This is my favorite song since I first heard it at my son's Catholic school when he was in kindergarten. He used to get so embarrassed because I always cry when we sing it at Mass. He is 40 years old now and I am at his bedside in ICU in Galveston and they are removing his life support. I played it for him now and I will play it again at the moment of his death. I was away from home in a different country when my Mom passed away and my parish Priest asked if i would want a mass for her where I was and this was the psalm for that mass, it was my mom's favorite psalm. couldn't stop crying the whole time

I went to Catholic school and was one of the "A-TEAM" altar boys who always was pulled from class to serve funerals next door at the church. My fellow servers and I would joke if the organist and soloist would sing this song. I served about 40 funerals in 5 years with this song being played so I became "numb" to its words and true meaning. Fast Forward 48 years and when my mom passed at 96 it was on her list of songs to be played at her funeral mass. When it was sung in our parish's new larger church it resonated with me and struck my heart in a deep way that I balled like a baby. I still cry when it is played at masses and cried even at the funeral of an older neighbor in August. Makes me realize God has them in the palm of his hand and we should all rejoice

A week after the funeral the eagle return but this time ok our side of the river in a tree just off my back porch. He is now gone. When I was in second grade like almost 40 years ago my teachers 4 year old son would often come and visit. He was so adorable that our whole class loved him. One day watching his older brothers hockey game he fell and hit his head and passed away. It was so stunning to us a in our catholic school. One of my good friends last year died from suicide. We never found out why. He was half a year from graduating senior year, an Eagle Scout, successful student and had an amazing girlfriend. When we heard the news, our entire school felt a surge in our hearts. My mother couldn't go to his rosary because she was afraid to make a scene by crying too much, honestly she wouldn't have been alone. We played this same song at his funeral and all of the Eagle Scouts in our troop (including me) carried his coffin into the hearse as it left for the cemetery. It is the 2nd year anniversary of my father's death today. This song was sung at his memorial and I listened to it a lot through the mourning. It is so beautiful. My dad was carried up to Heaven on Eagles Wings and is shining bright like the sun now, in God's Hands.

Eagles are very special birds. Like other birds of prey they can fly downward faster than a falling object. They build nests in an aerie at the highest points of their region when teaching the eglets to fly, if its too soon, the eagle catches their babe before it hits the ground. Pushing it out of the nest but always at the ready to save it from harm. This is a defining character trait of all eagles. How perfect. Gods eyesight is perfect, gods timing is precise, every time i fall god is still there. When i have to do something that feels impossible this song is where i take courage. Its no mistake our countrys bird is an eagle. It will always be okay no matter what comes next.

Joe Biden brought me back to this song. It’s about gaining hope in time of despair. Always loved it as an altar boy and I still do as a spiritual 35 year old man.

This has always been my favorite hymn, so I was floored to see him quote it (though it makes sense). I'm 36, first altar girl in my church. My very Conservative mother is who fought for me to receive the same "grace" as any boy by serving at the altar, and who showed me what it is to stand up for one's beliefs by bringing me to anti-abortion protests at the age of 8. Now, I bring my eldest daughter to pro-life/pro-choice (liberal) protests for women's rights. This song speaks to me. Hope speaks to me. God works in mysterious ways.... God bless.

That’s what the song means to you. To me it means flying around the world and seeing that God has risen me to be with him and see the world through the eyes that he wants me to see. Not the world that the people who want to bring me harm want me to see. To me it’s not about hope, but it’s about God saving me before I have to hope. It’s about him saving me before I have hope or despair.
