They could not take the youngest sister with them - she would not understand why they were leaving. For her the father is still right in everything he does, he is still an authority for her. She does not yet understand what it means to be a woman living in this community - that is why she is happy to discover her first period has started. What I am surprised by is that she went out of the house instead of changing her pants first. I am guessing she was so happy that she wanted the whole world to know about it, but even so - bloody pants are so uncomfortable!

10:13 she stepped on a bear trap or perhaps a smaller one for foxes or something. I don't think she'd be able to walk after that and would need to be hospitalized. Anyone with experience here?

I'm no expert, but I think that she would be able to walk, but abnormally. I couldn't see on my tablet what she stepped in. Thank you for pointing that out. It's weird that it was set near the house.

I couldn't understand how she could walk after that either. It did look like a small claw-like trap for a fox or something, and yes you would think it would have broken her ankle, especially if it was so tightly closed that she could not open it herself and needed help. And as someone else had mentioned, why was one set so close to the house, right under the window? Was Daddy suspecting she was sneaking out and trying to trap her? Sick father on so many levels! 😖
