Great work on the ACW figures. A tip for spears is to use some modelling putty (like Greenstuff) to make a bigger thumb to wrap over the top of the spear. It traps them in there and is pretty robust.

Figures look great! Always amazes me people think that there was any sort of consistency in uniforms 100+ years ago. Truth is more variation is probably more realistic than anything.

Well done, I got my 'battle in a box' set from a fellow wargamer. ACW uniforms Apparently a lot of the units on both 'sides' at the start of the ACW were 'volunteer' units made up from different 'contingents' making it both a 'nightmare' or 'pleasure' with different uniforms per company. As far as I am aware the grey uniform was issued to militia regiments before the ACW. I used different blue 'tones' on my 'epic' Union tunics and trousers to differentiate between units.

Thanks Dom and yes the green is very similar to the olive green used by Napoleon's artillery. They may even have been copying on purpose. For the button counters the 1864 field artillery manual, written by 3 famous union artillerymen (Hunt, French and Barry), states the paint mixture as 68 parts yellow ochre to 11 parts lampblack. BUT all my photos taken on trips to battlefields show that the shade of green showing on the displayed artillery pieces depends on when the park service last applied a fresh coat. Lesson - enjoy the research, but relax with the figures,models!

lol - true. I did think about it but i have quite a large 15mm ACW force so seemed daft to do that as well knowing i always planned to play 28mm at sometime

Don't worry about uniform colour shades! In a photo of my platoon way back in the late 1980's my combat jacket was significanlty lighter then everyone elses! It's colour wasn't wrong and I wasn't put on a charge by the RSM of Uniforms!

Ultimately you can paint things how you like. It's your game and time and you should do as you want with both and anyone who attacks you for how your paint your little toy soldiers can get bent. I guess it depends on how much history you want to involve in your game. Could you paint 95th Rifles with pink uniforms? Of course, and if that's what trips your trigger then by all means go for it. But it's going to drive other people insane. If you decide you want a more historical look for your Confederates, mix in some Union trousers and hats, but never jackets. They would wear captured uniforms constantly, but had to be ordered and then threatened into not wearing the jackets because doing so was causing friendly fire incidents.

yeah its degrees right - i would never go as far as pink 95th but i do know that uniforms fade and come in different colours despite what the regulations might say

@@BootsontheTable Absolutely. There is no exact shade of blue for union uniforms. Did they tend to be dark blue jackets with lighter blue trousers? Yes. But not always, and as you said, uniforms fade with wear and the troops were out in the weather almost constantly. Ultimately it's not that important.

ACW uniform colours varied hugely, as do most uniforms throughout history- due to dye quality, age, different manufacturers. They can't really be "wrong". Union guns and limbers were indeed green.

I would guess that at the time those uniforms were manufactured, there was no strict standard for colour. Dyes would have varied according to availability and would have faded in storage. Wear and tear and the weather would cause variation as well. Button counting if fine, but it should spoil the fun.

Great looking work Dom once that acw bug bites your in trouble I use the foundry acw triads can't go wrong they do a set if in stock about a £100 or you can just buy the ones you want over the years I have bought 3 of those battle in a box to supplement my forces

Ive been debating getting that acw battle box set for a while but i cant commit to it,never know when i could start on it or finish it?.As for the uniform shades i currently live in south carolina and the sun is pretty intense for most of the year,so i dont think it would take too long for badly dyed wool uniforms to bleach or fade,assuming they hadnt passed out from the heat!.

i think its the crossover of Napoleonic tactics into more modern ones, coupled with weapon development, plus the fact there arent vast variety of troops makes it interesting

The gun colour is fine, it was a olive green paint mix.( Lots of button counters in the ACW. Although I often find that pedantic button counters in most periods ,that try to trump people with a knowledge titbits, havnt really done any depth of research, theyve just latched on a couple of "facts" they like to spout). "Ragged Rebels" are a bit of a myth, whilst at times units on both sides were poorly supplied, and there is nothing wrong with the varied look, the Confederate units were often well uniformed until the end of the war. That Perry box set is a bargain. Great stuff keep them coming.

@@BootsontheTable Olive green, most of the artillery equipment on both sides was this colour. The 1863 Confederate paint recipe just copied the original US one. Think Olive Drab. There "maybe" a few "exceptions" but just keep with the green.

Olive green was a mix of yellow ochre and lamp black paints, so colour probably varied depending on who mixed it. 25:27

Fantastic output as always Dom. yeah spears on Celtic cav are a PIA. Metal spears and super glue gel helps. ACW flags can be quite similar. Although , flags of war has quite a few different ones👍

Fun fact the union did have a hard time dying their uniform darker shades of blue during the civil war due to bluegrass being from the south.
