Royal Marine Band are ok but will never be in the same class of the Scottish army pipers. The marine band have the luxury of having the music in front of them whilst pipers have to knock their pan off on in learning every note and grace note off by heart probably ten times the work. As a Piper myself I could walk into a band in no time knowing I had the music right in front of my eyes. Not only is the pipes a much more difficult lesson to master but learning tunes is another thing. Different league altogether

Others, including overseas colleagues, have commented on the quality of the turnout and of the drill - which was, indeed, remarkable. The first march played, "Army of the Nile" was indeed written by F J Ricketts (pen name Kenneth Alford) who was also Director of Music, Royal Marines, and whose brother (composing as "Stanley") held the same post. I do not think, though, that mention has been made of that other Principal RM Director, Lt. Col Sir Francis Vivian Dunn KCVO, who cemented that smooth, lyrical sound into the band. FVD, the last of the pupils of Elgar, was reputed to have mastered every instrument in the band. They are fine musicians and Royal Marines - bless 'em!

@PhreshFunk i think all neil is saying is that influence has diminished drastically in the last half century. Currently it's sitting at a relatively similar level to say 2000. I was going to say 1997 but then remembered the handover of Hong Kong. Neil isn't wrong but i would hesitate to call you wrong too. :)

Imagine hearing the drums as the endless red lines kept charging up bunker hill, no matter what cost they just kept going. The fear of seeing such a huge and mighty force attacking you must’ve been unbelievable. Respect to everyone who has served in the RM and to anyone who has been on the receiving end of their fury, a well trained and purely special fighting force.

I learned euphonium and trumpet from a former member of the royal marines band service. Amazing man and teacher, talked about his time in the Falklands and ended up eventually getting a very lucrative job travelling the world training military bands a year or so after I went to university. Admittedly I was never any good and have only played in a few low level jazz bands since, but he inspired a love for this sort of music in me.

I was born into the British army. This is *my* music. Dad took us to concerts and tattoos. Every so often I have to get a 'fix' and sit with a lump in my throat, the hair on the back of my neck prickling and a sense of utter pride that despite now being an old woman, my blood runs A Pos Khaki. I left my army family when I was 25 but I am not, and will *never* be a civilian.
