Notes: 1. 7:30 2. 8:35 stunning argument by perel. 3. 19:20 4. 20:50 5. 25:40 she again interrupts Harari with a beautiful analogy. She is a genius Its usually Harari who dominates conversations with his broad arguments and crystal clear articulation; but he is humbled by Perel here. Gonna read her books.
@paulkeogh9604

At 8:35min Perel beautifully and succinctly articulates the consequences of a failure to collectively hold the complexity of a situation, preventing ambivalence from splitting into opposing aspects or sides. She defines the opposite of polarity as complementarity. When complementarity breaks down you get polarisation. She goes on to say that a complex subject cannot be responded to with an ‘either/or’ solution, and that once polarisation occurs, each party defends their position by denying legitimacy to the other, which only serves to intensify the opposition and amplify the conflict. So, having prepared the ground for a genuine dialogue, I was surprised by Harari's line of argument especially his repeated insistence on distinguishing between approaches to resolving conflict at the interpersonal and the international scales; even "cringing" at Perel's light-hearted quip analogising post-conflict, peace talks as makeup sex. In the end, Harari presents his solutions to conflict, which re-articulated Perel's repeated calls to remain open to the complexity with comments like "by listen to their story, and taking it seriously, and talking about it, and offering them a different story, or offering them a different viewpoint on their own story, they can actually change their mind." Harari goes on to describe another avenue to "escape this network of power" that involves sharing "the experience itself". He says that although all experience is shaped by the prevailing power dynamics of a given context, "the experience itself" cannot be fully described within an analysis of the vectors of power. He correctly explains that you can understand the forces that deprive people of food, but understanding the experience of hunger is something else. Perel responds to Harari's manticulating (my word for when a man re-articulates without acknowledgement what a woman has already said) by saying "this, what you just described, is my definition of therapy." Bravo, Esther. Or should I say, touché.

Valuable input from both sides. I am glad the fear of penetration and feminine being seen as weakness were mentioned, by a male at that. These two things need maximum scrutiny and transformation: penetration has become associated only with aggression and overpowering and humiliation, while the fact that in most species primarily females take care of the offspring (which indicates nature would not relegate such an existential role to an inherently weak parent) has fallen out of sight, it seems. I wish Esther spoke more as her practical solutions are more valuable to me than a mere analysis...

I think most of the rationale behind the behaviour of states and/or societies within playing under polarity dynamics is the fact that globally, states (and those societies within) operate under an anarchical rationale... hence the need or "convenient need" for speaking to each other vanishes - as Esther puts it, any complementarity need disappears - and this apparently obvious conflict resolution mechanism is not taken automatically as an immediate alternative. Great conversation of two experts on their fields!

It's so important to practice discernment - not to cancel out opposing voices - to hear them with consideration for critical thinking. This man works for people who envision a world that doesn't allow that type of thought. So it's important to discuss the potential benefits of that world, as there are plenty, for a handful or fewer people in context. That counts. But so do the potential downfalls or cons - for everyone else. I stress the word "con" in cons.

We don't listen to others because we are busy listening to ourselves. When we are unsure we pretend to be sure, we wear the mask of certitude. Two people can talk only when they are equal or are made to talk by an external intervention. Polarisation, us versus them, is the easiest way to shore up power, at least temporarily. Polarisation collapses when the narrative fails.

For me polarisation is the consequence of jugement. Both side are right in some of their arguments. that is what is difficult. I dont agree on Yval Harari on his analyse on Russia and Ukraine war. This is a very leftist analyze of the moment. On the other end I agree that every war end because of inability to sustain it. We can say the same thing about everything. Harari and Perel are incapable of going to the very roots of polarity and more specific bipolarity. Unable to identify the roots on patriarchal materialist binary (1) (0), winners and losers, to go deep into asymmetric power... in economic, politics, social, environmental, etc, etc...Anyone that resist, rebel against the asymmetric polarity and have to face the repressive military-police arm of nation state which legally protect the interest of the ruling elites in "liberal western democracies" which Harari - Soros - Schwab call it "Open Society". It is incredible that the so call "experts" defends liberal democracy politically, but not economically, culturally, socially, scientifically technological, etc...according to them there is no alternative to the power of liberal democracies (the only and ever the best system for human relations and of taken care of our planet.

Why do people speak, what are they going to achieve? That is the primary question. Unlike the academics who get paid for words that do not move anything in the world there is another world where languages are used as tool and weapons. It does not matter if we agree. I want to win. Academics have rules, they have to stick to facts and logic but when I want something that belongs to you, I can talk behind your back, turn people against you, make false promises and threats and create stories where the crook is the hero and vice versa. And this is the real problem with communication. We think it is the words or understanding but it is not. It is the struggle for power. Why are the rightists and the leftists so polarized? Because they want hegemony. Who would come up with the words (or molecules) that would make them want cooperation instead?
