i dont think this is going to go the same way the game did. sunny's more... alive. in game a character trait of his is that hes constantly dissassocitating, his sense of reality is messed up, and he just wants to go back to sleep. to the point that he dreamt of an entire adventure while out with his friends, and we dont know if he did that consciously seeing him actually interact with his environment without being asked to, this is définitely going to be a plot point later other things that changed: Aubrey hit basil and he didnt even cry, in game he was just crying from fear. this was used to prove basil is incredibly unstable on the daily in the manga aubrey says "we couldnt save mari", adding onto the 2 hints we got in the game that mari did give off bad vibes sunny CONSCIOUSLY tries stabbing aubrey, with camera angles showing he aimed for the head. ingame it was just a slash that kel managed to forget omori tells sunny "You have been living here for as long as you can remember". in game it was just a genuine thought from sunny forgetting, as is normal when dreaming ...someone had to tell me that the hooligans arent there.

Same. Could just be wistful thinking, but I would like it if this slightly different setup ends up leading to brand new moments with these characters to flesh them out in ways that the game didn't, and maybe even provide new surprises for fans of the story (since it already shows the violin and spoils Mari's death far earlier). Besides, you could easily replace a bunch of the Headspace content with different stuff that shows different sides of Sunny's psyche that the game didn't focus on (personally hoping that the scrapped anime school location ends up coming back but hey, a man can dream)

I mostly got 2 issues with the manga. One is that Sunny leaving his house didn't feel like a big revelation since its literally the first thing he does in this manga. It doesnt feel like he hasnt left the house in 4 years, especially with how casually he hangs out with Kel. Second is that Sunny attacking Aubrey didn't make much sense with the context given. In the game, it's implied that he did it because he had a hard time distinguishing the real world and headspace because the fights were shown in a game format, so he saw fighting Aubrey as any other fight in headspace and didn’t think of the consequences of seriously injuring her.

Not really. The manga serves more of a secondary canon to the game, not a primary canon. The game already shows Sunny being mostly emotionless (doesn't feel emotions outside of hallucinations and a fly segment, can't feel emotions above tier 1, can't feel happy, neutral expression is literally identical to omori's, sunny's emotion a minute after Aubrey says that Mari dies is quite literally neutral.) I doubt the manga is even canonical. You have things happening in it that never happened in the game. Why is Aubrey even carrying the pictures on her, why is Sunny going to try and stab Aubrey, why is he entering into a panic attack, why is he entering white space?

I honestly went into the manga expecting a decent amount of headspace stuff to get cut, but I do wish they at least showed the very first tutorial section with the photo album and Basil's plants and all that. Even without all the time spent in Otherworld I think that section does a really good job of introducing the characters and would be enough to make the whole scene with Aubrey hit harder. I'm still optimistic that people who are already fans of OMORI could enjoy this as new content but just because of this beginning I definitely think I'd recommend people play the game first before reading the manga. I think the experience of leaving the house for the first time and discovering what the real world in OMORI is like, along with finding out how much things have changed for everyone would be lessened a bit if you had already read this first chapter. It was interesting to see something somewhat new with the Christmas scene at the very beginning though and I'm definitely curious to see exactly where they go with the story from here.

One thing I hope the manga does is expand on a lot of moments not shown in the game but had a noticeable impact on the characters like Hero's outburst on Kel, Sunny smearing the photos, Sunny and Mari's whole argument, Aubrey's coping, Sunny's dad leaving It could make the manga more worthwhile to read and the storytelling format of manga as a whole means that it could easily show these moments and they'd rarely feel out of place and remove immersion from the reader
@joshhart43675 ай бұрын
Aubrey was troubled in the game due to abandonment and grief. She wasn't a senseless psychopath as depicted here however, if she ever actually seriously harmed someone it was always by accident due to a fit of anger. The OG story was pretty good not because of the old 'Happy and childlike to horrific and eerie' trope but more so because of it's twist being able to convey how Sunny found refuge and fulfillment with his real friends latter to Mari's death, and how his character arc centered around leaving his coping mechanism behind him. What it conveyed was that whether his friends forgave him or not was not the relevant matter, but what mattered was accepting what he did happened and there's no going back, and that he could still make peace with himself regardless. His motionless, stagnant face was actually very important to his personality set. It was emphasized in lost library that he already had a tendency towards maladaptive daydreaming and later with the events surrounding Mari turning it from a normal quirk to a harmful coping mechanism - showing that when pitted with guilt and grief our traits become more exaggerated. Kel's lighthearted dense behavior being exaggerated, Aubrey's troubled anger issues being exaggerated, Hero's love for Mari became an inability to let go, etc. By making him more emotionally expressive in the manga you have essentially butchered the entire plot and his character is all over the place. Do they want him to be emotional and distressed? Do they want him to be monotone expressional? Do they want him to be a psychopath? I don't even know there for how am I supposed to grow attached or empathetic to these characters? That is my conclusion when it comes to the Omori manga. Why am I supposed to care, when the original arcs that made me root for these characters have been slaughtered? Sure the art is good, but good manga art is meaningless when the story is worthless. I'd rather a manga with a great story and poorly drawn new grounds art rather than vice versa. The manga is inferior to the game in just about every meaningful way. If you want to enjoy Omori, play the game. Edit: You can add to the original plot to expand it and give new perspectives, but first you need to respect the source material. That is rule of adaptations, including marvel comics. Like how Sam Raimi thought of the organic web-shooters but the plot was still respected.

Imo They made Aubrey incredibly horrible. She says a lot of hurtful things with such a straight face that I doubt she should have any excuses to say she didn't mean it later in the manga. And seeing her hit Basil seems too far because she only seemed to call him names in the game. And the fact thats how we see her the first time in the manga just takes away the shocking feeling of seeing a old friend become mean after not knowing what happened. She's just a jerk who we're introduced to extremely fast.

My headcannon is that Manga Aubrey spent the last 4 years planning that speech just in case she ever saw Sunny again. It doesn't really fix her character, but it's funny to believe that she pictured a vine boom sound effect after every sentence
@ElIisL4D26 ай бұрын
I'll always disagree with Sunny having more emotions until the day I die. Sunny is MEANT to not be emotional, he's meant to be a stoic person whos emotions are always just blank. In the game, the only time he gets emotions... are during hallucinations, or a specific fly segment. Said fly segment goes to really only show his anger issues to begin with. It doesn't exactly help that Sunny can't even feel emotions above tier 1, let alone even feel happy. Him being afraid at literally everything doesn't make sense. Especially the whole "panicking over Mari" thing, because a minute after Aubrey says that Mari died in the game, his face is completely blank. Why is he going into a panic attack?
@viniciusgoulart50776 ай бұрын
Imo it would be fine if he showed a bit of emotion in the manga besides 100% neutrality all the time (a very slight smile when he finds Kel's shenaningans funny, slightly wider eyes when surprised, etc). He shows emotions in game when Kel and Hero hug him by the treehouse and when he uses certain items in Faraway, so he can show them to an extent But I agree that the manga goes too far, he's just very afraid or very surprised all the time

Stoic doesn´t mean emotionless, he is quite the opposite to an stoic person, he was a hikikomori for 4 years, while being in fantasy land, while being the murderer of his big sis while doing a heinous act to cover himself. But yes I agree, in game the point is that he is so traumatized by the accident and his actions that he can´t show emotion in his face 90% of the time, while not speaking if he isn´t asked or is 100% neccesary, he is (like Basil) a time bomb made of anxiety, fear and trauma.

I'd like to express my opinion on the character exaggeration, actually. I think it's kind of ok that Kel drags Sunny around instead of Sunny going to the store himself, since he probably wouldn't really want to anyway...but the AUBREY characterization? Hurts a bit. I assumed Aubrey never attacked with the bat in game because she didn't want to hurt her former friends, but put up an aggressive facade instead. Here she's just really evil???? Using the bat to beat people up also undercuts Sunny's use of a knife...it doesn't sit right with me.

"evil" is an understatement, tbh. they turned her into a complete edgy anime antagonist all i hope here is that the character exaggerations and choppy pacing were intended because the manga takes place after a failed sunny route (sunny didn't answer the door for kel on the second day) and this is all headspace

It’s implied in certain battles that she does use the bat a few times, it’s just that it’s weirdly not her strongest attack, which is her headbutt. It's too early to decide my feelings but I do feel that it's had a bit of a weak start. I also have mixed feelings about the artstyle. All the characters look wirey and thin and Sunny's malnourishment or Kel being athletic isn’t communicated at all. The manga will need to make radical changes to make it work in a manga format so I am open to changes but don't like the execution so far. Since it needs a hook, I think it should have started with the Basil and Sunny flashbacks we get whenever we go back to Whitespace. Have the reader get hooked on figuring out what's happening there rather than what the manga did which I feel is more confusing than anything else.

When Kel tells Sunny he's glad to see that he hasn't changed that much, Sunny just gives him this look of disapproval in that sentence. "Now that's just an unnecessary deep cut. True, but still." And right below it where Kel proposes the idea that they can all have a sleepover at Sunny's place, Sunny gives his attention to the floor and gives a somber, yet nervous expression. Like he's reflecting on better times that he wishes he could go back to but is worried about...something. Not the entity Something, just something in general The artist did a good job on giving the silent Sunny a voice not through his thoughts, but his expressions and I am all for it

It's possible they rearranged it to get the "hook" earlier in the story, since people might not read more than the first chapter otherwise. Also possible that they don't have that many chapters to span the story across. Definitely less confusing than the Yume Nikki manga so far though.
@Mordecai024 ай бұрын
Really they could probably do it in like 8-10 chapters and still keep the pacing good if they just dedicated 1-2 chapters to each game chapter

I agree with most of your points! I ended up making my own video about how it felt somewhat disappointing earlier. The restructuring alters characterization and gives us so much information in the first chapter which probably makes this really confusing to new readers.

i do think people are being really harsh way too early when it's only been one chapter, though i did personally feel like the pacing was way too fast. like you said, them going immediately into the sunny + aubrey fight scene was weird because people who haven't played the game have no reason to care about these characters yet one of the official twitter accounts did say the manga was meant to be for new and old fans alike, but imo old fans are getting mad at how it isn't a 1:1 adaptation, while it seems like they expected new fans to get immediately attached to the characters without really giving them any reason to be since there was no build-up personally i'm hoping they're doing an alt version of the story and that the pacing/plot/characterisation differences will make sense later due to that

Maybe, but then again if the artist/writer fails to deliver the story and characters well in the first chapter, it is usually an indicator of issues that will be persistent over the whole telling of the story. Sometimes good stories start out weak, so yeah there's still a chance for this manga to improve in its storytelling. But personally, this first chapter has me a little worried about how the rest of the manga is going to go...

Personally, the problem I have with the manga is just how little we know about the characters in the beginning. We just get introduced to them in rapid succession and we don’t really get to see what they are like before all the action and other stuff happens. To me, I think if we get more chapters and better pacing we could probably slide past the rough beginning. We just gotta keep that hope and have faith in the manga! ^^

Honestly, yall can say i have low expectations, in fact i agree, but the manga is just fine. The art is good, the behaviour of the characters is just fine. Sure, the manga doesn't fully follow plot points in the game, like sunny's reluctance to go outside for example, but stuff like that is only a problem if you haven't played the game. Like, i would much rather sunny just get to the goddamn point and go outside already instead of the first 12 chapters being just headspace. It was good enough to entertain me while reading it. And, unpopular opinion? Sunny's expressiveness? Honestly, i like it. It's good. It's good! I actually really like it, sue me!

As someone who adores the games story and how moments are put in the perfect spot for your reaction, I heavily dislike that they showed us Faraway town first. Mari being dead, Aubrey's entire personality change, and everything with Basil is such a huge whiplash on the player. They're great reveals. I feel this manga is intended for those who have already experienced Omori. We know what happens, so they can show those events to us in a different way. It's interesting, but not as powerful in my opinion. What I did like from this change is when he slashes Aubrey and gets pulled into white space immediately to disassociate from what he's just done. I also really enjoyed the horror. I think the very beginning with the violin was a great opener without revealing too much, and then the Faraway stuff happened instantly and I went "Um... okay." I enjoy changes and I'm still gonna love this manga. I just feel that this choice kind of removed elements of what made Omori so hard hitting to begin with. It's too early to say, though. It's only chapter 1, and I'm excited for more.

I’m slightly worried but also interested. Most people who read the manga have already played the game and the original story doesn’t have much replay value imo, so a 1-1 recreation wouldn’t work. I’m slightly offset by the headspace stuff coming at the end not the beginning, it means the Aubrey and Mari reveals don’t hit as hard if you consider the manga on its own. We barely know what Mari was like, don’t particularly care about her so the reveal is shocking but not impactful. Same for Aubrey, in the original game there’s a huge contrast, but as we meet real Aubrey before headspace Aubrey there’s nothing to compare. I’m hoping this is a reimagining/adaptation more than a direct retelling, which this change in the order of events hopefully supports (or just bad writing but hopefully not). Also I’m loving the art style mostly, just hope real world characters look a bit older in future issues (especially Kel)

A major reason for the fast pacing in my opinion is that Sunny is a silent protagonist, for me the pacing felt normal when other characters were around since there was stuff to read.
@dudepersonbroguy6 ай бұрын
I think the manga is probably hoping to gain new fans who will only read the manga. With that in mind this first chapter makes for a great hook. If the manga started the same as the game it would be a pretty boring first chapter. It would just be a little white space, meeting the cast, hide and seek, and then probably end with the Boss fight. MAYBE if they sped it up they could've ended with Basil finding Mari's picture and freaking out but that would probably make it feel too rushed. From the perspective of someone who's played the game that sounds like a great first chapter, but someone who hasn't played the game will think it's boring. Like it's just a bunch of kids playing tag and fighting some weird creature what is the point? Plus the manga is monthly. People probably won't care to wait for more. On the other hand the chapter we got is much more exciting as a hook. New readers have a lot of questions and want to learn more. SO tldr; this chapter seems all over the place to us game players, but assuming it's geared towards new fans who haven't played the game it's a good hook. If I'm right with that assumption it's kind of a shame they're doing it that way but oh well. I hope they add new content and stuff to go along with that so us game players can be happy too. Also hope they don't skip too much headspace🙏

ok it could definitely be better but most of this is paced like how it is because its just an intro chapter trying to hook in new readers and chapter 2 or 3 will probably be more slow as for the changes omocat tweeted at one point she wanted the manga to be enjoyable to people who didnt play the game as well as older fans so she might be changing a lot about the story so its not just a recap for people who already played the game sunny is more emotional here where in the game he seemed to be a brick in the faraway town segments which was because he was suppressing everything, so maybe hes dealing with her death in a different way this time? aubrey is actively aggressive towards basil in the manga where as in the game its mostly just the other kids in the holigans and in town following along with what she started, so maybe it was more than just the photo album this time? what most interested me is that during the stab scene you can see omoris reflection in the knife blade and the background looks similar to white space implying omori is directly taking control of sunny as some kind of panic response where as in the game he stabs her because he was delusional from being in headspace for so long where stabbing enemies was no big deal

Tbh I didn't hate it, and speeding up the pacing is kind of needed at least a little bit bc of how much filler stuff exists in the game for the purpose of gameplay. Like depending on how fast you play the game it can take almost an hour just to get to the steak cooking part, let alone see the other characters. But I still wish we got to see SOME headspace first. I was expecting something like a little white space --> headspace like normal --> probably skip the fight with boss and the sprout moles bc thats mostly a tutorial for fighting in game --> basils garden since it introduces the characters well --> photo jumpscare --> reveal to new readers that this is all a dream by showing sunny getting up and eating the steak-- for the first chapter. Its not perfect at all and i doubt it would even fit into a chapter but it give readers a hook (kinda) through the jumpscare and also still showing sunny is the main character (not as interesting as a fight though to be fair). But theres nothing wroang with what we got in my opinion lol. The horror parts were really cool and hopefully the whole pacing thing will redeem itself by changing the story organization to fit. I don't mind the art too much (they did seem rlly young in some panels, and I feel like omocats style fit the story better, but still) also justice for hooligans they had no right to just erase them from that scene :(

Chapter 1 feels like the start of a fanfiction, not a proper adaptation. Granted, it is almost certainly made for those who have played the game first, but it just makes it an odd read. It does give me hope for what's to come though, since assuming the reader has familiarity should hopefully lead to a much more in depth examination of the characters than if it had to reestablish them completely.
@sansgaming6076 ай бұрын
the thing about adaptations is that they should always serve as alternative ways to experience a story. i mean, Lord of the Rings (both the movie adaptation and the books) are both perfectly valid ways to experience the universe, as a good example. however, there's like a gazillion things in the manga that don't make sense for someone who hasn't beaten the game. and likewise, there's a bazillion things that don't make sense for people who HAVE beaten the game. it's a lil weird, still not entirely sure what to think...

After a bit of thinking on the manga, i think the pacing would be more ok and fixed if they reversed the order of dream and real world parts. showing omori first or : Nightmare with mari -> Omori telling sunny -> omori and adventures -> then real world. and end up the chapter with sunny collapsing would have been better paced. specially if the first chapter is a pilot chapter, just in case. That also would shock the readers and give a more accurate feeling to the the initial impresison of omori, since the dream part comes first. But idk. Chapter 2 could reveal a different path, or backtrack to the very start, idk. [SPOILER SECTION HERE] [SPOILER SECTION HERE] Because idk, would the dream portions of omori be focused for manga adaptation, or the story only? Because the story is omori being sunny's dissasociated persona to try to deal with the trauma, the adaptation's focus would be telling sunny's story, not the dream world and the adventures. Would it be interesting if dream world plots were told? idk. I think the manga suffers from the expectation that people would only glance it by 2 pages only and move on, and see the cute drawings and misunderstand it. When it could have build up a bit the real world portion later and made more of a shock. idk. Sorry for bad grammar, im not in the mood to think other than expressing somewhat my thoughts rn.

I would treat the manga like it's own separate canon, I'm more interested in seeing what they can add to it than have it perfectly adapted from the game as long as it's not dog water. Honestly, I don't mind expressive sunny. He wasn't entirely emotionless in the game, other characters could sense when he's angry or otherwise. Besides being depressed deeply traumatized doesn't mean blank, sunny has strong opinions about things and we see it through white space adventures , he has a colorfull personality underneath it all. Infact you don't tell that easily when someone's dealing with something so I wouldn't mind such an approach at all even if it's different. his giant flaw would not be absolute neutrality ,it's his perception of reality, he should NOT see it for what it is and his fictions would slip into it more often than not. What I'm worried about is over villainization of aubery. She's a victim too so don't paint her as an edgy antagonist. And god, justice for Kel's muscles

If changes were to be made to the storyline to fit the format of a manga, Why couldnt Omocat give it to a writer / mangaka who Actually understood the source material?? People keep saying that "We should be grateful that we have an Omori manga!" But how can you be grateful for something that left you disappointed and longing for more? The Omori game has Questionable writing already and the official manga potentially made it worse cause it was written by the wrong author.

@NoNameMike5 ай бұрын
I knew this manga wasnt gonna work out the moment i saw it announced. Omori started out as a webcomic but then was made into a game because omocat felt that the webcomic format was too limited for what type of story she was trying to convey. Some criticism for the manga is that the characters are too expressive, especially sunny. In the game sunny has emotions, a lot of them but he mostly had a neutral look because after the 3 years of what happened to mari he became disillusioned and he mixes together the real world and head space, and in head space he is omori, someone who has a blank expression at all times. Him slashing aubrey should've been illustrated as him more so non-chalontly just trying to stab aubrey before he gets snapped into the fact that hes in the real world and that he just tried to kill his friend. Then he can show some expression, kind of as a fact that he gets snapped out from playing the character of omori and returning to who he actually is, sunny. The pacing is also not good as youve mentioned because in the game we had time to let these characters grow on us in head space then to find them in the real world and what has happened to them over the years actually has meaning because we already know what these characters are supposed to be like. I think turning omori into a manga was a bad idea from the get-go and it not turning out the same quality as the game is nothing surprising to me.
