lol you already have it apart for the reverse gear so replacing the fifth gear probably didn't add much to the cost of the thing. I imagine most of the cost of it was the labour. Ouch. Still that part is a way better than the piece of wood ( cut from a shovel’s hand) that i found fitted on my V8 Cayenne’s water pump instead of a thermostat !! What a great clip to teach new four wheel drivers what to look for in a vehicle,i purchased a land rover county diesel a few years ago and did exactly the same thing as you, except i did all the work. The 1986 land rover 4bd1 diesel cost me $4000 AU,it end up costing me approx 30,000,i reconditioned the gearbox,transfer box,diffs,cv joints,HTE axles,33s km2 tyres, front and rear elockers,aluminum full roof rack,arb bullbar,runva 13000lb winch,brown davis auxiliary tank. Was it worth it,well i drive around with a grin on my face so yes. Enjoy my adventure friend.

The longer this series goes, the shinier the nugget that it is becomes. We in the US call it base-lining. And this series is a right-on example of your average baseline job. Depth, detail, and cost are probably right in line where they should be. Excellent light on the topic.

I’m a bit late but, removing the constant 4wd was a very common conversion here in Australia on the 80 series supposedly to save fuel and wear and tear as it stops the whole front diff assembly from turning including the front tail shaft. It was very popular for cars that did a lot of highway or city driving. Read most. It essentially turned the driveline back into a 60 series. The kit came with the free wheeling hubs and a replacement spool to replace the centre diff spool. You centre diff modification was no emergency repair, whoever did this knew exactly what he was doing and was just saving money by replacing the spool with a shaft. You can still buy the conversion kits new for between $500 and $600 AUD plus fitting. A lot of people didn’t really understand the system and while yes you get constant 4x4 you are still at the mercy of the diffs. So if you get your Land Cruiser and jack up one wheel what happens? Like any other open diff all the drive goes to the wheel with the least amount of traction, the one in the air, UNLESS you hit the button to lock the centre diff. Bear in mind though that the centre diff lock simply locks the front and rear diffs together but both of those diffs are open so if you drop say the passengers side into a muddy ditch and lose traction on the front and rear passenger side wheels then your going nowhere. This can be mitigated by having a limited slip diff in the rear or the better option of diff locks. I hope this helps. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

I have run an automotive repair shop for a few decades. I know this will cost an amazing amount with all of this restoration. When it comes to vehicles I love, I go ahead and throw thousands into their proper restoration. It hurts once, but gives me great memories and excitement for years without trouble. I'm disabled now and am doing a restoration of a 1999 Mitsubishi Montero (Pajero). They are not popular in the USA and very expensive. But, it's so comfortable for me, I'll spend the cash. Nothing here that's new is that comfortable or robust. It's a big job, but it will be worth it. Just like you're Toyota.

Top tip for checking for cracks, hand the piece by a string and tap it with a small hammer, if it rings no cracks, if its a dull sound cracked.

I can sympathize with you for this situation as I bought a 78 Suburban 4x4 as I needed it immediately for the work I was doing. I then just recently found out by getting information on the build sheet and vin number that the previous owner had done many things that were not correct. I will be starting to correct these issues and am thinking about documenting them on KZbin so others can learn just as you and I have learned about issues with used cars and less than ideal situations. And, yes, my 78 will be a much better vehicle overall than a new one and will ultimately cost less to rebuild into a correct vehicle than buying a new one. The initial pain is there along with the many nights of wondering if I made the correct decision. I agree with your rational that the end product will be worth the initial doubts and financial pain. good job on using reasoning instead of knee-jerk feelings.

In the end there are certain models that are increasing in value. The hj47 ute the hj62 the 80 series in diesel and the 105. Everything that you have done is maintenance and well worth it in the long run. I own a 1982hj47 ute so I know the pain you are feeling when it comes to little surprises.

Marks adapters make a part time 4wd kit for the 80 series and 105s including free wheeling hubs to reduce fuel consumption .Also to reduce wear on the front diff as they were a bit small.

The amount of fuel they save, the LC has to be driven 300 000 kms to pay for it. A pointless mod if ever I saw one.

I think it is a good mod even though fuel saving is not that significant. It prevents wear on the CV joints since they are not driving all the time. Especially necessary when using chromoly CVs since they are expensive and wear faster than the standard CVs. On a vehicle with some lift on it, the front universal joint angles can be quite steep which can cause them to wear quicker and can even give vibrations. But most importantly it gives a way to easily disconnect the whole front axle and keep driving in the event of failure. Whether it be a bent front driveshaft, broken CV, snapped axle shaft, diff failure, etc. Just unlock the hubs and select 2WD and carry on as normal.

I bump started my Peugeot 305 diesel once in first. The engine started but there was also a bang and a smell of gearbox oil. The diff had let go and punched a fist sized hole in the gearbox casing. Never bump start a diesel in a low gear. You need to tow with another vehicle up to a higher speed and use 3rd gear, and be gentle with the clutch.

Thanks Andrew, very good as always. Only one thing popped up in my head. I don't know how exactly this transfer case had been altered nor what drive modes it offers in a LC, I'm a jeep guy, but generaly speaking, if you weld the diff in it, you basically make it part time 4x4 only. So you still have your 2wd, 4H and 4L selections (if it is like this in a LC). The welding process does not make incapable of running in 4H unless something else has been done to it.

In this case, there was no drive to the front prop shaft at all. Nil. Nudda. Bupkiss. The components had been removed, and the ones needed to drive the rear prop shaft, welded so they could.

That looks like a bad part time swap, but it is pretty common to do a part time kit on 80, 105, 100 series cruisers because it drastically improves the handling and MPG.

I disagree. It ruins the handling, especially when towing, and the fuel savings are so small they cannot be accurately measured. The full time 105s are far nicer to drive both on tarmac and gravel. Especially gravel. I consider this mod to be pointless waste of money at the cost of safety.

Well I will agree with you 100% that the full time 4 wheel drive system on mild lift mild size tires is great for gravel or icy road driving and towing. On tarmac the full time 4wd isn't really needed and gives you understeer. Moreover not spinning the front axle components drastically extends the life of axle seals, carrier bearing, bitfield joints, and the front ring & pinion. The main reason toyota put a full time system in the cruiser is to compete with other luxury trucks like Gwagon and range rover because this buyer group doesn't want to get his/her shoes dirty to lock some hubs. At the end of the day this front axle is a blend between a hilux and fj60 axle both of which were part time axles, your just adding unnecessary wear to your drivetrain. Didn't want to rant but this feature was a luxury feature not a safety feature. Love your channel and keep up the great content.

Naaah, usually what happens is CV joint on the front axle gets broken, and full-time TLC becomes immobilized. As it puts the most of the torque to the wheel which has less friction. 105 does not have viscous coupling on the central diff, and if you are out in the middle you have two options - one is to lock the central diff and and second is the same but mechanically. And Toyota is tight enough not to put the center diff switch on stock vehicles. Usually it has full harness coming to the dash but no button to switch it on :)

I'm no expert but my theory of how the whole driveline was broken is, the battery went flat and they pushed the vehicle down a hill backwards forgetting to switch out of 4Lo. They were reversing way to fast for 4Lo in reverse, dumped the clutch and started the engine, this shock loaded the driveline, sheared reverse gear and the transfer case differential and they were left with a running engine and no drive. Their only option was to take apart the transfercase in the field and weld up the center differential allowing them to have rear drive and possibly get home

Just goes to show having a battery booster pack as part of your kit and maintaining it should be a no brainer nowadays considering they are so small and relatively cheap. I keep one in the front seat basket of my truck and I try to make it a ritual to check the charge every time I take it out.

Andrew, If you talk to most if not all mechanics in Australia including Allan from Terrain Taimer & Roothy why we part time 4x4 it - Drives smother. More reliable in more than just one sense. Less maintenances. Less tyre wear. You can engage low range without binding the gearbox on a boat ramp. The list goes on!

Question: I live in the UAE 105 series cruisers are hard to come by, however Y61 patrols are plentiful and bulletproof. Are there any reasons to avoid them as an overland rig? I'm really enjoying the series cant wait for part 2.

I've lived in the UAE for 31 years, grew up there. Patrols are phenomenal vehicles and you should really look into them if you are in the market for an overland rig. The only issue is that they're often treated as either a toy and abused or as a family hauler with not much love and care going into them. I have owned a y61 from new in Abu Dhabi since 2001, have looked after it, and the only thing apart from wear and tear that has broken was the radiator (equal parts large dune in Liwa and my own stupidity) which was easily diagnosed and properly fixed. I drove the car hard and could usually be found offroad on the weekends. My Emirati friends all badger me to sell the car to them (suggesting to pay even 70,000 dirhams for it!!!), as all of their 7-10 year old y61s are on their 2nd or 3rd engines. What I'm saying is that it won't be easy to find a good specimen, but If you do, don't hesitate! Best wishes.

Great build so far. It's going to be nice when complete. I've got a hzj105 Standard, part time with barn doors. I love it but the full time gxl models are definitely surer footed on dirt roads. I generally shift into h4 whenever driving any distance on even good dirt roads so I can pretend I'm not driving a poverty pack cruiser. The only thing I've not seen added at this stage that I suggest is a must have is a digital temp gauge with a sensor under a bolt on the head. 1hz's can get very hot very fast & the dash temp gauge is useless.

It really is important to run through all the 4WD modes when buying a 4X4. IIRC, many LR Freelanders were "converted" to RWD only (often unknown to subsequent purchasers) after owners baulked at paying to replace the fragile "Silly Putty" central diff. Hi there, I am a new integrant in your site and have joined because the very interesting discussion you have. looks to me like the previous owner was looking for better gas mileage. Maybe he could have got 1 more mpg. And with regards the welding, looks to me like a rear diff lock called Lincoln lock, cheap rear diff lock. Maybe i am wrong. So if this is true, this person was trying to improve the traction control. That comes with the Land Cruisers called ATrac. This system works with the brakes and moves the energy to the wheel that is not spining. This guy had permanent and cheap lock diff. When turning over the tarmac both wheels were spiniing at the same time. So i assume the tansmission broke in weakest link. Regards.

No its just a symbole off the gearbox from the 105. i told you before, PUT a 1HD-t in and the H150 gearbox instead of the R151.... after 140.000km he is back in the same problems with the gearbox.

Im converting mine to part time with a marks 4wd kit, due to the fact i have twin lockers and do tough technical tracks for fun, so when something brakes in the front end i can just disengage and drive home, also gives it better road manners, less wear on cv's and front diff. What the gearbox guy said about not selecting H4 must have been low range as they technically are always in H4 there is no H2?? Good too see you in a 105 again mate 😁

It will be interesting to see the final costs. The transfer case on my 75 ute has excessive backlash in high range that I'd like to fix.

If it's a H55F and split transfer, pull it down and check the output splines on the gearbox before they totally strip. From memory you need a 36mm socket for the nut which isn't in most socket sets (something like 32/34mm for the other two). There's a longer transfer input gear available which spreads the load over a longer length of spline but removes the ability to run a PTO. If you let it strip it could ruin the whole transfer.

Billy Flattery b Because they're full time 4wd. If you take the driveshaft out you will go nowhere. You would have to hit the center diff lock button to move. No good if you accidentally turn it off while your driving.

Hang on a sec my 105 has no H2 it is constant 4WD with low and Hi range transfer case. I'm pretty sure the Diesel Manual Box is identical to the 1FZ Box other than the bell housing so they also share the same T-case and Diffs.

Its a not so common mod to remove the transfer case spider gear and weld it up but the rear gear should have been welded to the main carrier which replicates the part time transfer case. Add free wheeling hubs and in the 100 or newer 80 series (older 80's) already have it ,center diff lock switch which now becomes a 2wd/4wd switch. or put in low range will engage the front drive shaft. It can be done for a lot of reasons ie WHEN you break a cv just put in 2wd ,disengage front hubs and drive home with no funny noises and ALOT less wear on the front diff internals.One negative is trucks fitted with abs won't work as the tone wheel is located on the front cv's which are stationary with the hubs "free wheeling" . I have done a few now all with no problems and 10's thousands of kms on them. Just need to be carefull when reassembling the transfer case .Fairly easy and worth while mod.

Andrew, No Hassel but why did they replace the injectors & glow plugs as stated in the beginning of this video please ? we've covered some 543,000 Km with no problem in that way just very good maintenance, Im curious why the replacements after only such low km

Africa, poor quality fuels take their toll on injectors. Four of the six glow-plugs were dead.

There's a lot to be said for running a properly sorted older vehicle like this - distinct lack of fragile electronics, and what is there is usually not going to leave you stranded. I do wonder how a 2020-built 4x4 will be like in 20 years' time! My 17-year old Disco 2 (v8 Auto) is moderately 'electronic' but again, by today's standards, it is incredibly simple. Fuel costs be damned, I'll stick with this for any off-road work for the foreseeable future.

My alternator died on my 80 series 1HZ and I was able to drive 200km to a town on a dead alternator and a flat battery. Try doing that in a vehicle with an ECU

Hi Andrew, it looks like you are mixing up the words permanent 2wd, and part-time 4x4 in this video? I know your opion about the part time 4x4 system conversion (which i still think is not a bad conversion because of wear en tear on the front), but the welding done on this particular part of the transferbox caused the landcruiser to be permanent 2wd right? Love this series cheers mate

The aftermarket part time 4x4 system is where you have to lock the hubs, and lock the center diff to engage 4wd (unlocked is 2wd)? Which doesnt have anything to do with that welded part in your transferbox in my understanding?

For a person with you experience i am amazed how bad of a car you bought yet i was a bad luck dough. And i love that you shattered the Toyota legend. After seeing this i am so glad and i am so proud i never went for Toyota. Yes it it the most reliable car statistically but i find it so complicated.

@@4xoverland i've seen them all. at the end of the day you cosider Toyota the best option and in terms of aftermarket stuff it is the best option. but damn is it a complicated machine. I love my p38 more after seening your series

The suspension layout will remain standard. It's one of the best parts of the 105.

How does this compare price wise with a new land cruiser? Is this older vehicle as rugged as a new land cruiser? Is there a cost savings rebuilding an old vehicle vs buying new. I myself have built many off road vehicles from the frame up and understand the cost and frustration of buying used. I have always preferred restoring older vehicles because they tend to be far more rugged and simple, especially involving ECM and electronics.

Well looking at all the issues you had with bad judgement. I’m puzzled that you think the engine rebuild would be something to count on. Looking at the Mickey Mouse previous repairs, I would be pulling the engine apart to verify the rebuild.

Pull apart and find what? If its okay, then money wasted. We did oil pressure and compression tests and all looks okay. Any more tests are a waste.

My take on old expedition vehicles. So what if you end up overspending? If the vehicle is what you want, then it does not matter. It matters only if you are the sort of person who changes cars every 3 years then the invested money have a actual meaning. If you narrow down your choice of vehicle, to what you WANT then get it and stick with it for 20+ years. I'm on my 12th year with my GD290 and can't see any reason to throw it out in the next decade or so. It only matters if the manufacturer and aftermarket is oriented towards short term support or if quality parts are available for 30+ years. So chose wisely and go with quality repairs, knowing you have a lasting relationship with your expedition vehicle.

Andrew, I think it's an exaggeration. Is a common practice to convert from awd to 2wd together free wheeling hubs to give a lighter driving on the roads. Some reputable parts manufacturers like Ashcroft Transmissions and Syncro Gearboxes make a part that has the side gear with the cross shaft into one, like the welded part you have. Ashcroft and Syncro REALLY know what they are doing.

Full-time 4wd is safer, wears tyres more evenly, is safer, corners far better, especially in the wet, uses no more fuel, and did I mention is safer. Its is a myth that it saves fuel. And the makers of kits feed off this myth. They might make good kit, but there are many, many reasons why it's a bad idea. Ask anyone who has driven both part-time 105s, and full time 105s. The full-time version is far nicer at speed. FAR nicer towing, and uses no more fuel.

@@4xoverland I do agree that AWD is a better choice mainly for safety and I wouldn't go part time, I actually just rebuilt my Defender's TC and added an ATB. But regarding fuel, part time with free hubs does save fuel in city driving (not on a highway) because of the rotational inertia, as the components require energy to accelerate, and require braking force to decelerate. It's like having lighter wheels.

Hey Andrew and everyone. Can anyone tell me or link me a video of where to put a water tank on a Toyota troopy? I'm pretty sure Andrew's green troopy had a 90L tank but I am wondering where would you put that tank? If it's under the vehicle isn't there a problem with ground clearance?

LOL. I like the idea of having another 4WD in another country. We have a 76 series here in NZ and a Troopy in Victoria Australia. Only a few hours travel except ............................ Covid-19 won’t let me get to it. Not only can I not fly there I would have to go into 2 weeks isolation and if I did that they are in lockdown and I without that I couldn’t even get out of the state. Sometimes things just don’t go to plan.

I recently pulled my transfer case apart and did a 2wd conversion myself. Something’s not right with that piece. They welded that gear to the shaft, and that chewed gear is the one that supply’s power to the front shaft. With my conversion kit I removed that center shaft piece and it had two spider gears on it like an open diff looks. So the person who did that conversion was a hack. Nothing to do with the free wheel hubs or 2 wheel conversion kits.

I'm surprised you kept the frankly weak spec R15x gearbox and not just replaced it with the H15x used by all the other manual Landcruisers at the time. All the 80s including those with 1HZ engines and the later VDJ V8s all used H15x series gearboxes. The R15x was basically a supra car gearbox you really need a truck gearbox like the H15x.

Sorry Andrew but it’s a second hand vehicle , bought sight unseen and that means buyer beware , we all hope for a good purchase in those circumstances but it’s not always the case and we don’t have x-ray vision to see into the depths of the most important parts of the mechanicals we rely on the most. Good build so far tho mate and Paul is obviously the man for the job , watching with interest 😎

DIY centre difflock papa.. the freewheel hubs had to be a dead giveaway, knowing that the 'cruiser did not have a centre difflock like a Defender. all the drive would have been lost at the front hubs. Of corse you only saw the front hubs after the puchase ne..?

I reckon someone had driven it on the highway in locked 4wd(cntr diff locked), probably busted the centre diff and cheaped out on fixing it with the part time solution instead of keeping it original.
