I watch this as I’m outside on my porch in Kansas City and there’s always a lot of them howling the next street over by the woods as they are right now. My pit got out ONE night (I do rescue and I know the importance on keeping your dogs secure) but I searched ALL night until I finally found him the next day, he was exhausted and pretty banged up w some wounds but you could clearly see he fought a group of coyotes that I’m sure approached him or he accidentally walked into one of their “traps” and he clearly put up one hell of a fight. It’s safe to say, he won and had so much blood running from his mouth that was NOT his. I know he was determined he was getting out of their alive and coming home to his family. It broke my heart but I’m glad he didn’t back down and he’s back where he belongs and been by my side every since. ❤️

Hello. Just a PSA here. Coyotes are urban wildlife. They have long lived among us in cities just like a number of birds, squirrels, etc. They will eat small dogs and cats. Sometimes they'll even lure large dogs back to their pack. That said, they are just living their life and surviving. Urbanites just need to be aware of who their neighbors are. I am always amazed at the people in my Nextdoor community who are surprised or afraid that they saw a coyote outside. Even worse are the people who feed them, habituating them to people. Just leave them alone, watch your pets and children.

@@kristinab1078 they’re great family pets, I have one and all 3 of my nephews live with me. She’s great with everyone and they’re great guard dogs/protectors. Any dog/animal can be unpredictable but I think the main issue was that the dogs who bit your family members were not theirs, they didn’t grow up around them so they weren’t used to them and they obviously hadn’t been trained or socialized, unless the people were doing something to make them act out like that. The only dog I would not suggest (especially around kids) are Pitbulls. I’ve had dogs my whole life, all different breeds, and Labradors are definitely great family dogs but they’re not the best at protecting/guarding. We’re talking about dealing with coyotes here lol but they’re very sweet dogs.

As a Floridian, banging something or shouting “HEY!” is usually enough. If it’s not, you need to be on high alert because that coyote wasn’t just curious. If it stays and is persistent you need to be very careful, and keep scaring it off. Get louder, even throw things near the coyote, and all else fails, protect yourself at whatever cost. The chance of being attacked as an adult is slim but child attacks are getting shockingly common. Make sure your kids are aware as well and keep an eye on em.

@@dorothythorpe6183 I don’t know that that’s true. Have you looked at the data? Again, it does always make the news. And unlike 15+yrs ago (most our lives) we didn’t have access to countless apps showing us algorithmic suggestions from across the country & world. Never before were hundreds of millions of people watching & seeing the same clips for things to go viral.. In the past you’d have only really heard of it if it happened locally, & if you religiously watched your local news & read the papers. This sort of stuff would rarely make the national news unless there was major carnage, which is very rare. More rarely, was there any footage. And if there was, that would be of the caliber enough to take up air time. Now you hear about & have footage of EVERYTHING. It warps the perception of reality. Meanwhile 3k people a year in US die from aspirin, 19k die taking a shower.. & we are all infinitely more likely to be maimed the next time we cross a street, get in a car… or interact with another human being- **especially a male human- as you are FAR more likely to be killed by that specific creature than ANY other on this earth. Going one further- look up coyote fatalities & how many people each year are killed accidentally or on purpose by a child… Just saying- the internet with all its knowledge does not foster healthy or accurate perspective.

I agree with you in general, but not when it comes to coyotes because they ARE actually overpopulated and occur in MUCH higher numbers today than before humans moved in; coyotes are an invasive species. Now, bobcats and Canada lynx and cougars and wolves, THOSE we need to worry about having pushed out and destroyed the habitat of. Coyotes, though, can and do live just about anywhere and are NOT suffering from urban development. They're actually considered urban adapters and are problematic. But again - yes, the human encroachment issue is a huge concern for many OTHER species.

The increase in the invasive eastern cottontail rabbit is a contributing factor in the increased coyote population (and coyotes are invasive nonnative species in many states, too). And the eastern gray squirrel, also nonnative across much of its range, is feeding the coyotes too. Feed the prey animals, and you're feeding the coyotes. Everything is connected!!

@@nicolcacola Not natural? Not natural for a predator who's habitat has been demolished to go after a small toddler for food? Seems like a pretty natural consequence to me. The Pheonix area has got to be one of the best examples of extreme over stretching of natural resources and severe impingement on an environment that is already sparse.

@@ladislaoortiz8420 I agree with you in general, but not when it comes to coyotes because they ARE actually overpopulated and occur in MUCH higher numbers today than before humans moved in; coyotes are an invasive species.

I mean… it’s not like the coyote is being an ***hole… that’s how they hunt in the wild- they take down easy prey. Let’s remember WE moved into THEIR neighborhoods… not the other way around. Mom was there, she handled it. She knows where she lives has animals. Stay informed on local wildlife- let’s not be so arrogant as humans to presume safety is a given when we keep building housing developments on wild land.

their habitat is turning into our neighborhoods because the pets and rodents are easier to hunt than deer. it's the path of least resistance, not their habitat 'disappearing' there is plenty of uninhabited land but there is less easy food attracting coyotes there.

@@lmt6672 I'm not implying anything like that, just mostly making an observation, although I do generally think we as humans take and take without giving much back. People still believe that these animals are shy and mostly harmless, except for maybe to your cats and small dogs. Just like people believe that bears are cool and cougars are cute. Then they do stupid shit, like feed them human food. Before it's all over with, kids won't be able to play outside and people won't be able to walk their dogs without having to worry about being attacked and dragged off as food.
