You could have tried air layering those 3 branches and ended up with 3 very solid 200$ trees with low branching structure. Would have taken a couple months but for me, very sad to see all that growth go to waste. Just my 2 cents. I'm sure the remaining trunk will survive no problem, happy gardening 🤙.

Hi. my avocado tree has a rather large limb that starts about 6" high. I am trying to achieve the opposite effect that you are here. I want a high canopy, because I am primarily using it as a shade tree. It's only about 6' right now. Would I need to do some aggressive pruning to get it to look like the tree in this video? Thanks!

Have you done a follow up on this tree? I would love to see the progress. I am in New Zealand and am wanting to try to keep my 11 Avos small, so it is interesting to see what you are doing. My trees are young so it will not hurt as much to do this. Also, I do not think we have any risk of sun scald here...the sun is not that intense.

Never cut a fruiting tree you can lose it all together cut when inactive less stressful
@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 5 жыл бұрын
dlhvac1 Hello 👋 Agreed, pruning late winter, before the tree is active is less stressful. However, avocado farmers regularly prune trees immediately following harvest, to control plant size & shape, which depending on the variety could be spring, summer or fall. I’ll keep you posted on the growing & fruiting successes... stay tuned!!! Charles 🌱👍

Well wasn’t expecting that! But look forward to the progress. Have you done this to avocado before? Guess it’s no different then orchards cutting big trees down. My girl friends mom has a bunch of avocados in her yard from an old avocado grove and a few don’t look the best maybe after showing her this video she will finally let me cut them back I keep suggesting it. Cheers

Hello CaseHeads G . This is the 1st time I have severely pruned an avocado, but have done so to many other types of fruit trees! I have been contemplating today going even lower and begin an approach-crown graft with several avocado varieties (3-5 flavors on 1 rootstock). Stay tuned!!! Charles :-)

I don’t know, I have multi trunk avocado trees twenty feet tall. The sun doesn’t hurt them. When the fruit is ready it drops. However when my trees were young they had afternoon shade which is important and means you don’t have to paint

Omg is right I can hear the screams! Okay so how do i get you to come to Florida and help me with my many attempts to grow an avocado tree in zone 9. I have several successfully grafted, Doni, Fuerte, Brogdon, Lila, and Joey. i did myself. Most very young grafts. I do have several others including a 5 foot Lila (Grated) that I am terrified to cut and I had a 15 footer i cut down to 2 feet and it has not rebounded well at all. Seems growth is very slow here so when I hear you talk about growth I wonder what am I doing wrong. I think you could make a great video here and help us in the Zone 9 Florid area. Sad story my father in law who got me started grew a 15 footer from seed as well. He passed before it flowered the very next season, I want to protect that one the most at my mother in laws home close by, she loves the tree but does not know how to take care of it. I wouldn't dare cut it myselfm no courage.. Keep up the videos were watching!!

I live in Northern Ca In Vacaville, Right between Sacramento & San Fran on the I80, I have a Zutano Avacado that's been in the ground 12 yrs now & has always produced good fruit. After cutting off a good 10 ft a few yrs ago it is now again about 20 ft tall.The biggest problem I have is at the graft point it grew out at about a 45 deg angle right into my RV driveway. The graft point is 4 ft off the ground and there are no limbs for the first 7ft 6in from the ground. If I cut the whole thing just above the graft point will it grow back?
@growyourownavocados
@growyourownavocados 8 ай бұрын
I would try prune the branch that is giving you problems. I would not prune near the graft point. I would try to give it at least a yard of growth or even more. What I like about this video here is that they cut high which makes the tree's recovery easy as they explain.

@kurtcooper3699
@kurtcooper3699 4 жыл бұрын
To me it's similar to the way "experts" cut back med/LG crepe myrtle trees. No, it's not a fruit/food bearing tree but to butcher the tree back to the base creating knuckles is not necessary. Trimming back overlapping limbs & a heavier imbalace of weight on one side or limb due to produce is understanding. But, determining that your saving the tree from pest, sun & other natural events in nature make this approach of this avocado suffering from 2-3rd degree burns appear ridiculous. Perhaps it should just be dug up & relocated. Perhaps that's the reason we have the issues we have with certain fruit producing trees. We graft & relocate specific trees not designed to grow in an environment man chooses or transplanted to where they can view it outside there kitchen window. I don't believe outside of these circumstances that God needs u to cut down or butcher His creation so u can save it! Sorry, mankind always thinks he knows best. I've trimmed many trees of various types but never so horrific as to be doing it a favor. The more mankind becomes experts the more we show are ignorance. Oh, have a nice day.
