AliceHarper, I so agree with you. Artists from the 1960's and 1970's created some of the most enduring and meaningful music ever. Stunning originality, gorgeous melodies and harmonies, universally powerful themes, and genuine talent not aided by digital manipulation are hallmarks of this incomparable period in pop music. The Fifth Dimension are one of the great music groups of that era or any era. They delivered timeless performances of music that remains fresh and vibrant to this day.

As stated elsewhere 'Aquarius/Let The Sun Shine' were two separate numbers from the Broadway musical 'Hair' which opened in April of 1968. Let The Sun Shine was the number for the famous nude scene. Not only did members of the cast spontaneously disrobe, during the four year run of the show the audience also began to participate in taking off their clothes and dancing down the aisles then up and onto the stage.
@Zeuszgrl3 жыл бұрын
My Aunt was an usherette at that theater and it did not happen at every performance. I'm sure it made some of the people feel liberated but real freedom has nothing to do with nudity, if it did, porn stars would be the happiest people in the world, and they're actually some of the most pathetic.

@krkhns3 жыл бұрын
I worked as stage hand for Hair at the Aquarius Theater in Los Angeles in the mid-70s. You are wrong on several points. First, the nude scene was not during "Let the Sun Shine In", which is the very last song of the show (it was added to make the end more uplifting). The nude scene was during "Where Do I Go" at the close of Act I. It was not spontaneous. It was scripted. Performers were given the option to disrobe or not. A scrim would lift and the nude performers would chant "Beads, power, freedom, happiness". Yes, the audience was encouraged to join the cast on stage, but during the encore when they would reprise "Let the Sun Shine In". Since that number was at the end and the cast was fully clothed, there would be no reason for the audience to disrobe. If there was any audience participation in the nudity it was a regional thing. It never happened on Broadway or in LA. They had enough problems finding venues that would allow the nude scene. Several states banned the entire production and it took a US Supreme Court decision in 1970 to lift them.

These are songs from the Broadway/touring musical Hair. Aquarius is usually how the show opens, and Let the Sunshine In is how it ends, and the whole show is very interactive with their audience. During the last song they invited audience members up on stage with the cast if they want to go, which I did when the show toured in Toronto in 2011. Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In is from the rock musical Hair, which first ran off-Broadway in 1967, and ran on Broadway and West End in 1968. The original cast album was a big seller, and there were several hit covers of songs from the musical, including this one, "Hair" (the title song) by The Cowsills, Good Morning Starshine by Oliver, and Easy to Be Hard by Three Dog Night. It's worth seeking out the tracks from the original cast album, although I should warn you that some of them are pretty raw and hard-hitting in their lyrics. Some of my favorites from that album are Manchester, England; Frank Mills; Three-Five-Zero-Zero; and of course, Aquarius and The Flesh Failures (Let the Sunshine In). The Fifth Dimension had other big hits with Up-Up and Away; Stoned Soul Picnic; Wedding Bell Blues; One Less Bell to Answer; and (Last Night) I Couldn't Get to Sleep at All. After the group broke up, members Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. continued to perform together, and had a hit with You Don't Have to Be a Star (To Be in My Show). I've love for you to react to any of these, especially Up-Up and Away.

I was a young girl singin' this song, and only now, at 67, I realize how much this song was ahead of its time. It's now, that we are shifting into the Age of Aquarius, coming out of the Age of Pisces, the fish, time of religions and other thought programs that have bred separation. We're expanding, further, and becoming even more conscious. At this time of awakening, we step into the greater knowing of our heart and the Higher Self, our personal discernment, and the vibe we project. Ooooo, and how music moves us! (I just listened to y'all with Prince and then Chaka Khan:) We truly are one, brothers and sisters, just walkin' each other home...each generation paving the wave for the next. I love y'all's musical exploration. Hehe, you make me smile and I hope you know, that music that brings on joy, raises the frequency of our be-ing, individually and even planetarily. This is crucial to the wake-up and shifts you are mightily part of, for such a time as this! Oh yes you are;0) Shine.Shine.Shine. Yes, let the sun-shine, the love flow working its magic over the All. I'm surprised you've never heard this song as it's been in several movies. Interesting story behind this. The group was in NYC and Billy lost his wallet in a cab and a guy found it and gave it back to him and they gave him tickets to their show. After the show, the guy offered them tickets to his show. He was the producer of the Broadway musical Hair. They went and loved Aquarius and wanted to record it and their manager said it had been covered by a lot of artists already and they said not by the 5th dimension. They wanted to do something different with it and their producer suggested combining it with another song from the show Let the Sunshine In. Love this group you have to listen to more of their music.

The 5th Dimension was amazingly popular in the late 60s-early 70s. (I say amazingly because they really didn't "fit" into what was the musical trend of the time...harder & harder rock & psychedelia, prog rock, etc) Really great singers tend to succeed, no matter the decade. :-)

It helped that radio wasn't corporatized like it is now and stations were not stuck with playing certain songs and a certain genre. This came out in 1969 and was the #2 song for the year, only bested by The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar". Other musicians rounding out the top 10: Sly and the Family Stone, Temptations, Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Tommy Roe, The Foundations, Tommy James and the Shondells. Looking down the list there is Marvin Gaye, Henry Mancini, Three Dog Night, Creedence Clearwater Revival, etc. It was a good time to listen to radio. He was so good that Quincy Jones had him play bass on all of Michael Jackson's albums, Off The Wall, Thriller, and he's recorded with some many famous artists-- huge resume. He earned the moniker Thunder Thumbs as it was well known that he often broke the bass strings with his fingers from hitting them so hard. Try to break a bass string; it's extremely difficult. When I was attending classes in Broadcast Specialist School, at the Defense Information School, located at that time at Ft Ben Harrison, Indiana, from Sep - Nov 1968, during the Vietnam War, this song was very popular and my group chose it as our theme song in our big final project before graduation. We had students from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard, all mixed together in those classes. We were training to be broadcasters for Armed Forces Radio Network, across the globe, and with the sailors, on ships across the world. This song was pretty much the beginning of the New Age movement. This song is from the play “Hair” Which was a big, and controversial, hit. It raised eyebrows for it’s language, depiction of drug use, and nudity. It opened on Broadway in 1968. It won a Tony Award. In the play Aquarius was sung at the beginning and The Flesh Failures (Let the sun Shine) at the end. They are both more dramatic than the 5th Dimension’s versions IMHO. I saw the play in Hollywood at the Aquarius Theater in 1970. Unbelievably, I went with my high school English class (hippy teacher)I couldn’t believe my parents let me go! It was also the time of man going to the moon, civil rights marches, and the feeling that the world was going to change for the better. Still a long way to go but boy these songs said we COULD get where we needed to go. Thank you.:)

I was 20 and in college when Hair opened. It was regarded as shocking with its onstage nudity, but it also encapsulated that hope and positivity my generation held for a peaceful and humanitarian future out from under the constant underlying threat of nuclear war with the USSR and the inequity of segregation and repression of civil rights. The 60s had its dark side as well, with the assassinations of our most inspiring and influential leaders,, but we still had hope that we as a nation could change for the better. 〽️
@ddiamondr13 жыл бұрын
@@lauradetjen1573 I was a bit younger, in high school, in Canada. The 60's certainly did have a dark side. I remember the shock I felt at the Kent State shootings and some 'older' citizens of the area saying those kids deserved it. Tragic. We had a lot of young men dodging the draft coming up here to avoid fighting in Vietnam, a war they felt unjust. And, yes the nuclear threat. The assassinations'; we had them in Canada too. A Quebec politician was kidnapped and later killed by a Quebec separatist group, while a second British diplomat was released by them. Such a senseless killing of Pierre LaPorte. :(. It shocked our country to its core. And, unfortunately, in Canada we felt 'smug' looking at the riots in Watts etc happening down south, not even KNOWING of our own genocidal treatment of our Indigenous people's. We weren't taught in school about the reprehensible residential school system. When I was in my late teens I was lucky to get to know many Indigenous people because we wintered our horses on the Nakoda reserve near us. That is where I learned of the horrors suffered by our Indigenous people's and that our smugness had absolutely no basis in reality. Wow, that was long:). Still...I miss the hopeful side of the 60's, where you decorated your own jeans and tie-dyed your own tee-shirts and rejected wearing corporate branding, where we were reaching for some kind of utopia not tied to grey office cubicles....We've gone in a whole other direction now, but still lots of great young people about these days too :)). Laura's album, Eli & The Thirteenth Confession, is a classic from the late 60s. Give her a listen!! Another Laura Nyro fact: Some of her songs have become major hits for a wide variety of artists, including Barbra Streisand (Stoney End), Blood, Sweat, & Tears (And When I Die), & Three Dog Night (Eli's Coming).

They are awesome as I listened to them in the 60's & 70's. Truly fantastic musicians.

I remember the 5th Dimension very well. In the late 60s/early 70s, they were a staple on every variety show.

You 2 will love the movie "Hair"! One of my favorite movies! My hubby didn't want to watch it because of the subject matter, as he did just get out of the Marines! I talked him into it and he liked it! So many great songs Including Aquarius! Feel like watching it again! Love you guys! Amber you are a sweetheart!

This version came out in ‘69. In ‘70 I was 13 and our 65yo choir teacher let us sing it! We loved her 💗🎵🎶 I am now 64 and I really appreciate that she did that for us and some other songs of the time.

This was one of the few groups that I had an album of. I didn't have much money, but I bought this album. It was definitely a change in our society going on when this music came out.

I was 7 when I first heard this and it still stirs intense happy emotions in me at the change up. Love watching the authentic reaction and assessments of two lovely young people. Some truly wonderful songs. You two brighten my day. ❤
