Easy answer to sum it all up.......All of the true Christians here, ask yourself this question...If Jesus were sitting in front of you having a conversation with you right now, would you use obscene language when speaking to him? That answers the question. There is your answer.
@GamingandFrightened

Trey Alexander Sure I would. Why not? They are just words. Words are just sounds we make until they are given meaning based on whatever society you live in. It's society who decides the meaning generally. And in true Jewish thought it's not the word that's important but the function or meaning behind it. (remember, the authors were jewish and in their thinking function was central to their mindset)So it isn't the word that's bad...it's the meaning behind it. If I say I F'ing hate that person. Then I've sinned. Not because I used the F word but because I had hate for my brother/sister. Wouldn't matter what words I used, it's the heart behind it.If I was to say I F'ing love this movie. That is not a sin. Because the function of the word has shifted. It's no longer seen as unwholesome. (or in the original text the word would be used to describe something that tears down another)These words we believe are wrong are only wrong because society picked a few words to say are worse than other words. What happens when society changes? Or if you are in another society that doesn't believe those words are offensive? Words also change with time. At one point scumbag was worse than the F-word now it's nothing by today's beliefs. Words themselves mean nothing...without the function or meaning behind them.That's what matters. That's what gives words power. The HEART of the meaning.I would welcome anyone to challenge these statements.

+Jeremy Jones I'm afraid the fact of the matter is that you live in a society where these words are generally used in a condescending manner, correct? I agree with the majority of your statements; however you have to consider others as opposed to yourself and your self imposed meanings of the word. Lets take Paul for example and what he says in Romans 14:13-23, 13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let uspursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats.21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.[a] 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin. Then in 1 Corinthians 8:13, Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. You see, if one of your brothers in Christ Jesus has been raised being told it is wrong to cuss and if they, I don't know, have been taught since a young age by their parents that it is wrong for them to do such things; For them, if they swear it is sin. None the less if you are swearing around them, and trying to convince them that it is okay...well...you are a stumbling block unto them; therefore you are sinning. If Paul was willing to go the rest of his life without eating meat because he understood it wasn't worth it in the slightest to potentially cause someone to fall into sin. You should consider the fact that you are in a society and culture where cuss word statements are generally negative (As far as i'm concerned) and you should come to terms with maybe sounding a fair bit more intelligent with using other words than the common four cuss words to express how much you love something. As well as all of that you should be considerate of your fellow brothers and sisters. Coming to a point that you'll be willing to never swear again if necessary...for there sake.
@GamingandFrightened

Josiah Tvrdik I totally agree with you I some ways. If you are around Christians who find cussing offensive, don't cuss. If you are around people who do cuss, then it's fine. Though I disagree with your statement on Paul not eating meat...remember, it's Paul that said he becomes like those who is around. When he is around jews under the old covenant, he became like them. Eating according to how they ate, etc.. when around the heathens he became like the heathens (at least up to the point where he is not offending God)
@TheGandalf1209
@TheGandalf1209 9 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Jones He would have been becoming like those around him in a way that was still honoring to God. Remember Ephesians 4:29, "Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouth..." I agree, he would become like them up until he is not offending God, but it is clearly stated in the bible that using cuss words or unwholesome talk is offensive to Him.

Gandalf1209 This is true...but Ephesians is not talking about words (which change depending on the context of the sentence) he's talking about the heart, the meaning behind what you are saying and cuss words change depending on the era and the context.

Any Christian who thinks cussing is appropriate and of God, or doesn't matter to God, I would say you should check to see if you're in the faith. If you're filled with the HOLY spirit and you're not convicted of that then maybe you in fact do not have the spirit. Ephesians 5:4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving." My comment - I am not trying to condone filthy language for the saved Christian. Scripture says that Isaiah is a true man of God, but he is also a man of unclean lips - Isaiah 6:5. Being a man of God with filthy language is not good and will incur God's chastisement, but that does not "prove" that the person was "never saved to begin with."

+wtom04 I agree. Filthy language or smoking cigarettes etc will not drag a person to hell. Immorality will. I own this subject . I've known Jesus all my life my grandparents started a church .I grown up I catholic school I was an alterboy I new who Jesus Christ was all my life. I grown popular at school at this time I was in public school. I mixed in with everyone.Using foul language the F word was before and after every sentence. I rocked. Drugs, sex,and rock and roll. And my life life was in the pits .Knowing their was going to be a wife and children that was going to depend on me .I was lost, high school dropout ,and no prospects . I fell on my knees and crying out to Jesus for help. That is when I was born again. At 21 years. When I got up off my knees the swearing was gone,I talked but it didn't come out. It was an effortless change. I consumed the bible for about 3 years. Finding the scriptures from out of a man heart the mouth speaks. You see God is about cleaning the heart. My twin daughters are 31 years old and never heard me swear all because of Jesus. And how the world becomes offended by that. Two commandment believe in Jesus Christ and love oneanouther as I have loved you. When your in him and he is in you. The commandments are easy his burdens are light. And if your worried about the wife and children. I'm in the 80% earner rang. Peace out

I guess that is the key; it’s not whether u cuss or not but the spirit behind you cussing (which is no different from the spirit behind anything you say, cussing or no cussing). If your vocabulary is small, your vocabulary is small, but often times, cussing is often associated with insulting someone, which is indeed unchristianly. But as far as insulting people goes, it is possible to insult someone without cussing; think mean girls, snobby upper class rich people, or those European aristocrats in movies. They do not utter a single cuss word but when they insult, their spirit is no different from a bitter person cussing at someone.

Growing up my Dad used to say “cursing usually displays one of two things, you are ignorant/uneducated and don’t have other words that can depict how you feel, or you are an overall lost, hurt, or chronically angry person. We shouldn’t aim to be either.” In short though biblically cursing usually comes down to heart condition. If you are saying those words all the time around everyone and it’s coming from a place of anger or discontent then you need to do some refinement. Cursing just to add humorous flair around close friends who know your heart is harmless.

While it nearly devastates me to hear the Name of the Almighty reduced to an expression of surprise or disgust, I also cringe a little bit when this passage is misused in condemning the misuse of God's Name. Thanks for your comment.

There are very rare occasions when coarse language or crude ideas are appropriate in order to make a powerful point. It should never be done as an out of control reaction, but as a very intentional attention-getter. You find Scripture writers doing it on rare occasions. God in the prophets sometimes has quite crude descriptions of his people playing the whore with foreign gods or nations. Paul wishes that false teachers would cut themselves off, probably referring to castration. He describes his supposed advantages prior to knowing Christ with a fairly crude word, which could legitimately be translated "shit." Piper is right in everything he said, but there are extremely rare times when a well-placed crudity can actually build people up by shocking them out of their complacency. If you cuss all the time, however, it will have no effect. It will only work if you are known to be a gracious speaker who does not cuss. Piper himself is an example of this. In a famous sermon clip, he calls the so-called prosperity gospel "crap." This is powerful because Piper is not known as a cusser, so we know how deeply he feels about this by the use of the (for him) crudity, and it gets our attention.

Unwholesome talk is wrong. Speak only what is good for building others up. I'm by no means a perfect Christian but I try to be the best I can be. For the better part of my life so far, I used profanity as a result for pretty much everything be it good, bad, or indifferent. In the recent year or so without seeing this video or researching the topic, I've felt a strong conviction to not use profanity or vulgarity at all... It was then when I wanted to stop that I realized it was almost habit forming in a sense. I have since cleaned up my language and I will say confidently that while I don't believe it is a damning sin (using damn in it's proper theological context) I have come to believe, on Christ's influence alone, that use of profanity and vulgarity is sinful. Instead of trying to rationalize it, you need to think about it: Do you personally believe Jesus Christ would use that language with you? We're all entitled to our own opinions but from the viewpoint of someone who pioneered this topic without pastoral guidance, here's something to read and think on.

SA SD You said you believe profanity and vulgarity are sins, but not damning sins. Matt. 12:36,37 “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.” That kinda sounds damning...? What about James 5:9? “Don’t grumble against each other (...Fuck you, Damn you, you’re full of shit, etc...) might be considered grumbling against someone...), or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!” ...is that a threat? Should we be worried? “Judged” how on the Day of Judgment? The first verse sounds a lot like condemning (damning) judgment. I’ve wondered about these verses, and even asked a leader in our church what they really mean. He said to me, “I don’t know.” What do you think? Should we be more concerned about profanity and vulgarity (“empty words”) since Jesus said that evil words come from the evil heart of evil people, and evil doers will be sent away from Jesus on Judgment Day? (Luke 6:45, Matthew 7:21-23)

He addressed that in his answer. There is a general (not universal) consensus in a society as to what is "off" or "crude" or "inappropriate." Christians should not want to cross that line. "Poo" is not currently considered very offensive in our society, but "shit" still is, although that is changing. In 50 years, Christians may be saying "shit" without crossing the line of cultural offensiveness. It is pretty silly, though, how we come up with alternatives: Darn it! What the frick! Judas Priest! Seriously?

Well, it probably has to do with how one of those is socially edgy for no reason. I suppose you'd have to ask yourself why you would stand your ground on something that is worth nothing. You gain nothing from using a word like sh*t. It's only used, in my experience, to maintain a persona that is not worth maintaining. It's a worthless habit, and only makes mothers cover their children's ears. The culture isn't something that determines what is wrong or right, but choosing what is intentionally edgier and acceptable in less circumstances is not helpful. If your words are pure, then your words will offend less people, so the question is, "why choose words that offend more people?". If you intend to have a witness for Christ, and are witnessing to a household that is secular, yet is offended by swearing, you offend them needlessly. If they are offended by the cross of Christ, this is expected, but offending anyone for a reason that is not righteousness' sake is unnecessary and unprofitable. All of that, and I would like to be the same man everywhere I am. I don't want to have to control my mouth only when children or certain people are around. I don't want to be two-faced, so I choose the face that aligns more with purity. I'm not trying to be condemning, but this is my answer to the ideology you described.

Jesus called the religious leaders, "sons of vipers"...sounds kinda like something else we say today, doesn't it? Vulgarity is alot deeper than a simple "four letter word" that got stereotyped as bad. Vulgarity is a heart attitude, not a syllable of sounds. You can curse someone and speak vulgarity without ever "cussing" in your life. For example, if you tell someone "You will never amount to anything"...that is cursing them. It's also far more vulgar than a word like "shit" could ever be. Also, the words "ass" & "hell" are used in the Bible, also considered by some to be profane curse words. Proves the point that words aren't inherently bad. It's how they are used & what is in the heart when spoken. If you say ass meaning a donkey or a butt, (example: I fell on my ass) you're not in sin. If you unjustly call someone an asshole on the other hand & hurt them, that isn't right. "Fat" & "ugly" can be considered vulgar too. You don't need "swear words" to hurt people. Also the same people who won't say "damn" or "shit" say "darn & shoot" alot. They mean the same thing & I don't believe any of those words are inherently evil. People make things bad that aren't really bad.

I just wanted to point out that whether you have been saved for years or just got saved yeserday, no one will ever be perfect while on this earth. Just because you get saved doesn't mean you are automatically perfect overnight. We don't all get convicted of the same things at once. We need to give each other grace and walk out our own faith as the Holy Spirit leads. Everybody's "walk" is different. We are not all the same with respect to what sins we struggle with the most. Some struggle more with sexual sins or drug and alcohol use or anger. The Spirit works on us over the course of our lives and we should be patient with ourselves and others in all our struggles.

I grew up with parents who hated words like "stupid", "crud", and "crap", as if those words were borne of Satan, and would punish me for using them, but let me watch war movies full of "f*cks" and "sh*ts" and "god damn its". How did my parents give those actors a free pass but bring down the gavel on me for using far weaker expletives? I never understood the double standard. To make matters worse, when I got older, I heard my own puritanical Grandmother say "crud" or "crap"-I can't remember which it was, but aren't they both at about the same level of offensiveness?-during a board game and that boggled the hell out of me. When I grew up to be an adult and wasn't a child anymore, I realized that those who are easily offended by words like "shit" or "hell", are actually in the wrong. It's their choice, and totally within their power, to be offended or to not be offended. And for them to act offended is a form of judgmental control over the speech of others. Now, "Jesus Christ" is another matter entirely, and I'll admit that, but the obsession with "foul language" on the part of evangelical Christians does far more harm than good. It's a form of ridiculous legalism that Jesus would absolutely condemn if he were still around today.

If I stub my toe and no one's around and I say "S***" instead of the socially acceptable "Shoot," I really don't see how that could be sinful. It seems like it's really situational and definitely more of a heart issue. If you say one of these words (except for the first few given examples) and can honestly check your heart and feel no guilt, I don't think it's wrong. But if it makes you feel wrong, or people around you think it's wrong, then it would be wrong for you to say it. Very interesting especially thinking for me personally the word “damn”. I wont lie i use it a lot, i see the problem in using it out of anger with expressions like “damn it”. My issue would be with other ways i use it, i never considered or have an intent in my heart that i was twisting important issues that God talks about. For instance if im playing golf with a friend and they hit an amazing shot i will say “damn” out of excitement and encouragement. I wouldnt have thought that this was a problem because the heart behind it is not of anger or to twist what God says, and there are multiple definitions to the word apart from damnation. It's not what goes into your mouth that defies you, it's what comes out of your mouth that defies you, for from it are the issues of life. From out of the heart, the mouth speaks. If the Lord is living in you, you will speak holy. You will speak the oracles of God... It's time to grow in the Lord and come out of the world and be separate. "One does not know man until one knows the power of words." Henry David Thoreau. Which is why wordplay is one of Merlin's most powerful magical tools. Words that uplift with the magic of their love are good (god). Examples of such words are trust, compassion, understanding, mercy and harmony. Words that are like heavy lead are evil because they suck the joy out of US with the heavy gravitational pull of thier darkness (ugliness). Sanction, starve, torture, murder, bomb, shut down, lay off and separate children from their parents to die ...are examples of words that are like heavy lead that suck the joy out of US with the darkness (ugliness) of their ignorance (absence of love/light). I have noticed that when hearts of humans beings call the egos of counting corpses "a** h***... it is generally true. words have meaning. it's only those outside of Christ who claim to not know things for certain...everything is irrelevant to them. but words do have meaning. otherwise why even communicate at all if words don't mean what they do? it's a world of confusion to claim you don't know which words are the bad ones? you know which one's they are. but because of the lack of virtue rather than not knowing...cursed words are said to children, to women, to old folks, to parents, to teachers, to the authorities....not because words have no meaning...but because the loss of respect and virtue is gone. and to those who do possess respect and virtue of self control. those are the people that are mocked and looked down upon. this is a result of not having the fear of the Lord. now have I cursed?? yes. have I taken God's name in vain as a Christian...yes. however, I know it as soon as it comes out. and I am ashamed. I confess to God my lack of self control in my choice of words to express frustration. My countenance falls when this happens. And it's true...those moments in my walk when I'm the most content in my walk with Christ is when I walk by the spirit and I honor God more in my life. but when my communion with God is not in the right place is when I find myself more short tempered. when I say taking God's name in vain...I don't mean the GOD da.., Or saying Jesus Christ! out of anger or frustration by God's grace He eliminated those words completely from my mouth when I came to Christ. But at times I have taken Hell is vain...and John Piper does make sense that Hell is a serious place...as serious as God is God and not to be taken lightly.

We must be very careful and mindful when dealing with the morally "Grey" areas of our faith. Meaning the things that the bible does not specifically address or talk about. Since these things are not talked about in the bible and therefor not condemned OR encouraged...how are we to proceed in handling these things??? The short and sweet answer is through prayer and submission to the holy spirit and what he is leading you to do. But I would argue the motion as to whether or not it glorifies Christ Jesus and the Gospel. Does it glorify God and his mission, does it honor God, does it bring credit to God, the gospel and the church? If the answer is a clear no or even an uncertain no than I would say that you are better off refraining from such conduct or activities. You know the good ol fashion sayin that says, "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should." is very applicable here in a general sense. You also might know the old saying that goes, "If you have to ask the question as to whether or not you should be doing it, then you probably shouldn't do it." is equally applicable. The bottom line is that the holy spirit does not work or move through a spirit of confusion and/or uncertainty, but always moves through a spirit of truth. If the particular issue causes confusion or uncertainty or fear in you then it most likely is not of the spirit. But at the end of the day you have to make that decision yourself again through diligent prayer and seeking of the holy spirit. God will never lead you astray and he will always lead you in the way of truth and love in accordance to his good and perfect word and spirit.

I don't often swear. It usually happens when I play football (soccer) every now and then when a shot goes wide. However I do use the word 'damn' as my main bad word. Any suggestions of a good substitute and not vulgar?

As someone who felt with cursing, don't try to find a substitute, changing a word does not change what comes from the heart. Just don't do it. It will be difficult, but with time, you will not curse. Remember, we have to stop it at the heart. God bless!

Yes I agree on this. We have to think would we say this things if Jesus or God was around present? Or if people argue that we can curse without meaning any anger put of it. Another question after this first one would be would Jesus do that (fill in the blank) ? Would Jesus curse and say f you or s**, or yeah you get the picture. He wouldn't therefore we shouldn't whether we use curse words just to emphasis on what we're saying, or to say it without any form of malice. The fact Jesus wouldn't we shouldn't. This two questions we need to always ponder on whenever we do something.

What you have to say to yourself is that by calling God by this name, does this glorify him on any way? You have to take into context what you’re trying to say. Kind of like swearing, it is bad to swear to God for anything in our lives. If you really love someone, do you think just by giving them a label makes them feel better?

To me swearing a lot says you don't fear God. I've seen some Tiktoks of Abraham Piper's (Pastor John's son) where he's using lots of F-bombs and I could never picture Pastor John talking like that. And what's the difference? Abraham Piper is an atheist who has no fear of God, he swears like that to illustrate to the world that he eschews our God and he doesn't care who knows it. And I was the same when I was an atheist, so just having that realization makes me work harder to watch my tongue.

What if the word correctly describes something? For example, what if something is of no value and provokes disgust? Would it not be fitting to call it "shit" or bullshit," since that is the definition of those words when used in a figurative sense? And what if you were to say "shit" instead of, say, "feces?" It seems like some swear words are simply just alternative words for things that have synonyms with the exact same meaning, yet we don't find it crass to use those words in a literal sense. For example of this, we think it polite to say "pee" or "urinate" as opposed to "piss," but in the Bible itself we see the use of "he that pisseth against the wall." That raises a question: if the word "shit" was as common as it is now to describe defecation 400 years ago, and the Bible had to mention something about defecation, would the Bible use the word "shit" or perhaps even "shitteth" in the same way? I ask this because while I have noticed my overall language becoming more polite since getting saved, it still seems legalistic to me to give people a hard time for occasionally using culturally impolite words in an informal context, especially when the person isn't the type to be addicted to cussing in every sentence as some folks are. I can see why for example we wouldn't want to replace the word "extremely" with the present tense form of sex, or the F word, as it makes no sense when you really think about it, but there are other instances where certain words DO make sense and in a personal, informal context nobody is going to be offended.

Jesus didn't say not to "cuss", he said not to swear. I am not defending my own habits since I don't "cuss". (Actually some people would consider some words I use like "crap" to be cuss words but where do we draw the line? I knew a lady that said never to say "Oh man!" but to say "Oh my stars!" instead as a euphemism! I think it(the Bible) is clear that christians should not use bad words or bad language, but what is bad depends on the situation, usage, and who you are talking to. I don't cuss because I was raised not to so it is just too awkward for me, but it is fine to cuss around people it won't offend if you don't find the words bad or dirty yourself and say them with no ill-will/insult and with a good unconflicted conscience. It probably isn't right to cuss around people that you know or suspect it will offend since we should be willing to offend people if necessary but if we can just use an exact synonym that won't cause trouble, why not? Shouldn't we also consider it wrong or potentially more wrong to pointlessly insult people by questioning their intelligence or creativity(which also insinuates that that being less intelligent is something to be ashamed of), how is that good christian behavior? How is that supposed to "build them up"? What about looking down on people that cuss? That is hypocrisy! It is wrong and in poor taste to willfully insult people no matter what words you are using. But many christians make a mistake by acting basically like PC police and actually insult or look down on people that use words that offend them for no other reason than that they were taught those words are bad and that people that use them are bad and stupid. What does it say about us if we are offended by little words that are not even meant with any ill will? The real problem is not that christians feel like they shouldn't cuss, it is not like they are missing out on anything, cussing appears to be mostly a disadvantageous habit and those not in the habit simply use different words and exclamations. The real problem(in addition to insulting others) is that christians will say that swearing is wrong when they swear all the time. Jesus said not to make swears, promises, etc, it wasn't about cussing. My interpretation is that he is basically saying "Don't give your word/honor as collateral(nor anything that is not in your power or right to give), just be honest and reliable without making promises, which are reckless and assume you know the future" I don't think that every christian that speaks against swearing is in the wrong(especially if they are not insulting or looking down on people that do), but I think at some point some "pharisaical" types have "made this teaching of no effect" by subtly deceiving people into thinking Jesus is fine with swearing/oaths but that they can not use certain words.

@@trevormoore3605 Yea but this is in response to the original comment. You haven't engaged with what he's said. You're just marking it as a defence of unwholesome talk. It's a great bible verse but you must understand it before you throw it around. This discussion is about how we understand that bible verse. What is unwholesome talk. Is it using the word sh*t instead of poop? If that's the case you'll need to justify that.

@@noahfletcher3019 Honestly, I originally commented Matt. 12:36-37 because it's one of the most convicting verses to me concerning my tongue, I did not mean to give my own commentary in response to Daniel Bowden's original comment - I thought what he said was thoughtful and I wanted to leave a very relevant piece of Scripture in response; nothing more, nothing less. But, if you wish to hear my thoughts on the matter, here they are: if I seek to do what is honorable in the sight of all men (Romans 12:18), not wish to cause anyone else to stumble (1 Corinthians 8:13), and recognize that if I know the right thing to do in my heart and fail to do it, then for me it is sin (James 4:17), then for me, I see no room for any curse words (or any word considered derogatory by the consensus of the general public [i.e. words that make a movie go from G to PG and so on]), as well as any word, phrase, or anecdote that I may use in order to tear someone down (Ephesians 4:29). For I know that I will give account for every careless word I speak (Matt. 12:36-37), so for me, I cannot with good conscience utter a curse word, lest I condemn myself. And yes, there are words that have righteous contexts (in which case if used in those contexts then I could proceed to use them in faith), but those are few and far between when talking about curse words, the majority of which I personally consider to have no righteous context. Just my thoughts :). I do not intend to get into an argument by any means, but I felt that you did truly want to hear what I had to say, so I figured I would type something up :). With that said, may peace be with you, for in His presence there is fullness of joy, at His right hand are pleasures forevermore! (Psalm 16:11) Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope! (Romans 15:13) :)
