This is just crazy, when I saw the thumbnail I was thinking that it’s just photoshopped. I can only say that this build/conversion is very impressive. Using a metal case looks really good. And then the inside wiring and soldering you’ve got some very good soldering skills. All in all a very interesting video.

Yes, it is real radio. I just hope that others will inspire and build better quality radio, or if Quansheng start producing such kind radios.

This is an AMAZING Hack 😮👍 Very clever keyboard design and the encoder is fantastic ! The interior layout is mind blowing !! I can't believe how much work you put into this 😮 It reminds me of the time I hacked a 1999 Ericsson GSM phone into an old office phone case. I used gray PC flex cable too, but it's horrible stuff, hardly any wire cores and the plastic melts really easily. A blob of hot glue makes a good LED light guide/diffuser. I absolutely LOVE Hacks like this 👍 BRAVO !

That is some very fine hand work, but instead of drilling, grinding and filing faceplates for my gadgets, I bought a 2-axis milling machine work table for my drill press. I workout all the dimensions and moves on a spreadsheet and convert them into number of turns on the handles, and I use drills for the holes and end mills for the squares and slotted holes. When I account for backlash properly, I get CNC quality results. I use project enclosures that have removable faceplates that I replace with double sided PCBs, which are easy to mount and machine, and I finish them with a chemical tin plating.

Perfect! I would love to know operate CNC machine. Good job! 👍

Great build.👍👍👍👍 Next gen, a bigger keypad, so a new tactile switch assembly would be needed. Bigger volume control and spread out a bit more. It's not a H/H anymore so I don't need to hold my pinky finger out to adjust the sound and bigger speaker. I would worry about 2 x LM78 series volt regs in parallel, I don't think it is recommended with respect to load balance. If one reg is 8.01V and the other 7.9V then the 8.01 will be under the most, if not all, the current load. I'd use one 78xx and bolt it to the chassis. I know this is in hindsight, so take it as constructive thoughts. The encoder addition is probably the best feature that makes this H/H so much easier to drive.

Very good! I love this radio too. I thought in add a low pass filter HF band and an amplifier with low requeriment of input (5 Dbm, miliwatts) to use this radio on HF to transmit. With the filter we dont have harmonics and the output can excite a little amplifier. Maybe i am dreaming here. It´s not FCC aproved to do this, but i will like to tested something in this direction with a dummy load. Thanks! 73
