My theory is that the mithril is, just like the hammer and the surrounding, an illusion from Annatar. In reality the vial contains Saurons blood. So that everyone who wields one of the nine is literally bound to Sauron by blood. Also: the transition from the illusion to the siege was entirely practical! This makes it even better!!

@@SFzelus Not necessarily. I think for the rings to have powers, they just have to be made with some magical power. Whether that comes from mithril or the blood of a godlike beeing. The one ring for example is, to my knowledge, just gold. Made a ring of power by Saurons essence. Edit: come to think of it, the original Silmarils were perhaps so "magical" because they literally contained the light of creation...

The worst thing about Celebrimbor forgetting the name of his smith, Mirdania, is that she is literally named after the Elven Smiths that he is the head of! The Gwaith-i-Mirdain, the "People of the Jewel Smiths" is the name of the people of Ost-in-Edhil, the capital of Eregion, according to Tolkien! So that should give you some conception of how warped by Sauron his mind is becomming. "What are you doing to this poor man?" Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss. We see it all in this episode. Gaslights Celebrimbor about his hammer. Gatekeeps him from the people of Eregion. And Girlbosses his way to getting the Nine made by using magic to fake that there isn't a siege alarm going off. Adar and his army aren't cutting off the Mithril deliveries from Khazad-dum. They are encircling Ost-in-Edhil, the main city of Eregion, across the river Sirannon, to the West. They are between Eregion and Lindon. Khazad-dum is to the East, in the Misty Mountains. I'm sure there's some path up through the cliffs to get to the High Road to the Doors of Durin, given that - of course - we see Annatar in Khazad-dum just a bit later. But the reason the dwarves are not sending the Mithril is that the Ring is working a little too well on King Durin III: he's becoming too greedy, and so he's cutting off the supply to hoarde it. Friendly reminder that Balrogs are the same thing as Sauron - they're corrupted Maiar who fell into the service of Morgoth. They just fell... much further than Sauron did. The Balrogs - there were anywhere between 3 and 7 of them known of in the Legendarium - dwelled with Morgoth at his fortress of Utumno until the Valar defeated him in the Battle of the Powers before the awakening of Elves or Men. They fled the destruction of Utumno, and began to hibernate beneath the mountain of Angband. When Morgoth destroyed the Two Trees of Valinor and stole the Silmarils, kickstarting the events of the First Age, he fled to Middle-Earth with his conspirator and collaborator - Ungoliant, the primordial demon spider mother of Shelob. She grew ravenous from the succor of the trees, and tried to eat Morgoth himself. His cry of anger and pain was so loud, it summoned the Balrogs to him: and they drove Ungoliant off into the wilderness. They fought for Morgoth throughout the First Age, and were among his most terrible and feared servants. Only one is known to have survived the War of Wrath, when the Valar and their armies came to the aid of Elves and Men against Morgoth, and finally defeated him - at the cost of destroying a full third of the continent Middle-Earth sits upon. And that sole known survivor is the Balrog of Moria. So when Sauron sees the Balrog's likeness in the torch while speaking with the Durins, and he smirks as he leaves, it's almost certainly because he knows as they keep going deeper, they're going to find something they absolutely cannot ever hope to stop. Just as the Great Eagles are the servants of Manwe Sulimo, the Lord of the Valar and Lord of the Winds and Airs, I think we have to assume that the Sea Worm is a servant of Ulmo, the Lord of Waters. That creature fully examined Miriel, and then not only refused to eat her, it put her back ashore right in front of the crowd in a way that cannot be interpreted as anything but marking her as innocent of all crimes laid at her feet, including Treason against Pharazon. The previous times we've seen it, it was attacking the ship and the raft that Sauron was on, and being prevented from eating him because it got tangled and snarled in the rigging of the sinking ship. There is very little doubt in my mind now that that Sea Worm was specifically sent after that ship, and the raft, because the Valar knew Sauron was aboard. "I hope some fate befalls him and his son that's just a little bit worse than the entire city plunging into the ocean." Well, since Kemen, the son, is an original character for the show I can't tell you that one, but I can promise you Pharazon's fate is very well deserved. I think you're exactly right, Omni, about his blood being what binds the Nine. Remember: "Only blood can bind," as the show said itself just a couple episodes ago. Sauron came back from Khazad-dum with no Mithril, and now - suddenly - in this fun little dream state he's enchanted up for Celebrimbor, he's got plenty of Mithril to give him? I'm pretty sure the Nine are being implied to be made of an alloy built on Sauron's blood, hence their overwhelming power to corrupt and dominate. There's no mithril at all in their creation. Fun fact: that day-to-night shot transfer where Sauron lets the illusion drop was apparently done entirely in camera, which is just some of the most impressive technical filmmaking I've seen in awhile. To your question about the Stoors and what's going to happen to them - if they'll join up with the Harfoots - there's three main types of Halfling in Tolkien's Legendarium. Fallowhides and Harfoots are the two main inhabitants of the Shire, and the Stoors tend to live near the Great River when we know them in the Third Age. But the fact they're calling their cave-holds "smials" is definitely significant: as that's the name of some Hobbit hole home types in the Shire in the time of The Lord of the Rings. Your connection to Erebor and its hoarding of wealth eventually attracting Smaug is more apt than you realize, I think! Thorin's grandfather, Thor, the King Under the Mountain when Smaug arrives - who had amassed such treasure that it lured a dragon wore the last of the Seven Dwarf Rings still at large in the world about 3,000 years later. He left it to his son, Thror, before he went into battle against Azog the Defiler and the Orcs of Moria - where he lost his life. And Thror wore the ring until his death in the dungeons of Dol Guldur, the Hill of Sorcery, where the Ring was then claimed by The Necromancer - who, of course, was Sauron disguising himself to rebuild power during the time of "The Hobbit." And, in fact, according to Tolkien - it's the exact same ring that King Durin III is wearing in this series. The first of the Seven to be forged, and the last of the Seven to be accounted for.

Re the ‘powdered mithril’ vial that Sauron gave Celebrimbor, I saw a comment on another vid that suggested it could be a vial of his blood from the cut on his hand? Because it was during the vision scene that Sauron gave it to him (Celebrimbor) so it may not be as it appears. And blood going into the nine would tie nicely in with the ‘to bind them all’ part because as has been said in this show previously “only blood will bind” ! Also; the scene where it’s focused on Sauron and it transitions from the daytime vision back to the nighttime siege reality- this effect was actually achieved in person! I a short clip of it on twitter but I think it might be in the behind the scenes video prime put out for this ep, I watched it so many times.

I don't remember if I left it in, but I know I mentioned what if it's his blood they use to complete the rings and then I thought maybe it was just to conjure that illusion but that makes so much more sense if he also tricked Celebrimbor into unknowingly using his blood instead!

I have seen a lot of people think that the mithril is made of Sauron’s blood. And I think that makes a lot of sense. Remember “only blood can bind.” But I really like this additional idea that Sauron could have gathered up the mithril from the floor and the failed trials to make rings, and then mixed it with his blood. It gives him something tangible to work with.

The rings must have mithril, so perhaps he did steal some from the dwarves, he was already there, he could have easily manipulated any of the dwarves to get him some, it is unclear why he has to cut his hands while he was in the tower…

I think Earien’s character got a little bit shafted by the editors, who apparently cut a lot of her more sympathetic scenes from both S1 and S2. Still, look at things from her perspective- her mom drowned, one brother ran away, the other one apparently died, old friend killed in an altercation being blamed on her father, and her dad, a religious zealot, refuses to talk to her about any of it, and the only person he WILL listen to is the disgraced Queen. It was easy for Pharazon to swoop in and manipulate her! It gives Elendil’s character an interesting flaw, that he struggles so deeply to connect with his family, despite how much he loves them.

I think it was another really good episode. I think the “Stranger” will choose to save his friends. And maybe there will be something in his actions that leads to him getting the staff he needs anyway. Otherwise, the show’s use of that famous Gandalf quote by Tom about one not deciding who deserves life and who deserves death is being twisted to mean the “Stranger” should abandon his friends.
