Hello Lars. That NATO BAG would make and excellent "still hunting" and of course a cold weather "sniper bag". Often when still hunting when I was in Service, I would put my feet in a waterproof bag to keep my bag clean and then button, but not zip the bag up around me to my armpits. I would then provide a support for my back or lean back on a tree and wait for the game,usually deer to come by. We called this "ambush hunting". We knew the deer traveling route in AM and PM, and therefore were able to bag a deer. Great video as always Lars.
@SurvivalRussia8 жыл бұрын
I think i replied earlier but now i can't see my reply?? Anyway here we go again, maybe. I love the sleeved bag and it's from 1984. Old school is the best school! Here we don't have deer. The only horned beast is moose and i hope to bag one soon. Would fit nicely in me and my friends freezers.

Great channel! Regarding the black MSS sleeping bag: These came in a few different forms. The older black bags were, as you noted, quite bulky and heavy. Sometime in the early or mid-2000s, the military improved the insulation in these, and the bag became much lighter and more compressible. If you are interested in trying out the improved bag, look for a gray-colored "Rapid Fielding Initiative (RFI)" model. The snaps will be in the same places.

+kabaruser Thank you Tom. As goes for forest/woodland this is a very tough area actually for a number of reasons. A few is, it's quite flat so orientation is difficult. You will never get a look over the canopy. It's swamped in many places even in summer and we have NO rocks or stones what so ever. Bugs and a lot of other reasons. It's actually an old "camp" area where people went not to return.

Nice video out in the zone that is between the "Zone of Death" and the "Zone of Certain Death", ha ha ha! Tough going in the wet, cold swamp; high ground is relative to the terrain of the AO you are in. ;-) I had the opportunity to use a borrowed one of the sleeved NATO bags, on a winter field exercise, during my service. I liked it a lot; it is a top bit of equipment! Oh man, that bannock looked "aaaaawwwesome"! "A little patience and an iron skillet" Best one liner, yet! Ha ha ha!
@SurvivalRussia8 жыл бұрын
+Gordon Miller Even during summer The certain death zone is a bit tricky but i know how to cross it. That also means i know not to get anywhere near it now :) Yeah that old bag is good and it's from 1984 :) Patience and a skillet goes a long way and i could hang my sleeping bag and stuff for ventilation while it was baking. A win-win situation :) Thank you very much for the comment my friend.

Yes, the old USMC K-bar is a good fighting knife, yet at 18mm it is too long for detail work and these do not hold up if used to continually split wood. It would be good to find something in the 13mm length that is tougher and has a pummel. A compromise is needed if one will only carry one knife. I would tend to carry a knife that is built for a specific purpose, and that means carrying several.
@Shooter11B8 жыл бұрын
That Bannock looked amazing Lars! Also, the 2 year old bacon was the perfect addition. It always makes me laugh seeing "expiration" dates on so much of our food here in the US. Based on these, what I call, fake dates, we throw away a stunning amount of food that is still good! People are such sheep. A total waste.
@marlinpoppyfield8 жыл бұрын
But he had real "dry" bacon. The bacon we sell in stores in USA is pumped full of water and does not store well. Find an old butcher who makes real bacon or make your own (it is easy).
@Shooter11B8 жыл бұрын

Lookin' good Lars... much like here in Alaska w/ early spring melt. I really liked you including the sleeping bag w/ arms. I have several most w/ the weather/wind resistant outer shell material and one exactly like you have that I use all the time. As a stand alone not quite warm enough even for summer ventures here, but as a component to kit - just great!!! Nice breakfast Bannock and bacon!!! I use my Silky saws all the time... mostly BigBoy and KatanaBoy with xl teeth --- most excellent!!! An impressive knife you will find exceptional is one I use routinely, and very well designed/made/materials for your kinds of conditions called the Terävä Skrama bush knife from Finland in Carbon steel 80CrV2. The bacon sizzling in the cast-iron has made me hungry... About 8pm Alaska time so I will grill up some Polish sausage tonight from last Fall's Moose River Float Hunt w/ Cataraft and Saiga-12 modified with HK G3 sights. I like your stock on Saiga-12... is it a folder also? Thanks again --- I always enjoy you channel.
@SurvivalRussia8 жыл бұрын
+Alaska Raft Connection - Alaska-BushRafter Thank you very much and thank you for the comment too :) I have the rubberized outer shell too, but in my "Stick in the Woods" video i was thinking about using the inner shell with the MSS bivvy and green bag. I was pretty cold that night :) I agree the sleeved bag is not that warm but it's not really made for cold climate. During my time in the Danish army it was standard issue. In Germany too. How did you modify you Saiga 12 with G3 sight/sights? I assume it is only the rear sight? Sounds very interesting! Yes my Saiga is a folder. I know about the Skrama and i might just try it out some day :) Again, thank you for your comment :)
@alaskaraftconnection-alask33978 жыл бұрын
+Survival Russia Yes - I most often use my sleeping bag w/ arms non-rubberized version. Occasionally the rubberized one can get light condensation in certain conditions, but nice to have in some situations. I have put one inside the other, however arms get constricted... and I also find the diminishing returns warmth-wise. Love these bags --- I find them highly functional!!! On my Saiga-12 I have cleanly aligned & welded the front G3 sight to top of the gas block. The rear diopter is welded to the dust-cover (I have a good fitting, tight cover). My average groups are palm of hand at 80 meters. My slug of choice is Brenneke Black-Magic 3" Magnum 1 3/8 oz load. Very consistently accurate and an effective Moose hunting set-up. Also nice to have this while dressing Moose out or packing as daylight fades in icy cold mud/silt/beaver dams/muskeg alone along a Salmon spawning river with a high density of Brown Bear tracking up the area splashing about nearby..

Is the ground just so wet out there that you can't start a forest fire? I notice that you don't really clear the ground at all when you make your fires in most cases. I can understand not worrying in the snow, but I'm hazarding a guess that because its swamp land out there, it won't catch if you leave it unattended.
@SurvivalRussia7 жыл бұрын
We have a lot of clay and sand in this specific area. The risk of a root/ground fire here is minimal. However, always take precautions according to the terrain. This forest is always kind of "swampy" :)

At 11:50 the cut wood has very different colors in the center vs the outer half. Is the wood really that wet that wet or is the discoloration due to something else? maybe it is just the camera?
@SurvivalRussia8 жыл бұрын
+Oregon Mike It's not wet any longer. It is from a pine which snapped during the fall storms. Then it froze during winter and dried out later. I think that was what caused the discoloration.

Demonstration of Russian 12 GA slugs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/q52ZamN_bqeUaLs Against the grizzly here in this part of Montana, weighing about 320 kilos, I would prefer the Remington 12 ga pure copper sobot round. This duplicates a modern 400grain .45-70 load at nearly 1,800fps. One must have lots of penetration or you'll simply piss it off. Second choice would be the heaviest hard lead slug I could find not designed to expand.
@SurvivalRussia8 жыл бұрын
+Jorn Jacobsen I see he uses the "Poleva" slugs. There are different types and they are supposed to shoot far. The Poleva slugs i have tried act strange out of the Saiga :) They are also much lighter than the Brenneke Bronze and Emerald i normally use. The Poleva's are basically sabot rounds. Out my Saiga they were not consistent but maybe a manufacturer issue.
@jornjacobsen39458 жыл бұрын
+Survival Russia I only shared the few videos that use comparable testing methods. All 5 of the Brenneke slugs of different names were similar in performance. They penetrated deeply. One example penetrated more than 17cm of pine. That may be good enough to break a shoulder. Good to know that you are using these. Out of a Saiga, you might get 2-3 shots in before the bear was on you. Unfortunately I need to test the brenneke in my new Remington 870. In my old 870 the Brenneke acted 'strange', but made a cool whizzing sound. I may have use the Federal Truball type. Good to have options. In this area, we have the highest concentration of Grizzily in the lower 48 states. A friend just installed an electric bear fence. They eat chickens and livestock.
