I really enjoyed this series Andrew. Buying a second hand 4WD and modifying it for touring is something, I feel, many of us can relate to. There was some real value in learning from you in this instance about caveats and what to be aware of. Kitting out one $100K truck after the next, whilst nice, is not a dilemma most of us have.

Andrew's gobby diatribe at the end is well solid. Leave your Cruiser as the little Japanese men shipped it out of the famous Araco factory in Japan. Their engineers know what is what, and their production quality is, simply astonishing, it is at an entirely different level, really it is. This video promulgates good advice . Many ....perhaps even most Cruiser problems, relate to fixing up some buggering around with it after the vehicle after came out of the factory pristine and perfect.

I don't think I have ever seen a series that gives so much practical and useful information about what to look for when getting a 2nd hand vehicle. This is going to be of use to people for many years to come. I just wish I had seen something like it before I bought my 60 old series - pity there wasn't even KZbin back then. A special thank you to Paul for sharing what is obviously an incredible depth of knowledge about 4x4s. Less is more is certainly true. When we bought our 90, it looked as though it had never been off road in its life. Not a speck of red dust anywhere in even the hardest to reach grooves. It was stock standard and was owned by WA Toursim. It has (to date) been the most reliable vehicle we have owned apart for the rather nasty incident with the LBJ and the loss of a front wheel but that it more of a maintenance issue - now that we know there is a design flaw.

Loved the countdown to start. I live in southwest Florida and have watched many launches from my home 220 km away from Kennedy Space Center. When I moved here in 1980 my first job was at a very old fuel station and one of my regular jobs was pumping water from the bottom of the storage tanks. The old VW van in the background brings back memories too. I had one in the early '80's; I put some mud tires on the drive wheels and it did really well on sand trails here.
@drewc9029
@drewc9029 4 жыл бұрын
FYI, TT and other filter suppliers have been incorrectly listing the 80 series fuel filter for the 100 series. Heck I even had a Toyo dealer fit the wrong one! I couldn't see enough of yours but check your spares. The 80 series is a flat top and the correct 100 series filter is recessed for additional fuel flow. Assuming you have done your trip already, if you got random engine mild asthma attacks under load, check filters. Find an image of a genuine Denso p/n 23390-64480 you will see the difference. Perhaps your guys already spotted this. Love the series on the 100!

I whole heartedly agree with that last nugget of advice. While buying a prebuilt rig is tempting, and it feels like your saving money buy not having to build from scratch. You are often buying some one else's problems, as an already built rig has probably already been through the ringer a time or two.

I agree with your mechanic about having extra filters. Not just fuel, but also air and oil filters. I do suggest that you consider the heavier springs as you will be loading this vehicle down pretty heavy and my experience is that having the extra spring with a full load is often a better choice. I also know that you can over spring a vehicle and cause frame and axle damage so it is a delicate balancing act.

Nice build series 👍🏻 Would be interesting to know the full market price for all those parts and labour used, and compare that to what kind of vehicle you could buy for the higher amount. For the cost of all that 7 days odd of labour and many new parts, someone could buy a much more expensive vehicle for the ‘same’ price. Worth doing here though for a KZbin build series.

In an early episode they talked about the advantages of older vs. newer. One big one was less complexity. Newer vehicles have tons of electronics, sensors and other tech that, while nice when working, take a full blown shop to repair. If you're 800km from the nearest toyota dealer, you don't want some unknown sensor failure to strand you.

I had an oil changing shop service my truck years ago, like 1990ish. The next time I went to change my oil the damn oil drain plug was so tight my wrench rounded the plug. I tried to use a vise grips pliers, it rounded again, and the only thing I could use to get the plug off, and what I had to use after, was a pipe wrench. I eventually got a new plug, but I have NEVER been back to an oil change shop again.

I do all the work on my own land cruiser so I know exactly the condition of the various components in my vehicle. I don’t have to spend a fortune paying a mechanic to work on my vehicle and spend unnecessary money replacing things that don’t really need replacing,with all due respect to Peter who is in my opinion an excellent mechanic. Unfortunately when I purchased my 79 series Ute, I took it in for the first service and when I got it home the dealer had not even changed the filters. Any of them!!! I have done all my own work since then. On another note, I put 600 kilo suspension under mine and I feel that if you are over landing, what you put in the vehicle adds up. Mine is a progressive system and when there is no load the ride feels normal. You just sit a bit higher. That upgraded fuel filter with the glass bowl is one of the best things you can do to monitor your fuel quality. These older 6 cylinder motors are real workhorses and a simpler motor than the v8, perfectly suited to the hard grind expected of them. .

best after being stationary for some time with cold oil, flat surface. modern cars with their thinner weight oils dont take long to drain back to the sump, some dipsticks do have a "hot" oil level mark.

I fully understand that you need a sound vehicle to go into the outback and beyond. Taking a vehicle to these all different people to carry out work on all the things that may go wrong would end up costing a fortune. To the average wage earner it puts things beyond their financial reach. How often do things go wrong on vehicles with something places have worked on and it's failed down the track. I think their is something to be said for buying well maintained older 4wd , learn to do the routine maintenance and if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I couldn't agree more with buying something that is totally stock, it tells the story of an easy life in comparison to something modified which has potentially already been to hell and back.
