Nice, I like the idea of running irregular clocks through a divider. And I have heard you say it before, but I forget about the one sample delay per module... Need to keep that one in my mind. Great examples as always.

that 1 sample delay when u are using a clock divider (9:30) is caused bc of the clock divider or the use of several modules? because with the Bernoulli Gate u are not using any mult btw love this video, i started few days ago with the modular synthesis :)
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, because of the use of several modules. Each module will add a 1ms of delay so sometimes triggers will reach their destinations at different times which might cause issues. It's nothing to be concerned about, most of the time, but it's useful to know. Cheers!

Very helpful. Thanks for making this. Couple questions. Is it possible to add varying gate lengths and accents? Making the melody / rhythm more expressive?
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers! And yes, you can use something like DGate from BogAudio and modulate\sequence the gate length. For accents, you can use an additional VCA, or a filter, or both, and modulate\sequence them for adding accents.

I haven't used the comparator approach yet, but it's something I'll try. I like using bernoulli switches to control gates a lot. I also like adding chord changes using re-win scenes which gives a sense of controlled movement. Even if you run the voices from a sequence, messing with the gates through Bernoulli switches and tailoring the envelopes, you can get some nice effects and some order within the chaos. I used this last week for a patch called SpaceFilters: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fZ2Zo2melMaIe9k that I used as the backing for the track Spacewave: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Zl7NmqJtqrOHrMU

The last stage of your clock divider section is driving me up the wall trying to figure it out. VCV's 4-input mixer, its delay panel and SEQ-3 sequencer got updated at some point and now look different and possibly have different outputs. i don't know if the SEQ 3 not having a Gate output is the cause, but i've tried setting absolutely everything else as close as i can in that section and all i get is a squelchy, toneless mess and can't figure out what the cause is.
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, this might be confusing since everything looks different. Actually, you're right, the SEQ3, by default, will not output gates, but you can change this in the right click menu by choosing to pass through the clock. Is this solving the issue? Feel free to email me also, and I will try to help you with this.

@@OmriCohen-Music I think that clock passthrough made a difference? It looks like i made a dog's breakfast out of it, i came back to load it up and i can see I tried running it through 3 other modules to have it punch out 8 note sequences of notes instead of the constant bass notes you ended up with. I reckon I'll put that one down and move onto the next chapter before I give myself a migraine again lol

Wait, what was making the length of Phrase Seq change like that in the comparator example?
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 4 жыл бұрын
Well, the PhraseSeq has a song mode that allows you to chain phrases so there's one phrase with a different length. It's quite a deep sequencer and can be super interesting to work with.

I'd previously only come across Bernoulli in the context of fluid dynamics. I presume in this context it's more to do with his work in random probabilities. As I'm interested in more ambient type stuff I like the association with fluid movement.
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 4 жыл бұрын
That's a nice idea, music as a fluid...
@ZetaCarinae
@ZetaCarinae 4 жыл бұрын
The fluid Bernoulli is Daniel, who was the nephew of Jacob Bernoulli. Jacob wrote one of the first books on probability, the Ars Conjectandi, so the Bernoulli gate used here is named after him.
@BallroomJam
@BallroomJam 4 жыл бұрын
@@ZetaCarinae Aah. Thank you. That makes sense. They don't seem directly related areas of study. I studied electronic engineering and fluid dynamics was one of our general engineering subjects. The probability Bernoulli I only came across after googling when I watched this KZbin programme. Thanks for the history!

I understand that this video is about more broad definition of "Genretative Rythms" but after watching videos with VCV tracks on yt for a while, i feel like a lot of people missing out on Seeds of Change module. How you can create generative random sequences of melodies, gates or trigs, and then loop it. Plus it is already have attenuverters and CVs on every output and expanders with even more outputs. This module have been heart of so many patches, but I didn't realy have seen any big VCV creators talk about it. It is not like Frozen Wasteland is small obscure collection and i just don't understand why. Sorry, just needed to vent!

you have become the official vcv guru and i’m really interested in watching your videos, but recently i don’t, because the videos are simply too long! to me 10 to 15 min is the limit, unless i’m really into something. more than 20 min is a very rare thing to me. normally i’m watching youtube videos at night and long ones i just leave untouched. if i was you, i would cut the videos into shorter episodes. i’m quite sure, that you would get more audience this way.
@OmriCohen-Music

Hey, thanks so much for your feedback! I have to be honest, I also have difficulties watching long videos. I have so many still in my 'watch later' playlist I just can't seem to find time for. That said, I'm not so sure how I can shorten my videos, there's so much to go through. From experience, having multiple episodes is not working so well. But still, I will see if there's something I can do in the future.

Interesting, but not "generative". Nothing is being "generated" here. It doesn't go anywhere in any particular direction. It is just eternal slightly constrained randomness. Which is not "generation".
@AB-wf8ek
@AB-wf8ek 10 ай бұрын
Generative in the context of music usually means constantly changing, infinite permutations, evolving, never exactly the same. Steven Reich, Terry Riley, and Brian Eno are early examples. Another term that's closely related is procedural. Developing an algorithm or process that generates the composition. Modular synth is often considered generative music, especially when there's some random aspect of the process.
