☝️Subscribe For FREE Photography Tutorials & Get My Top 4 Compositional Tips
In this week’s episode, we discuss the on-location tips that improved my landscape photography the most. We all spend a great deal of time working towards improving our landscape photography, but putting the tips and advice into practice when we're on-location is of the utmost importance. It's easy to forget to apply certain photographic techniques when you get in the moment and conditions begin to change quickly while on-location. I for one, find myself in countless situations where I get overly excited when conditions start to get really good and often end up rushing around and making mistakes that I normally wouldn't if I were to just slow down a bit.
In this on-location video, I take you along during a morning sunrise session during my recent trip to Acadia National Park. During this photo shoot I discuss the many different on-locations tips that had and continue to have the biggest impact on my landscape photography. I believe everyone has a different list of tips and advice that changed their photography the most and in this video I share with you my list of "must know" tips to improve your on-location landscape photography which will intern result in more images that you're excited about!
I hope you enjoy this week's video and are able to pick up at least one helpful tip that you can apply to your landscape photography workflow moving forward. Thanks for watching! - Mark D.

I think blue hour creates a more mysterious and calm mood while golden hour is the eye's orgasm of light..I would say that my eyes select golden hour for its light, but my brain the Blue hour for the colors and mood.. always depending on the terrain and the sky current synthesis..

This brought back a great memory for me - I was in Bangor ME on business, had a free morning on my last day there before flying out midday. I drove to Schoodic Point in the dark, had it to myself for the first rays of sun to hit the Continental US that day. I took pictures all over the slate rock out there as the light changed. Had a blast, then flew home. That's the trip I learned how critical it is to clean your sensor and take care with lens swapping in the field! I had swapped lenses a few times and that morning sea breeze blew crap all over my sensor. Thanks for sharing your morning with us.

Since your shooting with a smaller sensor you could use f9 or f8 instead of f11, the depth of field should be sufficient, the lens should be crisper and you could reduce the iso as well while keeping the shutter high enough to freeze those moving leaves. Really loving these on location videos mate, I'm looking forward to watching more of these.

This was so very informative, not least that you let your passion for your craft show. Though you emphasize composition often, light, and the quality of it was the overarching lesson in this clip. That and the necessity of chasing it, because it won't wait for you. Taking a series of photos is also a useful habit to get into, something I would have been loathe to do pre-digital-era.

What an amazing video you gifted us this week! To me, it was especially helpful when you talked about using manual focus. I've started doing exactly that in some of the photos I'm creating. Using peak lighting tremendously helps me see exactly where my focus is in the scene I have before my eyes. On a different note, I'm wondering whether you were in some remote trails or whether there were not many people in Acadia NP at this time of the year. I know it was early in the morning, but you made it seem like you had the park all to yourself. Were there not many visitors at Acadia at this time of the year?

Beautiful place and you captured it well. The emotions of when a scene is all coming together while trying to capture it all is quite exhilarating to me and seems to be with you as well. Sometimes I just like to enjoy a moment and not worry about getting a great photo too, but something about when all your planning and expections all come together, it's almost like a high. Great video. Acadia is added to my bucket list.

Loved the section by the sea. There is something about the movement, the light, the clouds, the sound and how they interact that just draws me. I've not tried bracketing yet but one thing that interests me is how do you keep track of the shots you do so that when post processing, you know which group belong together? Someone told me that they put their hand or finger in front of the lens on the left at the start and then on the right at the end of each set?

I remembered this video and just went back to it to help me in planning. We are going this year (Ocy 9th) about the same time this was filmed I think. This really made me feel better. I was concerned about a crushing amount of people (photographers/workshops as well), but when you were doing your sunrise shoot I only noticed one behind and one ahead. And when you were in what I assume was the Sieur De Monts area I never saw anybody. I know there were some, but it did not appear to be the crush of folks I've been worried about. You had some sweet light in there. I did wonder if you tried to get to Boulder Beach on your trip? Always enjoy your video's Mark - lots of great info.

Mark, great to see you in an on-location video, a little less script-based than your usual sit-in-front-of-the-camera videos. Your personality comes across more clearly, and I mean it in a good way. :) I have a question about using ISO500+ in landscape photos. Do you compensate for potential increase in noise at higher ISO values in post? Or do you think the noise increase is acceptable/negligible?

I've been told that you can maximize dynamic range on the Fuji sensors by using ISO 640. This was the first trip that I put this into practice, but I haven't noticed any additional noise in any images.

@@MarkDenneyPhoto Wow, I didn't know that! After your comment, I found this detailed description: www.jmpeltier.com/fujifilm-dynamic-range-settings/ -- on a quick read, it looks like the RAW file remains the same regardless of the D-range setting, and any adjustments are applied on top. I must definitely do some more reading on the subject!

No agenda is the best agenda! I totally agree. Those colors in the woods, wow, beautiful! The reds, greens, golds, the white of the tree trunks....ok I'm jealous...hahaha

As always great content. I loved the workshop last week but you are right in saying no agenda is the best. Next time I would love to spend an extra couple of days and trek on my own at my leisure. Perhaps next year.

Hi Mark: Yes, I agree ---another great video. Perhaps you can share with us what metering modes you use in the shots that you take. Are you using Matrix, Spot, etc.? Thanks for sharing all of your work. I know it doesn't make your field work easier, but we do enjoy it so much. You have a nice communicative style which engages the audience!

Mark, I love Acadia, so many great places to walk and explore. I was stationed there 4 yrs and came no where close to seeing it all. I will be heading back next year for sure.

I like the underwater features in your shot. Looks really great. Did the polarizer help with that?

Another really good video Mark. I really enjoy your on location videos and absolutely love the coast of Maine. While you are in Maine, if you have the time, you should check out Pemaquid Point Light. The rock formations there are amazing. Thanks for sharing.
