@@TheBelrick Well a point for Aluminium is that it builds its own passive layer. So even if it is scratched or damaged it won't corrode away. In Addition to its lightness it combines the hardness of an artificially induced Elox-layer on top with a relatively soft base material which bends before it actually breaks. Like with a Sword like the katana you combine a hard top layer with a soft core to get a material that withstands all kinds of conditions. So you basically get a highly shock resistant, self passivating/ corrosion resistant, heat/cold resistant yet lightwaight material that is only surpassed by way more expensive (in both pure material price as well as processing cost) materials like titanium.

@@TheCyberloki Hulls flex. Aluminium upon flexing creates micro fissures around ANY rough hole or join. This is what brought down the first jetliners and why they stopped riveting aluminium. Also it is the primary destroyer of the USN LCS program Ships rated for 41 knots limited to 26 knots and in calm conditions only. Because of the hulls of the independence class The freedom class tried to solve this issue by using steel but dissimilar metals has its own serious issues killing that design too. Care must be take with aluminium hulls and for our size ships, fibre glass is just better IMHO

Beautiful yacht, tho i dont know why you went with sail drives, shaft drive is better especially since its a bluewater yacht?.. is it semi custom? Can i choose to add shaft drives if i make an order? Can i have hybrid propulsion? With a hydroregeneration system like an oceanvolt and more solar panels and electric engines. I'm contemplating wether to place an order but i would like for this yacht to be able to be self sufficient and off grid without having to even go into a marina.. i would also love to see something like this in the 40ft to 45ft range

Folks - 18 tons for a 52’ cat is pretty heavy. Go check the specs on an Outremer 51. And I’m sorry, but saying the boat can have more beam because it’s aluminum is not even wrong. This isn’t a review, it’s an advertisement, and the normal skepticism is required.

The helm system that will be installed on Explocat units #2 and following will be using a pendular steering station, that will allow to steer either in a low position, sheltered from the hard bimini covering the cockpit, or high up for maneuvering and sailing in good weather conditions. This will be very different to the helm system you see on this video, which was shooted aboard Explocat #1 and corresponds to her customer's choice. Plus the saloon steering station of course, available on all models and permitting to pilot the cat from inside!

The avoid the weather comments are nonsense. With good speed you can usually avoid the worst of the weather. Implying you can always avoid the weather is ridiculous, it almost always moves faster than you, you're reliant on good wind to avoid the weather and the path is unpredictable so even if you get good wind and do everything right, there's still a good chance you end up in it. That being said this looks to be one of the best built boats on the market for storms. No self-tacking jib and a solent rig mean it will do weather helm very well and the aluminium structure will be more resilient than most.

@ People said solar panels would never exceed 20% efficiency ever. They did. People said only 10 years ago that electric outboards would never take off. They are. Combustion engines in boats will be a thing of the past in 15 years. I already know several long distance cruising boats with electric engines and as battery and energy storage solutions continue to improve, it will only accelerate the inevitable change.

@@ChasingContours yes, quite right. In 2011, 40% of power generation in the UK was coal, it's now less than 2%, and will be nil in a few short years. Everything is changing. People are just not aware how fast it is changing. Electric engines on a sailboat are already viable. Imagine ten years from now? Battery storeage alone could be ten fold. That is not impossible.

@H. Kirk I worked at sea in my 20s, and I remember things that were not supposed to break, always did break in the middle of nowhere. Nothing broke at the dock. I also remember that foul weather gear made me sweat so much I might as well have been in regular clothes. Now, I fish offshore in my spare time. After five to six hours in the sun I need a break. The bimini is a help, but the reflection off the water still gets me. That is why I like a covered helm. I like as much protection as I can get. Go well.

By the looks of it that’s not designed to be a fast boat but a relatively comfortable and safe boat for its size. The width of those hulls would work on a 75’ to 80’ catamaran and add some carbon fibre daggerboards and then you’ll have a fast sailing boat right up there with Gunboat. LOL I’d rather sail a monohull than a slow catamaran ! At least the motion on a monohull is much gentler then the “washing machine” jerky motion of a cat. If not getting a considerable advantage in speed, then the few extra square feet of deck saloon is worthless and the monohull wins. (My monohull gets 10 to 12 knots in those conditions all the time, so no advantage there.) Garcia Exploration monohulls are top shelf if you want to sail high latitudes and into the arctic ! The only boats that would rival the Jimmy Cornell’s inspired Garcia Exploration sailboats would probably be Skip Novak’s ‘Pelagic’ 100% custom sailboats, but those were never produced for sale.
@saillaw2
@saillaw2 4 жыл бұрын
OnTheWay the “few extra square feet” is actually about a doubling of square feet - even more if you include the covered cockpit. I’ve grown tired of long trips heeled over, I find the motion of a cat in seas to be preferable over compatible monohulls, so am making the transition.

@hereintranzit
@hereintranzit 4 жыл бұрын
@Captain Hofuk, it all depends on what kind of sailing you do and where. If you like island hopping in the Caribbean with an occasional Atlantic crossing to go play in the Med’ and the Aegean, or island hoping around the archipelagos in the Pacific always staying in the warm waters of the tropical and subtropical seas, then a comfy large catamaran is what you want one hundred percent, but if you want to sail around Cape Horn or the Northern Passage and into the arctic, buddy, stick with monohuls like the Garcia Exploration, Alutab, Boreal, basically alloy monohulls designed for the savage conditions of the high latitudes ! I don’t think that you’ll want to be caught with a catamaran in a sea full of floating ice. Can you imagine having your cat straddling a huge chunk of floating ice wedged between the hulls ? And for the warm water cruising you don’t need an aluminium alloy boat to have to worry about galvanic corrosion of the entire hull structure. So, stick with GRP composite hulls for the warm waters and make sure that you’ve got enough zincs to protect your prop, prop shaft and rudder shafts from galvanic corrosion. The latest technologies and materials used in GRP and carbon fibre and kevlar reinforced composite hull construction greatly eliminated the problem with the classic delamination and osmosis blisters found in the older fiberglass hulls. (Don’t compare today’s GRP boats with a “Formosa” from the 60’s and 70’s!) With proper periodic maintenance the GRP composite hulls could last “forever” . There are plenty of advantages and disadvantages with every design and every material used in watercraft construction. You only need to know what fits the best with your particular needs. Anyway, if I could get a 60+ feet well designed catamaran that has a high enough bridgedeck so it won’t sound and feel like a bomb goes off every time the waves hit the underside for the same amount of money I get a comparable size monohull, then I’ll definitely go for the cat because I’m getting too old to put up with the heeling myself and I don’t care anymore for the cold high latitudes. The 68’ super fast carbon fibre cat I really like is north of 7 mill US $ and that’s grossly out of my budget.
@saillaw2
@saillaw2 4 жыл бұрын
OnTheWay I want my cake and be able to eat it too. :) I’ve primarily been a monohull sailor for the past 30 years, but am now looking for a retirement boat to sail the world. The limited ocean sailing I’ve done in cats (45-55ft) has left me with the impression that I am willing to tolerate the negatives of a cat in return for the positives. I would love to explore the extreme latitudes, but am willing to do that by ship. I doubt I will ever go outside the 60 to 60 range (except maybe to cross Cape Horn) in whatever boat I end up with. So being iced in is not likely to be a problem for me. Look at it another way, I expect the ocean crossings to be 5% or less of the time on the boat, the other 95% of the time will be living and exploring on the boat at locations around the world between the 60’s. The Cat is more attractive to me for those periods. Aluminum is attractive to me for other reasons (as are the water-tight bulkheads and crash boxes). Probably overkill for my needs, but I’m willing to deal with the added expense and maintenance of aluminum in return for that peace of mind.

Willem Haifetz-Chen “New Pelagic” is a 77ft monohull being built as a training exploration vessel. It’s not really in the same class (and probably cost 3 times the Garcia). Although it is certainly a cool boat.

Garcia made a mistake with the helm positions. If this leans towards an expedition boat, the helms need to be out of the weather like the Balance 526

This will be as you mention on coming units with pendular helm. The helm position you see here is on Explocat 52 #1 only - customers choice.

@@vorjay the angle to true wind / apparent is where my curiosity arose. I don't believe that depth of information was made evident from the contents of this video,which I watched in full. Perhaps any sales or marketing team will deliver that to the audience in the future....
