It's like the gypsies elsewhere, called Sinti and Roma. They deliberately marry off their daughters at a young age (talk about 14 ...) so they are bound in marriage, with little children, before they can develop a mind of their own, and become strong enough to protect their independance. It's a way of imprisoning them. They know it, but feel helpless to do anything about it. If the marriage is unhappy, and they are beaten, they still can't get out, because they have absolutely no education, can't read or write, and wouldn't be able to support themselves (let alone their children) financially. So they remain trapped, and often beaten for their whole life. Others call it culture, I call it oppression.

@john wayne we all have to work unless we win lotto. They can choose their job and go out and see people. The wife has to be a housewife 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All the household chores and child rearing is done by her. She has to have sex when her husband wants her to and pop out babies. There are probably very few penalties for him cheating either or leaving her high and dry if he wants out and domestic violence is common

@john wayne in these cultures women don’t have the choice to have a career. They are raised to be wives and mothers. Also being a wife and mother is work. @john wayne Do you think these people just live in there trailer all day and never have kids? These people have big families with a lot of kids that they then take care of in a freaking RV. I have worked the 12 hour days and I have kids and at least with a job you know there is an end to the day. Being a housewife that is not an option and it is even more true when you have kids until about age 4 the will need you 24 hours a day. That's just the kids the men don't know how to do any of the house hold work they can't even do there own laundry let alone cook, clean and take care of kids all at the same time. I have 4 kids and I love my kids but if you asked be what was easier working long days with an hour drive each way or staying home with my kids working was way easier than staying home with my kids. Also I live in an area in the US that has a lot of Gypsy and Travellers and trust me those guys aren't working that hard most of them are scammers and do a whole lot of construction fraud.

And yet, it's been happening for many centuries, and not just in the traveller community. Many different cultures practice marriage at a very young age, even much younger than 16. You may feel it's wrong, but it's their culture. I'd rather see two 16 year olds marry, then see a 10 year old girl marry an old man! @@amandab8433 A marriage as a teen is way more common in the gypsy communities, but they can work. The couple just has to be committed to each other and have the desire to make it work. I was married at 17 in Texas, where the age of consent was 18, so my parents had to sign for me to get married. My husband was 22 at the time, and a college student. That was almost 36 years ago, and our marriage is stronger now than ever! We only knew each other a total of 7 months before marrying. I knew he was the one for me, and he knew I was the one for him. We are dedicated to each other and to God. That's the key. I hope these youngsters are still going strong, and the little sister is only married if she is ready!

@@julianokleby1448 Congratulations on your wonderful marriage. We will celebrate our 27th wedding anniversary, and our 35 anniversary of being together this April and June. I'm aware of the tradition of teen marriages in the Gypsy/Traveler community. Statistically in the US teen marriages are 48% more likely to end in divorce in the first ten years, as apposed to only 10% for those who marry after the age of 25. The numbers are similar in the UK. I've looked into the success rates of the marriages for the teen couples on these shows, and there is a very high rate of divorce in the first five years. Mostly due to spousal abuse. While the shows are entertaining to watch, and we all hope for the best for the couples, unfortunately most don't end well. Also that most of the young women have no education beyond the 8th grade or high school they end up back with their families, which is wonderful that they have that to fall back on.

I have to agree with kitty tonic, though less in a bad way. I think it's perfect for Them, their style and their personalities. Maybe it's not traditionally elegant, and even what some might call tacky, but by God, they're FUN! To be truly "tacky" you have to take yourself seriously and believe you're not tacky--but these families are enjoying their "tackiness" and having a lot of fun with it, loving the bright colors and attention. They're saying, We're over the Top, we're deliberately tacky and we Love it, this is who we are....and that's amazing and wonderful. Edited to also say, I think it's amazing that the bride and others have no issue with All the women being over the top. No one is whinging about how a bridesmaid or cousin or mom wore a dress that tried to compete with the Bride. Everyone is dressed to the 9's and everyone's loving that with no sense of competition or jealousy. Hell, IMO, more weddings should be like this one! LOL

Not only travellers marry young I married at 16 celebrated our 53 anniversary on Valentine's day. But unlike the travelers I completed my education, went on to university gained a double and had a full career until I retired. My husband was 19 when we married he to went to university h he became a university lecturer. And yes I'd marry him again tomorrow in a heartbeat

My parents were 17 and 21 when they were married. They were together 49 years before my mom passed and had a beautiful marriage. When the divorce rate in America is pushing 60%, age doesn't guarantee a forever marriage, the couple through hard work does. Congrats to you and your husband.

My grandparents met and fell in love when they were fourteen, but they did wait to get married until their twenties. She became a successful chiropractor, and he an engineer. They were married over forty years, and together in general for over fifty. Their marriage has on,y ended because of her death last year…and he still loves her very much. He wears his wedding ring still everyday ❤️

Couldn't help but to giggle when I saw the group of girls in the church wearing the polka dot dresses. Automatically my mind went into the theory that's a gang of rival bridesmaids who didn't make the cut out to claim their spot 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤷🤷🤷🤦🤦🤦

The times I thought I was in love as a teenager and even young twenty something were with people so ill matched to who I am in my thirties… I couldn’t imagine living in a culture where I probably would have jumped at the chance to marry one of those guys at a young age. I would be so unhappy now. Luckily, my parents have always pushed me and my siblings to spend time being single, getting to know ourselves, working on improving ourselves, and living life before getting into a serious relationship. I come from the opposite influence of cultures where people marry young. There was a strong influence to not even seriously date until it least mid twenties.

I got married really young....(19). I will make sure my kids know they have options, and encourage them to get to know themselves before they settle down. Being married as a teenager was really hard. Luckily we worked out, but we definitely are in the minority of young marriages!

I'm older than you and am still figuring out who I am and what I like in others. I can tell a bully from a narcissist and a narc from a psychopath and I've met plenty of them all. I could have ended up married to one as a teenager if I was a traveller because the detection skills at that age wouldn't have been great... Having said that, at least these gypsy girls don't have to worry about age related infertility etc.

I don't think it's necessarily a requirement to be single for a long time before a relationship. Just do whatever feels right, you can still live your life and be young and mature whilst in a relationship.
