It turned out we weren't alone ! Löwina's troop was also about - and the most dreaded thing had happened - who's going to save Flöffi's baby ? Kudos to Layla though - she stood up to try to save the day !

I'm glad Floffi snatched her baby back, and of course Bo never had had a baby fight back before. This baby was a bit older so it had enough energy to throw a tantrum when didn't get milk. Baby was like: "You wanted a baby? Here's what a baby does". I think having Layla, and Fozzi on her trail helped. Maybe the feeders helped too. Getting Bo on the ground allowed for the baby to freak out (she probably wouldn't have done it if they were high above ground), and it gave Floffi a chance to get the baby back mid-tantrum (which was distracting Bo). I'm not gonna lie...I liked seeing Bo's fear grimace. Serves her right!

Yes, it’s like the baby was calling Bo out as a fraud. I’ve noticed some mothers get almost embarrassed by the tantrums unless it’s during weaning season. Floffi’s baby was screaming to the entire troop “she can’t feed me, she’s not a real mother!”

I was thinking that myself. Bo usually gets them very young and weak. This one's older and the girl has got some spunk! Bo didn't seem to know what to do with a hungry, tantruming baby. Good!

I don’t think it’s the sterilization that is Bo’s main issue. There are dozens, if not hundreds of sterilized females in the Hong Kong macaques. They are not all stealing their sibling’s offspring and refusing to return them to their mothers. If that were the case then infanticide would be the norm not an outlier issue. It would also be a regular issue as soon as a mature female passed through menopause and I only know of one confirmed case of that. Dorothy in Bossy’s troop. It’s Lowina’s troop that is highly dysfunctional. The entire troop from Lowina on down would normally be working together to enforce the hierarchy and take those babies away from Bo. This is a dominance issue.

It's not true. The whole troop wouldn't work together to get the baby back. It's something humans wish for them but would never happen. In the kidnapping situations Flöffi have acted correctly in a macaques way because she doesn't want her baby to get hurt or killed. The kidnapper knows that and that's why they often take to the trees. I think Bo got confidence to be on ground level because no rescue action happened during the feeding. Also during the feeding was a lost attempt to get the baby back when the baby took to Bo's back. Anyone could have sneaked up and snatched her from Boo but no one did and that's also a sign of that a troop wouldn't work together to get a baby back from a kidnapper. Had the kidnapper been a monkey from another troop then perhaps and had the kidnapper been AM absolutely. He would have had to visit the ER. It was also the baby that helped her mum to get her back. Bo couldn't handle the baby suckling and the tantrum was another layer to it. 🤓🇸🇪

She was aggressively chewing on Bo's un used to suckling baby nipples which she wasn't happy about. Then the screaming tantrum to set Bo on edge and then Floffi finally getting the gumption to snatch her daughter back. Maybe Floffi has finally learned. Anyway I think Ferocity or Fiercely would be an appropriate name for her baby.

And if Lowina allowed Bo to babysit for her then Bo, as a child of an Alpha, would be used to deferring to mom's authority. Typically in the Alpha's family the youngest female of the Alpha females children is the highest ranking. And the rank progressively lowers to the youngest as the mom keeps having babies. Or if she no longer is capable of birthing babies the ranking, high to low, goes from the youngest female child to the oldest. So traditionally Bo would be the lowest ranking of all of Lowina's female children as she is the oldest female child (that I know of).

Babies don't usually nurse off of kidnappers they will just cry for their mom's. That is why Bo was upset when this baby tried to nurse off her then she never had to experience a baby throwing a tantrum. That set the right circomstance for Floffi to grab her baby back. Bo is more than just a wannabe mother looking for a child. These animals are smart and understand death. They grieve, they have compassion too. I think that Lowina's handing off the leadership of the troop to Fozzi has made Bo much more submissive since she knows she can't get away with holding on to the babies as often as she has in the past. This change in behavior has given Floffi more courage to stand up to her sister. What also surprises me is Layla being so young and having the cognizance to understand that Bo isn't supposed to be holding onto her baby cousin.

I think another factor that plays a part in this is that Lowina has gradually been giving Fozzi the reigns of leadership. Now that Fozzi is basically Matriarch, Bo is less inclined to fight back attempts at getting the baby back, and it has given Floffi the confidence to know that her baby won't be hurt if she tries to forcefully take her back.

Bo's grimace was a good sign she is respecting the hierarchy of Floffi. It does appear Bos beating by Lowina Fozzi and Floffi last year was in response to her killing those babies.

Bo will probably kill this one too. With this one how many has she killed now. And Lowinas troop is dying because, well the troop is small and there are too many breeding age females that have been spayed and now most of the breeding age females that are able and successfully birth... Bo kills them. If I'm remembering correctly Bo has killed all of both of her sisters babies except one? I think that Bo knows that having the baby isn't something that the baby's mom wants. She will take the baby into the trees to make it harder for the mom to get close enough to grab the baby back. It makes the grab riskier. She will also, keeping hold of the baby, approach the mom and groom her some. Then walk away with the kidnapped baby. Bo's kind of a bully and a d***. I get that Bo is desirous of a baby of her own. I get that Bo is high ranking within her mothers small troop. But are the other high ranking female(s) in the troop incapable of understanding that every baby Bo gets hold of DIES?

Congrats Floffi, u save ur baby. AM, it's really sad, one macaque from the car park troop is facing a situation similar to Bo's. She has kidnapped a lil boy baby. I spotted her last Friday and initially thought she had just given birth because the baby appeared reddy. However, I noticed another mother who had lost her baby sitting near that macaque. On Saturday, I noticed a peculiar behavior from a little baby that caught my attention. The baby was lying on the ground with a distracted gaze and flushed skin. To my shock, his mother had a tattoo?! This made me suspect that he was the kidnapped baby, and indeed, his real mother was present as well. Yesterday (Sunday), I bump into them again. The baby boy is still being held captive and appears even weaker than before. He seems depressed and experiences frequent tremors. He grabbed my finger and directed it towards his tiny mouth when the auntie was distracted by goodies. I discovered that the little one has teeth, so I gently placed two soaked soybeans in his mouth, but he was unable to chew them. We poured goat milk on the floor, hoping he could sip some. Unfortunately, his auntie rushed to grab him and ran away. The baby was only able to sip for 1-2 second. Afterward, I spotted them from the trees and witnessed the little one desperately searching for a milk source from his auntie. He had a depressed and hopeless gaze, which was heartbreaking to see. The little one even made faint cries for help, but they were not very loud. His biological mother would occasionally sit nearby to have a look on him, but she took no action to retrieve the baby. The auntie would constantly grab his hand or leg, making it impossible for me to successfully feed him goat milk in the end. It's truly, truly sad and heart-wrenching. I encountered this auntie last year when she already had the tattoo and a very frail baby. At the time, I didn't realize that she had kidnapped that baby. I simply wondered if there had been a failed sterilization, allowing her to give birth in such a weakened physical condition. It's truly a terribly sad story.

Praise the Lords (pick your choice)! I was almost in tears as Flöffi took her beautiful and Feisty little one back! Equally lovely was the fear face of Bo 😁 Hmm, didn't see Löwina anywhere!? Is she still alive and kicking!? I remember a scene filmed at Gibraltar where one of the Barbary macaques had kidnapped a baby, the mother and the family gathered in a grooming party instead of chasing the kidnapper (also the situation was high, high up on a construction) i.e. very dangerous. Anyways, the social out-casting the kidnapper felt, not being in that social group, made her come back over to the group and give the baby back to the mother!
