I had the opportunity to sit in a circle-style discussion with Ellsberg and Jane Fonda in the 70s at the University of Minnesota: I still have photographs of this moment in my photography portfolio. As a former journalist and advocate for investigative journalism, Ellsberg is a cut above most in terms of his heroic resilience. We owe him a lot! I am so grateful that Marianne did this podcast to shine the light on the injustice being done to Julian Assange. More Americans need to sit up and realize the truth!

Thank you for supporting Assange. As for Afghanistan, since 2001, the heroin production in the country increased 20fold, and the US is now getting 90 % of its heroin from Afghanistan. Who made this happen? Also, why did the US leave tonnes of weapons and hundreds of armed trucks and tanks to the Taliban when leaving?

Marianne, thank you so much for advocating for Julian Assange. I'm pleased to have learnt something more of Daniel Ellsberg here. Although the bad news has come in from the UK, listening to Ellsberg now gives me renewed hope that the president may come round and, were he to do so, I think there would be eternal kudos. I've always felt much respect for Joe Biden, and even while he shoulders the tremendous burdens of the presidency, **I think** that he does so with some grace and that he continues to be a positive force.

Same. Coincidentally spent a couple hours today finally doing some in depth research and was a bit horrified at the things he had done, e.g. releasing documents that had voters personal info, including a database/files in Turkey that had women voters' home addresses - and then attacking a Turkish woman who replied to the Twitter thread WikiLeaks made announcing the release and courteously stated her concern. I'm all for exposing corruption but Assange seems to not care at all for those that could be endangered when he releases info as-is, without 1. Censoring private citizen info or 2. Doing basic research to make sure the things he's provided are legitimate and aren't, say, planted maliciously by a foreign agent

@Conversations that Matter: Nancy Peden & Friends I want to say that this is not new. Historically, not even Vietnam was the beginning of this. From an online encyclopedia: ''Censorship was an indispensable war weapon: its task was to keep the people in an atmosphere of utter ignorance and unshaken confidence in the authorities, and to allow their boundless indoctrination so that they would, despite terrible losses and privations, accept the necessity of holding on until the bitter end and the complete “knock out” (David Lloyd George) of the enemy.'' Does the world really want to live in 'utter ignorance' and accept total trust in the government, the exact same way that, say, 17 year olds in world war one trusted their government when going to fight for freedom? Weren't opponents of world war 1 - who history has vindicated as the only right ones in that time of deranged delusions and ideological thought - actually completely silenced and so the tragic effects of that era of history are our fault? And that, by indicting Assange, we prove, that our civilization has learned nothing?

Was Assange's publishing the Clinton emails really "controversial"? Publishing the crimes of the political class whether or not to warn voters of the true intent of candidates should never be classified as "controversial", simply because it is not. Publishing truth, no matter the consequences to guilty parties cannot ethically be called "controversial".. Bending to such politically endorsed narratives is pusillanimous at best.

Years ago I talked to a Vietnamese man who was a soldier in the war. He was a villager. He said that the war began for him the day the Viet Kong killed his brother and cut his head off as a warning to the village not to support American soldiers. He admitted to having killed dozens of solders of the North, mostly young kids on their first assignments who didn't know how to fight, yet. One night, he said, he and his platoon got drunk and they undressed to their underwear. They then went into one of the tunnels in the dark. Using only a knife he killed one innocent kid after another. He was covered in mud and blood, he said, and they simply couldn't see him coming. The man now lives in the US, has a wife, children and grandchildren. All he wants is for them to be happy. He regrets what he did, but his war will not end until he dies. That is war for you. Forget about the numbers. They mean nothing.
