When AWB was on Soul Train, they played live, when most of the groups used record tracks and lip-synced. They wanted to prove they were actually playing and singing. Other hits, School boy Crush, Cut the Cake, Work to Do, Person to Person, just a few.

Check out Average White Band (AWB) appearances on Soul Train. "Cut The Cake", "Person to Person" " Queen of My Soul" "If I Ever Lose This Heaven" or "School Boy Crush" The singer with the beard, Alan Gorie continues to lead AWB and they have about 30 albums from the 70's up to the present. The high voice singer, Hamish Stuart left AWB in '82 to join Paul McCartney's band. He currently leads the other half of the original AWB and calls them 360°. They are from Scotland and before starting AWB they were the backup band for American soul singers touring Europe. They often backed Ben E. King and feature him on an album. There are many acts that might be considered "cultural appropriation" but AWB has always been innovators in "Black" funk music, rather than copycats.

AWB was named by a female singer /Bonnie Bramlett, when she first heard them, she said they sounded more like a soul band than an average white band. Hamish Stuart is the one with that great soulful voice. Another great song by him, after he left the group, He formed another group including the drummer Steve Ferrone from AWB, The group was called, Easy Pieces, and the song: Tuggin at my Heartstring. You guys should check out that sound and play it.

The reaction of both of you at the exact same time was priceless. It was so funny how you both knew that the name did not represent the band. “Average “, “what you talking bout Willis”, “ ain’t nothing average about these guys”. Are you kidding me, “ don’t judge a book....”. Absolutely priceless. Both lead singers are good and they complement each other perfectly. When the band was put together back in the 70’s, in Scotland, they knew they had something and they soared well into the 1980’s. Check out their “Soul Searching”, “ Shine”, “Feel No Fret”, “Benny & Us” albums just to name a few.

Before they were famous They were playing at a Downtown Pasadena bar called "The Loch Ness Monster" which was owned by an Irish guy who helped UK bands get exposure in the Sates. I was a regular, Guiness Stout on tap, & Live Music. I got to know them, being a regular & Blown away by "White Soul" from Ireland. There was patio out back with a door out to the alley where I & others went to smoke "something" during breaks. The lead singer & a couple others let me share, so we chatted. There was 5, or 6 of them living in some 1 room place the bar owner arranged, the bar;s dance floor/band corner was maybe 10 yards square, with the 5-7 guys in maybe 15'x 8' corner, no stage, the Bass player had to lift his guitar neck to let people into restroom. One time they told me, don't let the drummer smoke any, he can't handle it, but they looked forward to my offerings at break, & often were even more impressive after the Breaks. This went on for a few months & they also played some places that were springing up and changing Öld-town Pasadena from drunks & prostitutes to Night clubs & 5 star dining with Valet service. Any way one night while passing the "smoke"around in the alley, the lead singer says: "Look, we got a record deal!"& then he shows me a check for $30K or so, just a signing bonus (they were BROKE at the time) He said "Stevie Wonder"s People came to see them & were Blown Away. I think the bar owner invited them & then helped the guys with the contract, not sure about that, but anyway that was the last time I saw them. And the rest as they say..................

Y'all are catching up now, & thats all that matters. A lot of people have been enjoying all music without the restraints, the environments around us push people into, if you allow it. Once you open that mind, and spirit to new things, it opens a flood gate of what's real, and that is a beautiful thing, something changes in your spirit. You become whole, and that brings a peace money can never buy. You have a beautiful journey ahead, much love to you both, and your followers. Such great music in every genre. 🤗

AWB was one of those bands that was always at their best live in concert. I saw them live in the 70's (a few times) and came away just in awe of their talent, always wanting more. Chaka Khan even used one of AWB's songs performing with AWB's Hamish Stuart on guitar, "What cha gonna do for me" in the early 80's. These guys really were wonderful and probably did not get enough credit at the time. Most fans would agree that AWB was not Average.
