Most cameras allow you to shoot into the "extended" ISO range - Olympus has 2 stops on each side of their "native" ISO range - on the low side, it gives you an interpolated ISO100 and ISO64. But the tradeoff is that you lose a little dynamic range with you go into that area. Another thing that's fun to play with: if your camera has pixel shifting (on Olympus it's the "High Res Shot" function), you can get the blur in your water at a higher shutter speed than you think. Your camera is taking 8+ images at your default exposure then combining for a higher resolution image - the side benefit to this mode is that it will virtually eliminate any noise in the image and give you a longer exposure - think of 8 shots at 1/60th of a second, means that the combined image is 8/60th, or 1/8th second (and Olympus will give you a pin sharp image at that speed without batting an eye).

Oh you wouldn't believe it...a couple of days ago I went for a whole day out with my camera and my SD card became full 😮 and of course I didn't have another one in my bag! I couldn't believe it, as I take everything else with me but never have I thought to take a spare card. Lesson learned, but like you Henry, I used my phone and all was good again.

The expanded ISOs generally have degraded color data in the shot. You’d likely only notice in the most extreme scenarios. I’d try to avoid if I can and just do a quick exposure blend unless filters and a specific shutter speed are involved.

When Using the Lo ISO settings, you lose dynamic range as the sensor's signal is boosted (amplified) before the ADC. This only matters if you need the full dynamic range. You can get the same effect without the dynamic range loss by shooting Raw at Base ISO and then reducing exposure in Lightroom or similar software.
@timothysmallwood2367

I need to try it but I suspect that darkening the image in Lightroom will also effectively reduce the dynamic range. On the principle that “you don’t get owt for nowt”

Nice hike, Henry - thank you! I've used the the lower ISO-settings on my Z7 also in the same situation as you did (as an alternative ND-filter). For a Z7 Lo 0,3 = ISO 50 and Lo 1,0 = ISO 32. It worked well for me. However, you can't keep your feet dry with it, sorry.

That looked like exposure compensation. I use it from time to time for the same reason you used on this video. I discovered it by accident when I had dialed it down to -3.0 and it took a long time to troubleshoot why all my photos were dark. I don't think it works in manual mode IIRC.

Hi Henry, just book up for there for May for my 50th! I believe using any extended iso is generally bad for several reasons which is why it probably not mentioned much. It has too many disadvantages. I.e Overall loss of colour, data and dynamic range. Better to bracket all the best Marcelo

Talking of unknown camera features. I've just learned that mine has one, and so does the Z7, the Delay Mode. This works like the timer but you have less time options. Why use it then? Because it acts like a "mirror up lock" feature so cuts down on vibrations. There's probably a myriad of others. Regarding Lo-ISO, it is a good bail-out option but comes with the cost of lower dynamic range. At least you can choose what's more important to reduce the exposure.
