for the past, as imperfect and wrong as it was.
The accelerating intensity of Jacob's visions pushes him to speak honestly to Amber, and confront his own true feelings and desires, leading to a final sequence that's both visually ravishing and gently heartbreaking. Fantasy and reality become entangled and harder to tell apart from one another, but when the illusion is finally punctured, the moment is subtle and quietly devastating, both for Jacob and the audience.
ONLY IN DREAMS is ultimately a sincere and emotional exploration of how to reckon with our past, with its unfulfilled longings, sadness and regret. Unabashed in its romanticism and filled with relatable moments, it takes awhile to settle into its own unique rhythms. But once it finds its footing, it creates a deeply personal journey that leaves viewers with a lyricism that makes the melancholy of life meaningful -- and just a little more endurable in its beauty.

I don't usually bother signing in and leaving a comment but I have to point out and show great appreciation to the scene where Jacob and Amber met up for the first time in the bowling alley. 3:59 "Do you believe in love at first sight" - (the bowling ball in his side goes in to the gutter - it was bad game.) 4:10 mark, "Hopefully your game over there is better than your game over here" (Her side hits a strike - a good come back) 4:11 mark, "This isn't going well" - ball goes in the gutter. Finally, around 4:45 - he made her smile and ball on his side hits a strike. Beautiful. Wow.

I remember saying once that the day I read his wedding announcement to someone else would feel like reading an obituary. Now... Almost 10 years later, married to my best friend with 4 great kids, I wouldn't go back for anything. If this hit you in the feels and you're going through this kind of heartache... Just. Hold. On. No, I don't think so. At least not mostly. I feel it was mostly him being at the wedding, him recalling memories, and him experiencing emotions. Towards the end though I think it was something of joint daydream (the ocean scene) as they were actually dancing, and they were eventually separated, for the last time and for good.

Ahh, the story of the one that got away. They usually mean a lot to you when *you* yourself have not yet moved on. And maybe you never move on. But if/when you do, you will find someone that is better than the one that got away, much more better than you can ever imagine. Eventually, you will discover the one that got away left for a reason: you were never really compatible. You were trying to force a square peg into a round hole, or the other way around. Something stopped one of you, or both of you, and either one of you wasn't ready to face that aspect of yourselves, and instead of ever dealing with it, the relationship paid the price, and either both or one of you was left without ever really finding the space to address that one thing. And instead you are left with the unresolved, the one that got away. It wasn't that person. It was the aspect of yourself that you never faced. And the other person moved on because they finally faced it, embraced it, and decided that who they are does not involve you. It might be your turn to do the same. You will be healthier for it. Trust me.

Or people can be less focused on their careers, more focused on loving each other for the sake of their Creator, and less on being selfish. Most divorces today are a product of selfishness and ego by one or the other and most relationships end because of that as well. If you dont really love someone, dont date in the first place. Either be in for the long rundont mess around, or dont go around dating people and breaking their hearts for some whimsical desire.

It is so hard to let go of those we love even when being together is not making us happy like it once did, giving it up is heartbreaking, our memories tie us to an eternal hope . It is a bitter sweet thing to live through a passionate love until it mellows into friendship. So much to both be grateful for & to regret. This film resonates deeply with me , I let go after 23 yrs and thankfully we can still love each other, 12 yrs on and I am grateful for the strength I found to have left and I would happily attend his wedding if it ever happened , but I doubt it will.

Ok, I am a dancer, multiple types, ballroom, country line dancing, country couple, Ceilidh, hip hop, etc. I have danced with many girls over the years (and many over the past year, I dance a lot, it happens). The way they are dancing in the last scene is not like a couple of friends. If the guys at the club saw me dancing with a girl like that they would automatically assume we were either already in a relationship, or going quickly on our way to one. Hell, the way she was dancing with her husband was more appropriate for friends, proper framing, hands in the right places, how you would dance with anyone that knew the dance. The dance between the two of them was about how close they could get, how much of the other person they could touch, which would make sense if it was the tango, but it was just a general slow dance. Also, that is an absolute shitload of eye contact, I haven't had that much eye contact during a dance with a chick since high school.... and thanks for that memory coming back to the surface (long story, quick version "one that got away").

This reminds me of what happened last Christmas. I got a visit from the ghost of Christmas past. Life teaches you that if you live long enough every shade of human behavior will parade in front of you. Well, I had an old girlfriend call me! I chalk it up to Christmas. Tracked me down using the modern technology that is the internet. So unexpected. But wisdom comes with age and one learns not to be rude. So we talk and memories come tumbling out, things that I remember about those long lost years that she has forgotten and things that have remained vivid in her memory that are gone from mine. Slowly, I began to see the old, the real Debbie revealed; like an old faded canvas smothered by years of neglect refreshed and restored, colors vibrant once again. I used to go up and see her in Piscataway, NJ and we had whirlwind days of playing tourists in love in what I used to think was one of the most romantic cities in the world, New York. When it was time for me to go home it was a reminder of all the good byes of my young unsettled life as a Navy brat. We would sit and drink hot chocolate on cold winters' nights at the coffee shop, waiting for the plane that would whisk me away. I was always bereft, holding her hand, holding onto her scent, hoping for a few more minutes before I had to go back to my lonely empty life from which she had saved me for a few scant days at a time. Later, she brought life to me when she took the plane from Newark to Florida. She would descend from the platform like some movie star trailed by men anxious to carry whatever piece of luggage they could for the blonde princess. Carelessly throwing her arms around my neck, her body would anchor against mine with so much force I needed a wall behind me not to fall over, and yet her face touched mine with the softness of a cat… all to the disappointment of her impromptu retinue. Looking back now in the clear light of day, although it sure didn’t seem like it then, she was the worldly older woman, and I the proper young man struggling to live up to the obligations of my life and make something of myself. My castle was empty without her. So I lived a wildly unbalanced life, teetering between ecstasy and depression, between loneliness and exultation; all dependent on if I were with her. And now, calling me from out of the blue, she can’t believe it doesn’t matter to me anymore.

@@AMR-zo5ut It's not true, as the number is significantly less than 3.5 billion. Even assuming you could impossibly meet and sort through 3.5 billion people in a single lifetime, you would naturally have to eliminate those who are already married, the very old, the very young, etc. Most people also marry someone who they meet locally, which reduces the original number of 3.5 billion to whatever the populace of your preferred gender in your local area is, not accounting for the prior factors which would further reduce the number. Though of course you realistically won't meet all the people in your area, so the number will be reduced even further by a factor which highly depends upon your social habits. So get stuck on a single person as long as you like. But persistence only wins them over in the movies; so I'd say your point is still valid, just for different reasons.

I love the maturity of this piece. Here is a man that never quite got over the first great love of his life finally accepting that she has moved on. He had to see it for himself to let it go. The first ending where he tells her they can be friends(knowing that is not going to be possible yet telling her what he thinks she needs to hear) is (I think) how this ends. The second ending(where it descends into fantasy images) is how he(they?) feels. The last few moments where she rejoins her husband as he disappears is (probably entirely) in her head(she had to let him go as well). He left her on the beach, and at that moment as he is completely gone (as she is in her husband's arms)is the moment where she loses any lingering doubts. This is adult in all the best ways a mature and healthy person processes loss and grief. I applaud it.

The mystery of the heart. It seems to be so common to fall deeply in love; have unconditional love to someone that is not destined to be with you. Me and my ex were and still love each other deeply yet we are not together. Life choices separated us because being together was more of a settle down from my part and his. It is hard when you have to make the choice to walk away. It is hard when that choice is not because you don't love them anymore but because you love yourself more.

That's why I did not make any regrets to the one I married bc I dont want to think about the possibility of what if in the future while I'm with another person. In life do not expect to recieve the same weight as you provide to another, do not expect the kindness in return bc you believe the singularity as equal treatment to be the same, do not expect the other to live by how you believe a life should be lived or spent, do not expect to give something and have something in return to be more grand later in the future, do not expect your love for someone to have the same weight bc you believe true love can be measurable which it is not true it's something you cannot measure, do not expect the expected from one another its life and you cannot calculate what the other will accurately do to make your life easier or fulfill your respective task. Love comes in many shapes and forms you have to accept the changing form of love bc it comes with hardship, heart aches, head aches, stress, happy, unparalleled hole that never seems to get filled, spontaneous surprises, feeling of of endless satisfaction, etc. Many people will encounter all these issues but if you both walk on the same road knowing all these possibilities you're life will become much easier and you can tolerate each others difference then turning it into something beautiful. That is why you dont expect the expected just live your life as a support beam and hopefully that person that you without realizing it is the other half of your support bc without them you'll fall and without you so will they. Hope this enlightened anyone that came across this message.
