I did not search for this. I am a retired US Army colonel (but I started as a private so I am not completely ruined) and remember when the Army Chief of Staff Johnson eliminated all "swagger sticks" as being a vestigial remnant of European armies. We never had pacing sticks and have no idea how that would be viewed. In my career I saw the US Army practically leave all parades and ceremonies behind for combat exercises. The only parades, in my later years, were change of commands, and maybe, just maybe, some civilian VIP. Some US general once said of some other army, "Oh, yes. All generals and bands." I had no idea what he was talking about.

Being a smaller nation and army, we've needed to make sure every one of our fine service personnel are up to perfect standard - and then further improved. As a Veteran from Africa. We did not use pace sticks. We had to count in our heads. And we were very good at it. I spent hundreds of hours drilling. After a while it becomes automatic. Our Corporal used a stick, and a carrot on us. He wanted three things from us. A very good inspection. Stay out of trouble. And drill really well. And for this he would not gives us PT, or chase us around, and waste our time. He also would not let other NCO's mess with us. We still had a rough time, but he had our respect. If I may make some suggestions here! The jacket needs dry-cleaning. The belt looks too tight, and needs a-lining with the buttons. His tie needs to have the cross tie up against the top of the shirt button. His cap needs to be slightly leveled. The trouser lengths are too long, they are bunching up on the shoes. I am not sure as the angle of the camera changes things.. His shoes are need a slight buff, as they are carrying a dust film. We all carried a duster for this purpose. Thanks for the great video.

My Dad was the RSM for the 1st battalion of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Soldiers who served under him all said he was hard but fair (at least the ones that I talked to )

Apparently, the belt buckle doesn't have to be centered on the tunic buttons. Shoddy!

No one gives a fuck about his belt mate, question is can he operate a rifle correctly ????

I do hope this is being fully brought back into the Army. We need to maintain these traditions to avoid our soldiers getting lax. If we can’t have the biggest army, we can at least make sure they are the very best trained to take anyone on.

Lovely presentation, but is there any particular historical use of Pacing? Was it for marching and troop movements?
@davidsmart85945 жыл бұрын
@Jennifer D. Yes: They not only fix the length of the pace (36" from right heel to right heel, I believe), but are also used to measure out and plan a parade.
@stijnvandamme762 жыл бұрын
They will use the pace stick to map out the parade on a particular venu, first check how big the square is and where possible obstacles need to be negotiated on the way in or out. They can walk the entire place, and count the paces from one end to the other with the pace stick And then order the troops to march those exact paces, order em left or right, and they will arrive at the exact needed spot, without anybody on the outer edges running against a fence post or anything.. Because the thing was paced properly You could do the same by measuring things, but it would require loads of calculation to figure out where exactly everybody will end up after a serious of movements. the pace stick simplifies that , and you can just walk the routine with the pace stick, and you'll know exactly how many paces they must do in at each order/direction/movement. It's pretty ingenious really

Captain Chalky White Scots Guards, fantastic guy to work with in the Battalion. I believe he is now a Yeoman Warder ( Beefeater) at the Tower Of London.💂♂️🔵🔴🔵💂♂️

Tha smartest soldier I ever encountered was Capt. Paddy Cunningham, Irish Guards. He was my RSM when I was an apprentice at Harrogate, but commissioned captain in about 1973/74. He was brilliant with a pace stick. Our 5 x squadron sgt. majors also carried them on parade, but the designated sgt drill instructers only carried them during drill practice. My drill instructer used to shout "swing your arms or I'll stick my pace stick up your arse and run you around the square like a lollipop". Happy days.

Brats , all of the SSMs were Guards. Bradley Sqn - Scots. I don't remember which Sqn had the Irish.
@klackon17 жыл бұрын
Dave Wolfy: Your assertion that all SSM's at Harrogate were Brigade of Guards is, of course, completely and utterly wrong. Between 1971 - 1974 I believe all SSM's were R. Sigs. Certainly the two Penny Squadron SSM's who served during those years were. The first was SSM Abercrombie and the one who took over from him was known as Tasty Geezer. The SSM of Scott (I think) Squadron was also R. Sigs. He later joined W. Mids Police with a mate of mine.The only Guards warrant officers I remember were the aforementioned Paddy Cunningham and the porker from the Scots Guards who was posted in as the new RSM.

How’s it a “lost art” when literally all the British military do this.
@ilikelampshades65 жыл бұрын
I've not seen anyone ever walk with a pacing stick like that before
@michaelsorrell3235 жыл бұрын
There is no lost art of pace sticking - you either use one or you don’t. There is only one way of using it unless you use it solely as a weapon. That some are more artistic than others in its use is a given.

@@michaelsorrell323 "There is no lost art of pace sticking - you either use one or you don’t." What? No lost art due to the fact that people use it or they don't? What a profound argument.
