I miss the 70’s. Radio stations played such a variety of music. We were exposed to rock, soul, R&B, country etc… it made the listening experience so much more fun and interesting. Plus we all have memories of certain songs during events in our life. I think things are too segregated now.

Are you saying there was an individual radio station that played all those genres? I don't remember such a thing. Each radio station seemed to be focused mainly on a particular genre, maybe adding a genre where the lines were blurred, for instance R&B or Pop might also play some disco. If there was a crossover hit, that was a different thing. I lived in a fairly big city. Country stations played country. R&B played R&B. Hard Rock played hard rock. And on and on.

Average White Band is a great example of one of those bands that I probably wouldn't have ever heard either if not for this channel. I've known the name of the band since I was a kid but, for some reason, always had it in my head that they were one of those interchangeable (for me, a little kid, at the time) '70s southern rock bands that my mom's dirtbag second husband would blast in his Camaro in between rounds of smoking weed and not having a job. Because I enjoy the RSR vibe, though, I end up watching every video regardless of whether I know the artist or not and end up finding gems like the Average White Band. They are NOT AT ALL what I thought they were and WOW they are amazing. This is definitely a rabbit hole I'll be diving down immediately, using some of the suggestions in the other comments here as good starting places.

@@patrickmurchison9145 And Glasgow, don't forget. I remember Hamish with Dream Police and in London. I knew Onnie and Hamish from rubbing shoulders in the Picasso and the R'n'B All Nighter, clubs in Glasgow. Lots of Glasgow bands were playing R'n'B and Soul covers. The Alex Harvey Soul Band and Power ( later re-named Stone the Crows) ruled the roost - both had a bit more Blues in them. A great live music and dance scene was Scotland.

This was an undiscovered gem that I'd never heard before. I was aware of "Pick Up the Pieces" but it doesn't have vocals. The soul they were singing with just hits deep. I'll have to suggest this one to the "Beth Roars" channel, being Scottish herself she would appreciate this. If others haven't seen her channel, I highly recommend her. She is a vocal coach that does breakdowns of various vocals of popular and not so popular artists.

Without seeing them, most people have thought that they were a black group because of how soulful they sound. I imagine you were glad you got to see them live for the 2nd time, because a lot of people have reacted to this band's name in a similar way. Please keep in mind that their name was never meant to have any negative racial connotations, they started in the early 70's back in Scotland and their name was birthed from a quirky joke, as they had a friend that traveled to a lot of different places around the world, upon his return from his journeys he would make statements like: "the weather there was either too hot or too cold for the "average white man." They heard things like that so many times from this guy, that they thought to themselves, hey let's call ourselves the "Average White Band!!!" I learned somewhere in another comment that makes great sense about the "Marketing of their Name" using the word AVERAGE: "under-promise" but "over-deliver!!!" And wow, do these guys ever deliver the soul & the funk!!!

a great Scottish band.. some of them are from my hometown.. In fact I went to school with a few of their siblings.. a younger generation.. I knew the brother of the original drummer.. he lent me a tape of a gig they payed in London when they just broke through. wish I'd made a copy..

Average White Band most surprisingly originates from Scotland and yet at one time I actually thought they that were Afro-American dudes!! My utmost respect to these talented Scotsmen and their great music!! 💯👍

The AWB was a Scottish funk & R&B band that had a series of soul & disco hits between 1974 & 1980. That had some good songs such as "When Will You Be Mine", "Let's Go Around Again" & "Cut The Cake". But the instrumental song "Pick Up The Pieces" in 1975 was their biggest hit.

I just posted a comment to having seen them perform this live in Sacramento in late 1975 or early 76. This was the first time I had experienced a mixed-race concert at about 50-50. It was legendary! AWB bridged the gap, and the whole house was a funkin!!! Check out Soul Train performances of this band. A bunch of soul lovin white brothers from freakin SCOTLAND. Go figure!!! I am blessed to have seen them live, and I am a hunky who has all their albums. This song struck my heart forever!!! It came out when I experienced my first love, and I'm now 65 and blessedly married to my life-long love of over 37 years!!! True love lasts forever!

Montreux! Nice. Just raw soul laid out there. You can't be afraid. Allow love to happen. This seems like a pertinent quote: “The best way to find out if you can trust somebody is to trust them.” Hemmingway

Brand new subscriber & loving you two! Took me awhile to go back & catch up to today, but so enjoyed hearing some of my favorite music! I’m 63, and my kids & I share great artists. It makes me so happy to see you enjoy some of the greatest music ever! Love your reactions, and you describe the music so well! Again, for Female Friday, you have to listen to Sia, either Chandelier or Titanium! Crazy look, doesn’t usually show her face, and also turns away from the audience when she sings. Former drug addict & alcoholic, tough female to come back from all of that. You will not regret it, I promise!! ♥️ Linda G
