A unique capability that is able to operate on different terrains under all weather conditions, the Marines are a vital NATO asset. As amphibious troops and able to bridge the gap between the land and the sea, they are held at high readiness to deploy rapidly if a crisis strikes.
Many NATO countries have Marine capabilities and they often train and exercise together in different Allied countries to hone their skills and practise working alongside one another. In this short documentary, we look at the Dutch and German Marines in Scotland, the Portuguese Marines on the rivers of Lithuania, the UK Royal Marines training in Norway, and NATO’s largest Marine contributor, the US Marine Corps, which exercises across the European continent.

@@markmitchell457 haha.. yeah.. i guess thats right. I dont think germans have "marines" not under that name anyways.. and here ein finland we have "coastal jaegers" that have a similar work description. I served in the german navy before i relocated to finland and i have never seen a marine. But what we had is something similar to "seals" ..."combat-divers/swimmers" we use to call them. Those guys are legit nuts. Dont pick bar fights with them.. just a tip.

@@zoolkhan German Navy does not really have Marines as in amphibious warfare troops but more akin to naval infantry. The Seebattaillon (sea battalion) consists of one recon company, two onboard deployment companies (boarding, maritime interdiction, sea-based force protection, evacuation), one coastal company (land-based and naval base force protection, evacuation) and one mine-cleareance diver company. Add HQ, staff, training, logistics, medical for a total strength of 1100 personell. Seperate from the Seebattaillon are the navy special forces, which are the combat-divers. Seebattaillon is fairly new, it was formed in 2014.

Marine Components are the only things not standardized in NATO I think. Every nation has their own idea of what constitutes "naval infantry" "marines" or "amphibious forces". A British Marine is very very very different in terms of operational usage from American Marines, and the French have two "marine" forces, each administered by a different branch from either the Navy or the Army. The doctrines and even branching varies nation by nation even in NATO.

I think soldiers in the norwegian, swedish and finnish armies have a big boost to dealing with all weather. We operate in a country where one part it rains every day a lot, another where its - 40 C with wind. When you pee it freezes before touching ground. And we have alps, plateus, and rugged beaches. Norway is the ideal training ground for everything except desert terrain. Hence why we in norway train in jordan sometimes

@@johnseaton1967 While it is true that the Marines of other nations are considered special forces, there is a big difference between USMC Boot Camp and US Army Boot Camp. That difference is the level of indoctrination. USMC Infantry are shock troops, you send them in first knowing that despite taking heavy losses they will retain the will to fight. The US Army also has shock troops, in the form of US Army Paratroopers. US Army Rangers (Ranger school is no push over) are better than your average USMC grunt. In fact, US Navy SEALS, and members of MARSOC are often sent to US Army Ranger school.
